See, I love fishing in Terraria, I find it really relaxing in the right conditions - and I like to take my playthroughs slowly. I start fishing quests early on, just knocking one out every day as part of my routine, and the 30 days fly by while I'm playing the world as normal. I think it's much more of a pain if you try to do all the quests at once and waste a bunch of time sleeping. It takes a while to build up the gear because pacing-wise I think you're expected to just do them here and there. If you do that, it's no time sink at all, and you naturally build up a ton of fishing potions even before you hit 30 quests. I'd rather that than grind for potion materials lmao

@kellamyoshikage2869 ай бұрын
No one farms monarch butterflies, though, at best you're farming butterflies in general and getting much better butterflies to work with at the same time. The most practical simple bait farm is worms in the rain anyways. Obviously remix is best for this, but even in normal worlds you can get very high spawn rates by using a line of dirt as a spawn platform with an artificial jungle. Sure, it requires you to wait for the weather to line up for farming, but getting upwards of 100 bait in a couple minutes is fantastic, generally enough to go through a bunch of fishing quests and get to the point where you can just use master bait instead. If you have fallen stars to spare for enchanted nightcrawlers, then you're good right there, though generally I find stars more annoying to get.

Do you think you'd be able to beat the game without killing any enemies (0x spawn rate)by starting with 50 wooden crates, 25 iron crates, amd 10 golden crates? You'd get a restock of the hard mode variants upon entering hardmode with proportionate amounts.

@nt45dev9 ай бұрын
@@nebulous9280 Obviously have to make an exception for pillars. I was thinking more along the lines of no enemy drops could be used other than bosses. It would mean no post-plantera dungeon, a limited amount of golem tries (could be in journey so duplicating could be allowed for boss summons only to keep it fair). Basically you roll the starting crates when you spawn in and try to beat wof with what you get. Same thing for hardmode up to moon lord. All crafting would be allowed and shimmer can be used to get materials back.
@kellamyoshikage2869 ай бұрын
You don't need the crates at all, though starting crates would let you skip a lot of earlygame mining. Earlygame would be trivial as you could explore anywhere without any worry about enemies killing you, and a surprising amount of enemies and critters are still available through other means. You can fish by breaking jungle plants for buggies, and statues let you farm lenses, feathers, shark fins, rotten chunks, gel, stingers, rotten chunks, compass, and depth meter. In hardmode, you can get souls of light and night by breaking graves to spawn ghosts, or just by fishing. You can immediately raid the dungeon and then shadow chests due to the chance of getting golden keys from any pot in front of dungeon walls. Besides the obvious pillars lock making this impossible, there are some other stumbling points. Tinkerer, angler, tavernkeep, and any other NPC that spawns as an enemy is completely unavailable, as is pirate due to the inability to complete invasions. If a natural goblin or pirate invasion starts, no more NPCs can spawn for the rest of the playthrough. Bone is no longer renewable, requiring decrafts of dungeon furniture and pianos or natural mechanical skull drops from ghosts. Golem is now limited as well. Still, though, it should be pretty simple to get through Cultist, especially if you use a large world for more resources.

Fishing quests are unironically one of my favourite parts about terraria. Something about slowly getting together the best possible gear for a certain skill throughout the game is really appealing to me.
@orcsmoocher32079 ай бұрын
My strat for fishing quests was to always place a piggy bank or safe at every fishing pond I frequented. When a quest spawned in that pond, I'd pop fishing power buffs and store at least 3 or 4 extra of each quest fish by placing it in the pig bank every time I caught one. (Normally, you can only catch one at a time; but as soon as it's in a container or otherwise not on your person it will allow you to catch another.) As quests eventually start repeating as you're heading to the 30-quest mark, you'll end up with a good nest egg of extra quest fish long before you get all of your gear and you can cut out all the time spent traveling to each location. Haven't played in a while though. Don't know if they patched that.

This arrives at a pretty similar conclusion that you'll see with a lot of mechanics in all sorts of games, and just situations in general: The question of going for the maximum theoretical *chance* no matter how hard it is to reach, or going for the best possible *rate* by making much more consistent / faster attempts at a moderate chance per-attempt. It comes up in everything from running dungeons in ARPGs (do I go for max difficulty in return for max reward but with max grind, or just crush several runs of the highest difficulty I can clear quickly in the same time?) to actual IRL logistics: There's also some overlap with the 'last mile' optimization problem.

