Ive watched the NBA for 30 years. This is NOTTTTTT what Julius Erving did. Erving took 2 steps. Giannis takes 3. Now, just because the officials have decided to rename and interpret the first step as a “gather step” so it “doesnt count” does not actually change what is going on. And this is not “people hating on the Bucks”. No one has cared about the Bucks for decades on end. People just dont like travels being ignored and rebranded so that guys dont have to dribble basically from half court or the three point line. Rebranding the travel as two steps plus a gather step = 3 steps = traveling. Its all about entertainment, and watching these “amazing” plays and marketing. Just admit it and rewrite the rule book rather than play these dumb semantics. This is becoming like the NFL and the catch rule. People know a damn catch when they see it. They know porn when they see it. And they know a travel when they see it. I wish people had the sense to stick to their guns and the balls to not roll over just because a couple people said so.
@gandydancer9710
@gandydancer9710 6 жыл бұрын
There is no "gather step" in the rulebook, and I don't recall Nunn using that phrase, either. And the travel rule in the rulebook WAS rewritten, albeit badly. (When FIBA matched the change they did a better job, explicitly addressing the foot on the ground as the dribble is ended. Still no "gather step", which a worthless attempt to explain a concept the explainer only dimly understands.) The problem is that it is actually sometimes literally impossible for an official to "know a travel when [he sees] it". It requires focusing his eyesight on two places at once to see whether the foot hitting the ground or the hand touching the ball occurs first. In baseball the same problem occurs in plays at first base, and this is solved by substituting HEARING the ball hit the glove for looking at it. No such workaround is available in basketball. Unfortunately the tendency is to react to such incapacity by allowing nonsense. An example is the "jump stop" where you KNEW two steps had taken place (actual absolute simultaneity being impossible) but the ref's inability to detect which foot had landed first became license to treat it as one step. No, this was not always so, nor was the change a necessary one.

2:35 Slow the video down to 0.25 speed and watch with this in mind. He picks up his dribble with two hands BEFORE his left foot hits the floor which makes that left foot his 1st step. Long stride with his right foot for his 2nd step. Another long stride with his left foot for a 3rd step, which makes it a travel. In regular speed to a referee, it looks like he picks up his dribble simultaneously with his left on the floor, leaving only 2 long steps. Not all of Giannis' euro-steps are travels but a lot of them are.

aakaido There have been travels by him and other players, I feel like it's inevitable. But as far as him traveling more often than not I would say that's a lie.. it just looks that way because he's basically 7 ft and has ridiculous length that's out of the ordinary. He takes 2 steps from the 3 pt line and is already laying it up at that point... It's crazy.

MasteredTheUniverse You guys can set what you want. I know all the games I've watched this guy take 3 or 4 steps since his first game in the league. I'm an artist and have a job where it's my job to pay attention to details, no matter how small. He travels alot. I don't care how long you are, you're not getting to the rim in 3 steps right before crossing half court legally. The sad part we have the benefit of replaying every play and see how much he does. Refs miss travels more times than they call them, and they rarely call them on superstars.
@raymaster972
@raymaster972 6 жыл бұрын
aakaido You made some good points towards the end there about super stars not getting called for traveling, that's definitely true. I'm so confused. If you look at 2:35 you see Giannis collect the ball way before the 3 point line, then land on his left foot, after which he takes two enormous steps. How does that not constitute to three steps? As in: ball gathered, feet touch the ground trice? Can someone please explain because this video doesn't.
@anth_ney7289
@anth_ney7289 6 жыл бұрын
Lynxpoot After you gather you have like one free step to take additional to the other 2 steps which he hasn't used yet untill he gets to the FT line
@cliffdweller
@cliffdweller 5 жыл бұрын
@@anth_ney7289 Wrong. Once the ball is "gathered" i.e. you have ended your dribble, you get 2 steps. The play at 2:35 is a travel. He has 2 hands clearly on the ball (his dribble has ended), then he takes 3 steps.
@cliffdweller
@cliffdweller 5 жыл бұрын
@BIG POINTS I guess it all depends on how you define "gather". The refs/NBA are clearly allowing this nowadays (to increase scoring and bring more fans into the arena/TV audience), but if you read the rule book, his dribble has ended at 2:37...and his foot has not touched the ground yet. I've seen far worse examples of "gathering" than this, though. But technically, it's a travel. But rules don't matter anymore. It's all about the Benjamins. Could you imagine if the refs blew the whistle on that insane gallop to the bucket? Entertainment value trumps the rulebook.

I watched the into on .25 speed and 5 out of 7 plays are travels. It’s obvious the ball enters Giannis’ hand (gather) and then you can count 3 steps. It’s so clear his hand catches the ball before he takes his first step. (Edit) okay wow I watched the play Ronnie Nunn officiated and Gianni’s travels there as well. You can clearly see he gathers the ball BEFORE his left foot hits the ground. Ronnie counts his steps as 0, 1, 2 and ignores the first step AFTER the gather. The ball enters Giannis hand, that is the gather. Then his left foot hits the ground. The problem here is people can’t see he’s gathering the ball before his foot hits the ground. These are almost all travels in this video.

