Great review. I just purchased an R5 and am learning its infinite ways of using it. My next investment is going to be this lens (RF 100-500L). Great review, thank you for keeping it simple and to the point.

Great information for someone wanting to know if this lens has enough reach for small birds. Thanks for posting.

Also, the 100-500mm on an R7 is a dream. The pixel density of the APS-C R7 sensor is equivalent to an 80 megapixel FF sensor. Just awesome!

That's awesome, I would have gone with an R7 if I didn't need full frame for my business. That crop reach is surely fantastic with this lens!

@@BeOkayPhotography You can pick up an R7 for around $1000 now new. Very very worth it. I have both the R7 and R5. I have the 100-500 glued to the R7 most of the time as I find the IQ to be fantastic and very similar to the R5. Video on the R7 is also very similar. Be on the lookout for something like Ebay/Paypal 24 month interest free deals if financing is an issue. If you got that, you'd only pay like $42 or so a month with no interest. I've been doing that for 6 years now.

For me, this is the best lens I’ve owned. It’s light, weather proofed, and sharp. The min. focus distance allow for some amazing macro-ish shots. At 100mm, you can shoot good landscapes too. Wide open and sharp at 7.1 does sometimes bring in some high iso or noise that is so easily resolved these days with software. It ridiculously versatile and a great wildlife hiking lens! I don’t want to carry TC, tripods , or even monopods most of the time. Personally just I don’t want to carry anymore weight. I shoot the R5 today am very curious to see what crop modes Canon will give us in the R5 ii or even R7 ii. I’d like more reach “ in camera”!

I got it for birding for the most part, but you are so right about the macro-ish shots. I've taken some recent butterfly/wildflower photos that I absolutely love. The minimum focus is less than half of my of my previous lens. Very versatile indeed!

I’m anxious to see how well that lens pairs with my EOS R. The lens is supposed to be here tomorrow. My RF 70-200mm f/2.8 L serves well as my birding/wildlife/landscape lens, but I need(?) more reach! Enjoyed your video. 👍🏻👍🏻

Oh awesome! Going from 200 to 500 is going to be life changing for you for wildlife!! Congrats 🎉 Let us know how it goes!

@@BeOkayPhotography Thank you, and I will. I can’t find any videos about how an EOS R pairs with the RF 100-500mm. So I aim to make one. 😎

@@TC_Connerthat's a great point. I only used the sigma on my R before I switched bodies. Well, two sigmas as I had the much maligned 120-400 for a bit before the 150-600C I'll sub and def watch when you put it out!

I know this is a canon lens but for a cheep wildlife zoom ...I much prefer the Sony 200-600/5.6-6.3.

I think a lot of this discussion has to do with how "in the face" you prefer your bird shots. I hear so many folks say that the 100-500 on the R7 is plenty of reach..... but then they show their examples, and the birds are not pulled up close enough for my taste. Nothing wrong with a more "environmental shot" here or there > after I have gotten plenty of up close, and personal, highly detailed shots of the bird. I primarily shoot with the 800 F11 on my R7's, and this is enough reach "a lot more of the time". But even so, I find myself a bit farther than I'd prefer, more often than I do, too close. It's funny to hear folks talk about a 1280mm equivalent like, "WoW" ! After more than 200K shots with this combo, it feels pretty 'normal' to me :) But as for the title of your video, "Maybe.... If your shooting large wildlife, and / or you can get within a reasonable distance of it".
@BeOkayPhotography6 ай бұрын
For sure, subject matters. I've gotten some very close small bird photos recently with the lens as well. Wildlife is situational by nature so some days you have what is required, and some days you don't. I went ahead and got the 1.4x TC for the eclipse recently so I am now capable of 700mm which has been a very nice improvement. In most situations I encounter, that is plenty of reach for me! But 800+ is fantastic!

While everything you said it true, I would like to point out that with that combination, which I own and use regularly, anyone who frequently goes outside to shoot little birds like that, can get much better environmental photographs. The ground is typically not one of the places to get good shots (mostly). I’ve gotten this bird in trees, on large rocks, at the water’s edge, etc. Once you develop your “bird craft”, you will find that it is not hard to get up on birds and get extremely nice shots.

This was just a sample he used to show the bokeh in both the foreground and background and to show the image quality heavily cropped. This image worked well for that purpose.

I agree. I get the same results. And with 100 to 500 range it’s greatfor large birds and animals. If the only thing you shoot is small birds than the RF 200 800 would be better for you

So I wasn't going to upgrade my wildlife lens, then black Friday came, and I got the 100-500 refurbed for the same price as the 200-800 which hadn't been released yet. I shoot any kind of birds too, including small ones 🙂