I think the fishing quests are more worth it. I believe the way Re-Logics wants us to do the quests is just here and there when we can, from the start of the playthrough to the end. That's the way I do it at least. At the start of a day, I visit the Angler and knock out a quest. I always get 3 Quest Fish per quest so the next time the same fish pops up, I can hand it in instantly, which saves a lot of time. I also nearly never sleep, spending the rest of the day building, exploring, farming or fighting a boss or two. I think this is more efficient in terms of time as compared to sleeping 30 days in a row to do the quests. Through this method, I will have the max fishing loadout before hardmode, and so can get the hardmode ores quite quickly through fishing right after killing the wall. Plus, maxing out your fishing loadout in pre-hardmode also means you waste less time, since you don't have to travel to the Hallow biome for the hardmode quests. And you don't have to worry about biome spread while fishing for the quests either. The best thing doing the quests this way does for you is never having to get bait or potions. I fully subsist on the fishing/crate/sonar potions & bait the Angler gives me or that I get from the crates I fish up whilst completing a quest. I also get so many building materials, potion ingredients and ores from this. So that's another time save.
@underscorn9 ай бұрын
Fishing quests aren't really meant for you to make them your entire priority, you're supposed to just quickly do the day's quest and then move on with whatever else. Obviously if you are actively trying to fish for something, you should just be fishing for it instead of trying to power up with quests, because like I said, quests aren't meant to actively be sought. If you neglected quests up until you actually needed to fish, I think it could be argued that's on you.

Personally I play extremely slowly and get all the things, so by the time I enter hardmode I’ve done more than 100 fishing quests in each of my three playthroughs so far. By that time I have not only the golden fishing rod and angler set, but also the lavaproof tackle bag, angler tackle bag, and angler earring (the fishing power bonuses stack), a glowing fishing bobber, an inner tube, and plenty of potions. I’ve never yet bothered with tipsy, chum buckets, or toilets. The gummy worm is obviously total luck. Beyond the fishing-related items and shellphone ingredients, I do the quests to get the golden bug net, sponges, and bottomless buckets for their utility, and so far I’ve also been handed the fin wings early into hardmode each time, which is a very nice bonus since all other early-hardmode wings require souls of flight and a hardmode anvil.

Some might consider this cheating but I always like to just get a piggy bank full of quest fish and return them all during the same day by renaming the character over and over. All the gear, baits and some potions in a couple days
@Altiami9 ай бұрын
I did the math once, and all fishing rarities level out at a 1/6 chance at an exceedingly high fishing power of a bit under 1080. Not even luck can bypass this limit. This is why the crate chances seem to become even; it's because they actually are becoming even! Additionally, I can confirm that adding the fishing gear was not the cause of less golden crates. Greater fishing power will make the average probability of a rarity steadily increase (though it does so in steps due to rounding in the math), never decrease, unless it's making way for a greater rarity. Golden crates occupy the top 2 rarities, so the average chance for a golden crate will NEVER decrease as fishing power increases. This means that your fishing power was either hindered by outside conditions (weather, moon phase, etc.), you got unlucky--literally--by the luck mechanic, or you got unlucky--statistically--by simply not passing the RNG rolls according to the theoretical average.
@humongofrog9 ай бұрын
My go to strategy for fishing has been to do fishing for most of the day, but to do the quests when the time and/or weather is bad for fishing, since you get a lot less biome/gold crates during this time, but you can still get the quest fish easily, even with low fishing power. This way you can still get the benefit of doing quests without really sacrificing how many crates you get in a day.

Here’s a potentially better method to get good bait without angler/prior fishing. 1. Make a flat surface of jungle grass to get plenty of grubbies, sluggies and some buggies. 2. Makr grubbies and sluggies into buggy statues at a graveyard. 3. Shimmer the statues to get all those back as 40% bait power buggies.

