Is The Gazelle T4 Hub Tent Good For Overlanding

I know some mention the door tripping. I never have and I’m 62. The door design is pretty much dictated by the hub style design.

I still think rooftop tents are overrated, and not enough people consider ground tents like the gazelle. It's a personal preference thing, but I worry that folks think they need a rooftop tent. They have trade-offs. With that said, I've had a gazelle for over 2 years and am pretty happy with it, but it is huge. Fits the two of us and a dog well, but it's a lot. I go with a heavy 3p backpacking tent sometimes instead due to space sometimes. The smaller tent doesn't catch as much wind either. I agree with your pros and cons, but I guy the corners out and use a tarp every time. They're good pros/cons for people to know.

Two questions: 1. Knowing what you know now about the T4, had you known all the cons you listed, would you still buy it or look at something else? 2. When you said you waterproofed the tent, what product did you use? I am considering this T4 Overland Edition, but also considering the Wawona 6P-I love the Wawona’s large vestibule. Thoughts?

Ok, to answer your questions for you: 1) Yes, I would still buy it. Though it's has its falts in places and I can't seem to lift my big feet up high enough, it is still a very good tent. It's so simple to put up and take down, and it is spacious! I did look at many different tents before I got this one year back, and honestly, it seemed to fit my bill for what I needed better than the rest. 2) The product I use is called Silicon Waterguard. I get it from my local Walmart in the camping section. It has an orange cap. It works really well. It's never leaked on me yet! My overall thoughts on your two choices: Know I know very little about the Wawona 6P tent. But i would go with the T4. It involves not poles that you need to put into the tent, and it's up in less than 1 minute. My buddy just got the Overland Edition and used it on our latest trip, and he loved it. The tent stacks and rises that come with the tent were much stronger than mine, and it came with a footprint. But for me, I hate fighting with tent poles, and this tent makes setup quick and simple. Dare I say, not quite as fast as an RTT, but damn near as fast. Hope that helps! Cheers!

@@explorationoverland - Thanks so much for your quick and helpful reply. I am enamored with the T4. Because of the vertical angle of the walls, it seems to act like a much larger tent with much more useable interior space. And I’m all about simple! Seems it would easily mount on the roof rails of my 2024 Outback. Thanks again!!

Why not use a footprint / cheap ground tarp? Harbor Freight has one on sale now for $4.97 - green - 7 mil - 7’ 4’ wide and 9’ 6” long ….

Because I never started with one . And I have never had an issue with the floor. Yes, it may get dirty and very dusty, but it's just part of it.

Wait a minute. You’re complaining that the wall hubs will invert in unusually high winds when they are not guyed-out? Really? You get lazy and blame the tent, LOL! Good grief. And you keep tripping on the door footing. Don’t join the Navy.
