I think FDev picked the Cobra family for their 4th new ship this year, because it's release (early acces) coïncides with Elite's 10y anniversary. A Cobra has always been the iconic ship of the game series. o7 peace

Best ship they released so far. Its a beast when engineered and built properly. FAS hull, mamba speed, dolphin jump range. Good weapon alignment. Good heat management. Best handling ship in the game.

Of all the new ships this is the one with a new cockpit and it is a very good one, that's extra points for me, cockpit is where we spend most of the time. I prefer this one for exobio.

Nice video but respectfully CMDR, I disagree that this ship is a release for the sake of it. The other small ships I used most were the Imperial Courier (lightning fast Odyssey taxi) and the Dolphin (terrific jump and heat management). Frankly the Mk5 looks like it's combined the best of both (600m+ boost and i can charge FSD while scooping without overheating). Plus it's got native SCO support so it's hands down better in supercruise than any legacy ship. Small ships by definition do not exactly excel in trade or combat ... maybe you could elaborate on what you mean when you say you can think of a handful of existing ships in the game that are better?

You make some good points. But I can't think of anything this ship can do that Mandalay can't do better. DBX, imo, is better imo. BTW I only meant this ship is not worth it buying in early access.

I've got similar specs to that. Cobra mk 5 has replaced the Krait mk 2 I was using for engineering material harvesting and the DBX for Odyssey settlement missions.

I only ever play the game for sightseeing in small ships, nearly always in a mk3, and I always wish I could have added the mk4 to my collection, so this will be very welcome. I don't play enough to justify spending real money though. Thanks for the review.

This is the first early-access ship I have paid for and I don't regret it. The agility is insane and the SCO performance - even the supercruise performance in general - is exceptional. My new go-to mission runner ship, replacing my Cobra 3 completely. I'm currently fitting it with a variety of weaponry to see if it can be made into a decent combat ship, but I fear the power plant size will limit it there

I built a Titan Bomber for the sheer hilarity. Was it good? No, but it was possible. The heat was under 20% with HP retracted. You had to shut off a few things in Titan space to have enough power. I built it without a shield because i couldn't get a shielded one to run under 20. Boost speed is 556m/s. Jump range is 35.96 (37.71 max). P/Y/R 61.04/162.79/44.77. Integrity of 2,695.9 Armor rating of 40 and Resistances of +20.8/+32.0/+44.2%. 1 engineered caustic, 2 pre-engineered heat sinks, and a pulse neutralizer. 4 guardian gauss cannon and one nanite torpedo launcher. Armored powerplant g5 thermal spread, thrusters g5 clean/thermal spread, power distro g5 charge enhanced/super conduits, g5 long range sensors, then class 5 hull reinforcement, class 4 hull x2, class 3 hull all g5 heavy duty/deep plate, 1 class 4 module reinforcement, 3A repair limpet, class 3 cargo, docking comp, and 1A AFMU. It was crazy fun vent bombing but quite lackluster on core damage. Now that the war is over, i need to rework it into something more versatile but it proved it could. Oh, it's name? Why, J Jameson of course.

It was definitely timed for the anniversary (s). I’ve bought one because I want to support the game. But I’ve been doing so many things that I needed a medium large for recently I still haven’t had a chance to use it. I think I’ll use it for odyssey on foot

I feel the MkV is a capable fighter. Mine is not optimal but I deliver decently good results. It's also the fastest ship in my fleet and still does just shy of everything I need. Overall I think it's a great addition.

Running BiWeave shields in the 5 allows me to take a slap and recharge quickly. This doesn't work as well if you're used to fighting in a larger vessel because it ends up being more strafing than dogfighting. But I'm also looking at a long range pulse turret in the top to allow me to strike from beyond gun range while I recover. With my setup I also almost break 600 in boost speed so when shields get low it's time to distance for a bit. Lots of strategic cat and mouse and even larger ships will fall.