Some information that I think is relevant to this video... Things like classes and not taking items from one world to the other are rules the community invented, not saying they are bad. What I do with the fishing quests is once I have a quest and the area setup, I put a chest next to where I fish, and everytime I get the quest fish, i put it in the chest so I can catch more, and fish til I get like 3~5 of them, so for future quests involving that fish, I can just grab one from the chest and turn it in immediately

Just so you know last I checked torch luck only applies in the underground and below, not the surface. Also the reason the angler earring, tackle bag and lava-proof tackle bag stack is because they each just add a flat value to your fishing power instead of having a unique identifier for the bonus in the code like some other accessories do. Unless you were asking simply asking why they chose to design it like that.

I have many thoughts. 1. Optimize your fishing throughput by standing (or sitting on a toilet that is placed) on platforms that are just below the surface of the water, and casting straight down. This will minimize the amount of time the bobber takes to travel when you cast and reel in. 2. Torch luck doesn't apply when the player is in the surface layer or above (in my current world, the exact line is somewhere between -3 and -4 feet on the depth meter; IDK if that's consistent). The wiki is kind of bad on this because its phrasing implies that the position of the torch is what matters, when in fact it's the position of the player. 3. If you want to avoid biome crates, you could fish in a biome that doesn't have its own crate, like Forest or regular Underground/Caverns (ideally the latter because then you could use bone torches for torch luck). You would still get the same total number of crates, although it's not obvious whether you would get more or less hardmode ore. It might depend on your fishing power, and the three tiers of ore might have different answers. 4. In Calamity, you can get the golden rod immediately at the start of the game by feeding the Angler to a crocodile >:D
@kellamyoshikage2869 ай бұрын
Biome crates do have higher priority than golden crates, yeah. Once you hit 211 fishing power, biome crate rates cap out, while golden crates could theoretically get more common up to 643 fishing power. You can avoid biome crates entirely by fishing in areas that don't have them, like pure caverns for the added benefit of farming endurance potions. Doing this nominally should give you just 1/3rd more golden crates, but in my experience it feels like I get a lot more. This is most relevant for fishing for life crystals, for which max fishing gear and accessories is around twice as fast as max no angler, which saves around 4 hours total if going from 100 to 400. Other people say that grind takes a lot longer, which would make fishing gear save a lot more time in that scenario. Titanium Crates average 0.6 bars titanium per crate, while biome crates average 0.4, making gold crates 1.5x faster (same rates for adamantite/mythril/orichalcum). This brings up an interesting alternative: lava fishing, where all crates are biome crates. In return, only 1/6 crates actually come up at all. Lava fishing is always more bait efficient, but generally slower; once you reach 151 fishing power, water gets the same number of biome crates as lava while also getting golden crate chances. Below around 85 fishing power, though, lava fishing becomes faster for getting hardmode ores than water fishing does. If you're using magma snails and lavaproof fishing hook, lava fishing wins out up to around 110 fishing power, which is pretty substantial.
@LugborG9 ай бұрын
I think your estimate regarding the angler gear only really applies to the first time you fish for crates. Once you have it, you can just switch to it whenever you decide you need something. That makes the fishing quests a lot more worth it, because while it takes longer for the first set, the time it saves overall is much greater than the time it takes to do the quests. Plus, if your luck is anything like mine, the extra crates will be worth it.

It might just be me, but it *constantly* breaks and annoys the hell out of me whenever it does, especially multiple times in a row.

I'm still suspecting the winner would be, "make two fish ponds with actuated blocks that can make it any biome or combination of biomes, above or below cave level" thus making a perfect quest fishing system, that you then turn in to an angler who's at that spot anyway, and then you go back to fishing, in the same pond, on a better setting.

I did a lot of shimmering stuff with shimmering, provides lots of potion ingredients as much as you can fish out crates It is indeed a slow start, but underrated and has high payout later on, if you are commited in fishing. Preferably Oasis Fishing.

The thing that the Angler really gives you is a reason to visit different biomes. Helps new players understand traversal and backtracking as well as routing and environment building. Ok ok and the fuzzy carrot is cool as well.

Bear in mind that you have a higher chance of getting golden crates if you fish in the forest or underground, where no biome crate is possible. This is because, as you mentioned, biome crates do indeed take precedence over golden in case both rolls succeed (they were a right pain to find before).

