Careful with those speakers, they don't look like they're magnetically shielded. Definitely try taping them in place to see if they interfere with the screen before you go fixing them in permanently. I must say I'm a little jealous about how shiny and new that logic board looks after its recap. Mine is very tarnished in comparison, and the ports and metal bracket thing has a fair amount of surface rust which didn't come off in its vinegar bath before I recapped the board. Anyway, can't wait to see what's next for the un-cursed Mac!

The capacitor plague didn't actually start until the very late 90s. You won't find many machines from before that time that use radial or axial style capacitors with issues, with the one exception being machines which used the newer SMD style capacitors like most Apple machines from 1990 and onward. That was caused by a different issue, the rubber plugs in the bottom of the then new SMD capacitors used to seal them would dry rot and shrink, allowing the electrolyte to leak out. This is different from the later capacitor plague where an incomplete electrolyte formula from Nichicon was stolen and mass manufactured by the Taiwanese and Chinese under various counterfeit brands, sometimes even counterfeiting the original company. These capacitors would fail from the electrolyte breaking down and creating hydrogen gas that eventually ruptured the safety seal, or blew the rubber plug out the bottom. This is why when you find leaking SMD caps from the 90s, it's almost always from the rubber plug on the bottom and not swelling up and venting like later capacitor plague caps. The only time I've seen the older SMD caps blow up is if they're powered up after they start failing and kept in continuous use.
@Nukle0n4 жыл бұрын
For the those Mac mobos, the theory is that the problem isn't the formulation, but the fact that they switched to surface-mount capacitors instead of thru-hole capacitors. That meant that instead of someone installing and soldering the capacitors by hand, they would be fitted to the board with solder paste and then heated in an oven which would melt the solder in the solder past and form solid conections. Problem is that these early surface mount electrolytic caps did not like the trip through the oven, and the heat essentially aged them prematurely. This is why the SE's motherboards typically still work fine, as it has the thru-hole caps, but the SE/30 with its surface mounted caps and those have all leaked.

Yes, completely with you on the spray-on plastic dyes. On a previous ‘Cursed Mac’ thread, it was mentioned/recommended by another contributor and I managed to do a spot of research and posted a couple of links. The links showed the results of spraying a set top box white (from dark grey), and hi-fi/PC speakers black. The dyes actually seep into the plastic. That’s great because that resolves the problems of primer and/or the paint just scraping off the first time it touches anything. I’m looking forward to getting my hands on this stuff (it’s expensive: £10 for 440ml can), and trailing it. Pretty sure it’s the way forward for old plastics.

The so called Capacitor Plague is from early 2000. The SE, and SE/30 are way older than that. The older an electrolytic capacitor is, the more likely it will leak plague or not. Also SMD electrolytic capacitor, especially early one like on the SE, SE/30 are badly sealed and they are most likely to leak in an even worse way than the normal through-hole one.

Hey man, just recently found your channel. Love the weird stuff, it's infinitely more interesting than restoring these Macs to factory. If you're open to constructive criticism; I would suggest editing out the non-speech mouth sounds, which your mic is good enough to pick up pretty strongly. That's obviously fairly time consuming (I used to edit videos and podcasts, so I know firsthand), but it'll go a long way to increasing the production value, more than might be expected from such a seemingly-small difference. Also; re-cutting the intro to fit in time with the music could also be a small change that would have a bigger effect than you might expect. Right now it seems to be a sped-up single take, and every time I'm expecting the text to appear in sync with the lead instrument's few notes near the end. Also, being sped-up makes the shutting down at the end almost too brief to appreciate. My suggestion would be: keep the sped-up boot screen. (Consider adding an era-appropriate "bong"/"ding" sound at the very start.) Jump-cut each word into appearing, in time with the first notes of the lead instrument's, rather than showing the sped-up typing. Then, finally, allow the shutdown action at the end to play out in real time. You may need more or less of the intro track as a result. I would also suggest fading-in a little reverb when you start moving to do the shut down, and ultimately fade-out the entire track for maybe 0.1s or 0.2s after the screen goes black. Of course, feel under no obligation to follow any of these suggestions! But as a fellow (well, ex-) creator, it can be amazing what a difference such small changes, made in an afternoon, can end up making to the overall tightness and presentation of the video. Of course, it's totally up to you whether to follow my advice! Anyway, thanks again for the weird Macs!
@kaitlyn__L4 жыл бұрын
(Oh yeah, when I said "in an afternoon", I just meant re-cutting the intro - a bit of unintended ambiguity there.)

Hey Kaitlyn, thanks so much for this in-depth advice! I really appreciate it, because I'm really trying to make each video a little better than the last. Editing out (and trying to prevent) weird sounds has definitely been a huge struggle. Really interesting advice about the intro - that was literally the first thing I ever edited together! I've been meaning to redo it, especially since I'm editing in 4K now and that clip is 1080p :)

@ActionRetro4 жыл бұрын
Oh, one question I've been meaning to ask someone with more experience - do you think I'd get a better result with a shotgun mic, or using only a lav mic? I did try a Rode Wireless Go for a while, but I couldn't get it to sound right. Granted, I barely know what I'm doing. Right now I'm using a Stellar X2 Large Diaphragm Cardioid Condenser which I like the sound from, but I wind up with creepy breathing noises and such and it's tough to position on a mic stand to talk while I'm working on things. Thanks again for your suggestions!
@kaitlyn__L4 жыл бұрын
@@ActionRetro I'm fond of cardioids like you're using right now, but as you say, positioning can be a bit annoying. People often choose to move away from the mic to breathe with them, which can result in having to redo sentences now and then. You'd probably get 80-90% of the sound from a lav mic, though it'd be harder to record computer noises. But I don't think they outright eliminate mouth/breath sounds, more just change them. Less lip noises, more chest breathing sounds. My recommendation would be to not get new gear, and to just practice leaving a little more of a gap between your sentences so it's easier to cut out half a second or so of noises. So long as you're satisfied with the cardioid placement most times, at least. If you want the freedom to move around a lot more freely, then you may indeed want to consider a lav for voice, and use the cardioid on computer sounds. But a shotgun is just going to exacerbate your placement issues, as it has an even smaller sensitivity cone than a cardioid. A noise gate might also be helpful, where it cuts off all sounds below a certain volume. That can usually be done in software in whatever program you're using to record audio. That can eliminate the quieter strange noises, at least, and background noises from in the distance. Also I would consider possibly moving the mic slightly further away from your mouth? All cardioids are slightly different in this, but if you're, say, 6 inches away from it, you might want to try being a foot away from it instead. You lose some of the proximity bass effect (radio voice), but depending on the mic it can also be less prone to picking up strange noises. But these are more generic-type advice, I haven't used your particular mic personally. But yes, I think your best tool would probably be altering your approach a bit, moving to the side to breathe and between sentences and so on, rather than getting new gear. Doing so would almost automatically bake in a slight extra delay which you can snip out of the audio track (and maybe jump-cut the video to match). Thanks for asking, by the way!