I didn't EA the Python MK II because I didn't like the look. I didn't EA the Type 8 because I wasn't impressed by the hardpoint layout and I didn't EA the Mandalay because I explore 'diving bell' style from my FC and I'm not too keen on its looks either. When I saw the Cobra MK V, that's when I decided to put real money down. It's replaced my engineered Sidewinder as my diving bell / bubble taxi. If there was a way to repair powerplants in the field then I'd consider leaving the FC behind once I return to exploration.

Its the best small ship. Handles great and the black paint with ship kit parts makes it look like a F117 lol. I use it as a fighter and it performs really well. Of course it struggles with large targets but it is really fun to fly. Id say its an 8/10 for its category. I really wish they would have made it a medium like they originally hinted at. Would have made it way more useful.

I'm sorry to say, this fella doesn't k ow what he is talking about. The Cobra 5 is a great small ship. It's OP for its size. It's fast, agile and very tanky if built right. You can get almost 5k hull on this thing. Not to mention the best SCO in the game.

I don't care what anyone says, the Cobra Mk V is one hellova small ship. I get about 53ly jumps out of it, and that's rigged to do combat too whenever I feel like it. This is my new go to ship, and I didn't regret dropping ARX credits whatsoever to get it early. It's fast it's maneuverable it has lots of hardpoints and gets good jump distance, what's not to like?

Imo its not fair to compare a multi purpose ship to anything with a specified role such as the mandalay that was clearly made for exploretion and the python mk2 was made for combat and the price difference alone should justify the difference. but i can sure see it being a perfect ship for the new players, but the capabilities of it are not worth the money either when you are a seasoned player like myself with access to the best specs the game has to offer.. Buuut im sure getting it when it fully releases because the damn thing looks incredible!

I bought two early access ships: the Mandalay, and this. While the Mandalay is a no-brainer for exploration, this ship seems pretty awesome for what it does. I personally think it looks really great, none of the other small ships do anything for me but this is the only small ship that does. I have all the end-game ships and I'm switching from the Phantom to the Mk V for bubble bus and material gathering. It's much faster, more maneuverable and longer range than my Phantom, the only thing it loses out on is combat ability, which my Phantom was more comfortable at, and cargo capacity. But if I want to get somewhere FAST, this is it. Also, if I look at it from a noob's point of view, at 1.4 million CR this ship is an absolute bargain. The Mandalay costs more than 10x as much. As a new player I would spend my entire early game in this ship and then keep it forever. Is it worth buying? I would say that's a personal choice, if it scratches these two itches for you: 1) you think it looks awesome and 2) you want to financially support FDev.

Now: if ur ship get impounded u must pay maybe 10M to get ur real money shipo out. Problem, new commers dont have 10M to pay a bounty and also this happoens to me as a normal bug, when my ship is not used for that bounty or involved in Bounty. My ship was not even there. im a vetrean. i survive. First they paid for this ship for Jumpstart: BE WARNED: NEW COMMERS: 1 NEVER pay a bounty on foot! NEVER. 2 Always go to the bounty and let them kill u. then u dont pay 10 M lol, now this is only if ur ship is not full of cargo or Impounded... 3 Sux, however take is my only safe option (however not safe in many other ways) a taxi cuz the game has bugs that acually confuse a bounty to ur character vs ur ship and even if a ship may was never invovled in a bounty or fight. u get an big impound on a ship cashed with real money. In the bug` the ship can be recalled. however if u try to enter it on the planet when it recalls to u (when its impounded in a bug). :error server ADDER? AND LOG OUT. PAY THE 10 MILL BOUNTY. if u are a new commer u cant buy it out. And to not waste my day: i can never trust a mission on foot with my ship.. so its a taxi with no sco boost (takes time), vs trust to discard ship mechanics bugs. . No more on foot missions are safe with discard ship right now. i did play for 10 years. i DID NOTHING WRONG: and it happens often now after all the new updates, very often!

i dont lke it at all. ASP EX kills it. its suppose to be a multiship, its not, i try change parts, and its simpley lose vs ASP EX as a multiship , my ASP Ex build is 60 M , then better have a mandalay that does the other things for you. actually what can kill a ASP EX with a correct build and a good pilot. its the slots. Han Solo wins millenium falcon cant do nothing perfect, however it can do it all