Which is traveling at any other point in nba history. This Julius Erving argument is completely fake and a cover story. JE took one or sometimes two steps and that is obvious. Its marketing. I remember when I was in middle school the euro step was just beginning to take off in terms of popularity although it had been around for a while. I used to study and practice D-Wades euro which was legal, but every time I did it in a game the refs would call a travel. I'd get so frustrated that before some games I would show the refs what I was going to do and ask if it was legal. Always a no. Said I'd have to land on two feet if I wanna take that big of a step after a gather. By the time I had started to play varsity ball years later the move was televised more and the refs understood and respected the move more. But you couldnt take 3-4 steps like in the NBA lmao. I love the move but it gotten a little out of hand with giannis and these three long steps. At some point Adam Silver is going to realize he made a league where if you're 6'9" + and agile, you can literally walk to 20,000 points. I'm willing to bet theres going to be more athletic 3s and 4s dominating the league rather than Curry types in the future and its sad because the game has progressed so much in a short amount of time with floor spacing with 3pt shooters. Imagine being a college prospect that is a FVV type, who can shoot, handle, pass, and defend well for a guard, but cant get drafted because the current traveling rules have scouts salivating for a guy like Siakam who has no real basketball skill.

How well can they exploit Teams with their defence and offence as well as playmaking regardless if their Stature and genes. if you actually notice, there are two types of eurosteps. 1 is the normal side step Wade used to do, and the other has a jab on one side(while gathering) before the sidesteps, used by Manu, Harden, Giannis and even Lebron. Those are the ones people say its a travel because of the jab step while gathering, so it looks like they took 3 steps.

I feel like people need to play more basketball to understand how these moves work. Once you start practicing these moves it becomes obvious that they are legal :P Maybe you can do a series on how to do the moves so people can understand how the footwork and timing works and recreate the situations as well so people understand. I think the idea of "gather" is lost of many.

It's more of a difference in the evolution of basketball from generation to generation. Eurostepping is definitely pushing the bounds of 2 steps and some of the clips shown were obvious travels where Giannis side steps the defender into two steps. Trust me when I say 10 years from now, you'll be wondering how players are getting away with even more egregious violations.

No man the explanation of a gather is there. You got to put two hands to end the dribble. Giannis rolls his hand on the gather step, the dribble still technically continues. Like the guy said at the top more people do need to play more basketball to understand how it work. His long strides makes you think. All the people that call travel have yet to give real proof against those who says its a gather. Theyll be like "The refs are trash this season" or "superstar treatment". All it really is to those that say travel just complain

0:09 is a clear travel. (And some others are very close) The 0 step or gather step is only applicable when your "gather foot" is clearly planted when you pick the ball up. However, oftentimes the players' timing is off but the refs just let it go for entertainment purposes

"clearly planted" NEW RULE from you? Touch the floor or not touch the floor is the dilemma.Many rule makers and referees in this comments...and the dribble finish when you have your hand under the ball or palm the ball or touch the ball with both hand.When you have the hand in the side or the top you don't have control of the ball,you can complete your gather step and make then two steps. "RULE NO. 10-VIOLATIONS AND PENALTIES,Section XIII-Traveling: A player who receives the ball while he is progressing or upon completion of a dribble, may take two steps in coming to a stop, passing or shooting the ball." "RULE NO. 4-DEFINITIONS,Section II-Dribble:a. The dribble ends when the dribbler: (1) Touches the ball simultaneously with both hands (2) Permits the ball to come to rest while he is in control of it"

giwrgos alafouzos no dude that's a ludicrous description. Because then you'd need refs with super slo-mo vision. You'd basically need super robots to referee the games. A player who doesn't have his foot clearly planted when he gathers, is most likely traveling. And when refs don't call it, they do so for entertainment purposes. End of the story

Trevor Hernandez, incorrect! They aren't travels. To be a travel, It has to be 3 clear, full steps taken after he completely gathers the ball. To my eyes, some of the time he takes a full 3 steps and sometimes it's a clear, amazingly long 2 step but this video focuses on a subjective gather point. I'm not the only person who thinks he travels by taking a third step a good portion of the tie, the purpose of this video is to debunk the idea that he travels. Hey here's an idea, compare all the video of him being called for a travel with his "euro" step move with video when he's not called for a travel and look for a difference.....oh, that's right, you can't do that because he never gets called for a travel.

Karamelleis Anthony I live in Germany and no it doesn't get called. A gather is just as normal here. The Rule is that you must take your 1-2 on the way to the basket with intention to score. That's also why Hardens Step back is not legal in Europe because he does not make an active effort to get to the basket.

I love how everyone here has watched the video but no one commenting has understood what it said. At 4:16 you can clearly see what is happening if you slow the video down. Three steps. Step 0 is the gather step, what mister Nunn is talking about in this video. This rule is unique to the NBA, but you see it all the time. Harden is the most glaring example I can think of, his gather stepback for shooting 3 pointers. You're allowed this step because your dribbled hasn't quite ended yet. The ball is clearly still in the air when Giannis starts that first step from the three point line. Then he does his two legal, allowed steps, you can count them, and then the jump and the ball is in the basket. People are still calling this a travel, but it just isn't, not in the NBA. Everyone in the NBA uses this gather step, not just Giannis.

It's simple ! All euro steps are travels ! If you watch closely he takes 3 steps anyway. Most players take a couple steps just to 'gather' the ball. Which the refs turn a blind eye to. The NBA stresses spectacular offence so any dunk is allowed. That's why defense is non existent in NBA. International rules are more strict, keeping with the traditions of bball ! You should only be allowed a jump step after gather, from one or two feet but not staggered two steps !

It used to be "gather, 1"; the league formally changed it in 2009.
