The simplest answer is probably because the F-15EX can carrier AIM-174B ultra long range (based om SM6 SAM) air to air missile and in large numbers. While also being able to network with stealth fighters around it or ahead of it making it an effective missile truck that can hold its own with its own flight capability and new AESA long range air to air radar.
@sparkzbarca
@sparkzbarca Ай бұрын
There's a few more keys too. 1. The f15ex can aerial refuel other aircraft. This is important with the new ultra long range of Chinese A2A missiles. You can have a F22 for example go a hundred miles back, fill up from an f15 then that f15 go back and gas from an aerial tanker to then return and fill the next F22. 2. The f15 has 3 times the expected airframe hours at 20,000 compared to the 8,000 of the f35. That's reliable too as the airframe is so mature we can actually believe the number. it also is 30,000 an hour for flying vs 35,000 for f35 so a 15% savings there and that's NOT accounting for the fact you'd have to buy three of them to do the same total hours in f35. This cost and durability is vital for two things. Homeland defense (AKA intercepting Russian bombers etc flying into Alaska and NATO airspace patrols. And for the national guard who have lower budgets but still need to get airframes and flight hours in. Using f35 to intercept a plane entering restricted airspace during the super bowl or checking out a Russian aircraft flying close to Norway is frankly overkill and we could use an economical response. 3. NATO partnerships. The F15 is a plane we could feel comfortable letting lots of allies share in the development and export sales of which ensures that allies that just can't justify the cost and complexity of a f35 can still buy American. We can sell this not only to f35 buyers as a complement to it like we do with Israel. But nations like Lithuania who worry about Russia or say Belgium or Romania or the Philippines might want a very capable aircraft that doesn't require the close relationship needed for f35 or the cost in upkeep for that stealth

I was an ejection seat mechanic for the A-6E Intruder during Desert Storm. A report came out and the best bomber was the British Tornado. Second place was the Intruder. The F-18 Hornet was in last place. Tornado and Intruder are 2 seat aircraft. At that time the Hornet was a 1 seat aircraft. For ground attack, having that extra person makes life so much easier for the pilot.

More F-22s is not an option. The production line was shut down early during the War on Terror: it would be almost as expensive to start it up again as to produce a brand new aircraft. The F-35 does not have the payload, speed and range that the F-15 EX has. It can serve as a missile truck for forward deployed F-35s/F-22s. All in all, it is an economical Fighter/bomber and Missile Truck that can bring the hurt when stealth isn't a priority; and can fire off stand-off weapons to be guided by stealth aircraft in the vicinity.

The price will go down significantly if they place larger orders. Buying in bulk saves money long term. F-15EX is the best choice long term since Lockheed production lines can't meet demand. And not every mission requires a stealth fighter. These missions need a larger multi-role fighter that can carry more weapons than an F-35 is capable of.

F-15EX is best F-15 variant and best overall conventional fighter in terms of reliability, durability, practicality, combat radius, avionics, armaments. The Air Force prefers the F-15EX today because it's supposed 5th generation fighter replacement failed to perform all the sorties required by F-15EX. F-22 failed reliability durability, long term maintenance and it's more of just an air superiority fighter and not a multi-role fighter. F-35A is too small to be the fighter bomber. F-23 is supposed to be the ideal replacement but it didn't enter active service.

Your claims about 5th Generation aircraft not performing the soties required is just utter rubbish, as is your claim about the F-22A. The F-35 too small to be a fighter bomber? Just what planet are you on? This comment shows a fundamental misunderstanding of how modern combat has worked since the introduction of mass produced GPS guided weapons, not to mention the laser guided weapons before them. No fighter flies with the huge loads your idiotic comment implies, they fly with at most four 2000lb class weapons. I think it comes down to range and payload, especially large/heavy payloads. Having a dedicated WSO also helps with the long flights, and I really think that's what the EX is optimized for; being able to get a little farther away from the tankers because of some of the longer-range A2A coming online.
@hollowpoint1057
@hollowpoint1057 2 ай бұрын
You missed the actual mission that the EX will perform. As indicated the EX is a missile truck. With new generation missiles that are much longer range, the EX will fly behind F35s. The F35 will acquire targets, and relay the targeting to its EX missile truck. The F35 can even take control of the missile guidance (if necessary) after they have fired.