Angler quests are mandatory if you plan on making a shellphone, which i usually tend to craft each playthrough. I wish i didn't have to, and there was an alternative way to get those accessories

Biome crates can be pretty handy, since sometimes you either cant look for chests or you really dont want to.

Funny that Grian had his fishing arc, now Wand of Sparkling also had their fishing arc.

i did a run in calamity some time ago, where i could only use things i fished up, that included crafting materials, i got to providance, after which you stop getting better loot, but there with no luck factors included, i could easily enough get to around 600 FP, and my max of all time was 658 power during acid rain in the morning of a full moon day

I basically have everything I needed with my gear with the fishing quests. I just do fishing for those potion ingredients, at least the Surface Hallow Biome is pretty generous with the fish as it only has a few to randomize, hybrid underground biomes are worse at giving you the specific ingredient.

I feel like whether or not it's worth it really depends on how much fishing you intend to do, and how willing you are to get a steady supply of potions. If you're just going for a few drops from fishing, it's probably best to just go for the potions/decent gear route, while if you're going to be fishing a lot for whatever reason, the quest route is probably better in the long run. Particularly since while you kind of glossed over it a bit, you were taking less time with full angler gear to get the same amount of crates, so if you're fishing for an extended period of time, the gap in the crate amount would only grow larger. Based on your data you listed, you'd get almost 100 more crates per hour with full quest completion, compared to just the decent gear and no quests, which is a pretty sizeable difference. Again though, it really depends on how much time you'll actually be fishing, vs how much time you'd spend on either route of gearing up.

If you're going for golden crates specifically you can fish in the forest biome, there's no biome crates that way

torch luck only takes effect on the surface if you're holding the item in your hand, otherwise it does nothing. also, you can use the fishing power boost with an inner tube or flamingo mount if you also use a flipper potion and a toilet just far enough into the water for you to be able to actually get catches while the toilet and "floating" boost still apply edit: ah, he mentions the flipper and inner tube + toilet thing near the end. nevermind then

I think it's funny to think about if someone just watched your videos without the text to explain what's going on they would just assume you LOVE fishing in games based on how much playtime you have doing it through all of your challenge runs.
@o-manthehuman78679 ай бұрын
This is good, but i think a better comparison might be from hardmode, timed by length to get titanium armor-- one run where fishing in the ocean is the only thing you do, and one run where the fishing in the ocean is supplemented by daily angler quests. Obviously this would be *much* more time consuming, but I think it would be a lot more informative than this test (especially if repeated). I do think it would be possible to calculate the probabilities to figure out an exact number, though, but that might also be very time consuming :p

The coral torch needs to be underwater itself in order to provide its luck bonus, if I recall correctly - not that it would have any great influence either way.

Woah... The average amount of crates you got from the best rod and bait-attempt is practically exactly what I have stored in my chest thus far (75 wooden, 25 iron and 8 golden)... goes to show it fits well as an average around 100 fishing power
@Sound_Tech4 ай бұрын
I haven't gone to max power before, but I do typically grind up all the potions and accessories, including both tackle bags. I usually play with friends and become the designated fisherman, so grinding for 3-4 players solo, I might as well take the time.

The most realistic scenario for an obsessive fisher is actually to make progress on quests while fishing, saving up 4 of each special fish type along the way to finish quests faster. I do wonder though how much money and how many copies of each unique item you could expect to get by the time you finish 30 quests
@schmingbeefin44739 ай бұрын
I deserve being nerd reacted for this, but torches do NOT give luck on the surface, unless they are held in your hand. So that coral torch was actually doing... absolutely nothing for you. Wiki states this, and for further measure I tested this myself with the wizard. I only got a luck increase message when holding the torch, despite having many placed right next to me.

this is just a hunch, but biome crates and gold/titanium crates might share the same spot in the loot table, with some math under the hood to randomize whether the crate in question is generic gold or biome specific. More simply put, getting more gold than biome or vice versa might be all down to (arbitrary, not the stat a player can control) luck, but the game treats both as equal weight. Even if my assumption is wrong, if the issue is NOT wanting biome crates, simply fish in biomes that have none, like forest/plains. If i am right, all those biome crates become gold since the extra step to decide whether or not to turn the gold crate into a biome crate is skipped, and if not, you are already reducing the pool of potential crates to increase the rates of all 3 generics, including gold.