Part of the problem with the drone hunter idea is that you're again shooting down a $100k (or less) drone with a $1m missile. I've wondered if subsonic fighters armed with (brace yourself) machine guns or maybe small, dumb rockets (or wire guided?) could be a far, far cheaper choice for drone sniping. We're not talking use against choppers or fighters, just for sniping drones. Ukraine is already putting some of its turboprop trainers to use in this role

Also, the F-15EX is replacing the F-15C which is currently tasked with ADIZ defense, protection of the coastline of the US. All F-15Cs are assigned to the Air National Guard for that reason. The first squadron to receive the EX is the 123rd Fighter Squadron (Redhawks) of the Oregon ANG. I love the F-15, by far one of the sexiest fighters ever made, but the F-35 for me has gone from hate to love too. The early variants had piss poor coding and FCS limitations that made them suck so bad in dogfights, but now after lots of updates and fine tuning with Block 3F, its been unbeatable at operation red flag dogfights. It's outrating F-16Cs and pulling a faster instantaneous turn than rafales and hornets and accelerates like an F-15 thanks to its massive exhaust nozzle giving it extra surface area for the thrust to push against. A boon for acceleration but not top speed, but still, it's come such a long way now in such a short period of time. It's now the only fighter deemed super maneuverable without thrust vectoring. Personally I'd love to see the F-15EX with F-22 style thrust vectoring, that would be a monster that turns an otherwise great but not best maneuverability into one of the best period. American fighters are the absolute best

the F-15EX can carry extended range new generation air-to-air missiles, making kills at around 200 miles. This will make stealth much less of an issue. With the new AF data link, they can hit ground targets using F-35/F-22 information, extending the effectiveness still further, not to mention the ability to use loyal wingman uavs. All this is a significant enhancement of AF capability. especially in the Pacific ocean.

AWACS never seems to be mentioned in the discussions regarding F-15 success. Don't get me wrong, F-15 pilots and airplanes executed their mission, and got the kills when vectored in, but it was usually the AWACS that gave them the early jump. Our overall concert of systems, and training, is really the most awesome thing right now, and it is only getting better.

I’ve favoured the F15 E since it’s first flight, and the F 15 series can out maneuver [G’z] any pilot’s ability to stay conscious. It has no equal in a dog fight… Non pilots will pick an aircraft and blindly declare its superiority. In reality pilots know that each aircraft has its own specialty, perhaps several. It takes a team to get the job done, although, driving a 15 with a perfect kill ratio and home everyday, is priceless!

I read that there is going to be a new "wild weasel" variant of the EX to replace the EA-18G. Makes sense, given its sensors and speed/alt capabilities. Boeing is looking into the AARGM-ER and NGJ pods...which would make this thing a SAM destruction machine!
@kwonekstrom2138

We don't "wild weasel" anymore. The role is SEAD. Instead of a wild weasel we throw out a MALD and met Magnum do the work. But this would definitely be one hell of an EW platform.
@skiahh

No F-15 will replace the -18. One landing on a carrier would squash those spindly little landing gear. Now perhaps they'll create an EA-15EX or something and fly in concert with the Growler, from AF Expeditionary wings, but the Navy isn't giving up its EA capability in the carrier air wing. Then again, the EW/EA mission isn't really cool enough for the air force, so they'll probably just leave it to the Navy.

What is so great about the F-15 is that it was originally built when its radar and all of its avionics weighted a whole lot more and was so much bulkier. Now with newer, more miniaturized avionics and radar, that also take less power and produce less heat, the F-15EX has a lot of extra space, power, and payload to spare. They can also benefit from 30 years of engine improvements. One quibble to what you are saying, is I would think the Stealth jets would be AHEAD of the missile truck F-15EX fighters so they would be forward deployed to guide the missiles and other weapons that the EX's launch. Its massive payload and ability to carry extra large form factor weapons will be welcome. It will be able to launch those huge hypersonic long range missiles that don't fit inside a stealth aircraft internally. And with the new battle networking systems available, it will be hooked into the battlefield info web. Weapons launched by the EX will be guided by forward deployed nodes like stealth fighters and stealthy AI drone wingmen.

In areas you do not need a low observable aircraft, the F-35 is capable of operating in "Beast Mode" using external stores which will allow it to carry nearly as many weapons as the F-15EX Eagle two.

The F35 air-to-air load out in beast mode is similar, the Eagle II has a significant edge in total weapons stations though, with 22-26 depending on the source, so the F15EX can carry a great AAM load out plus a significant air to ground package. Taking nothing away from the F-35, it definitely more survivable in forward employment in contested airspace.

The F-15EX is based upon the F-15E Strike Eagle variant. The EX has an empty weight of 15,694 kg (34,600 lb) while the F-15C has an empty weight of 12,701 kg (28,000 lb). The Strike Eagle and EX being optimized for air ground ordinance payloads while the F-15C is optimized for air-superiority. The Airforce has placed an initial order for 12 F-15CX (often shortened to F-15X) which is based upon the lighter F-15C. The Airforce, mostly for the Air Guard component and some active wings, is said to be ordering between 150 to 250 of the CX variant.
