One of the reasons that everyone underestimates Michael is because they have no real idea about what he experienced in the war. They remember him as a college kid who dropped out and enlisted in the Marines the day Pearl Harbor was attacked, and they know he became an officer and was a decorated hero. When they see him again it's been nearly four years and they have no idea about the sort of hell he has experienced. Michael has led men in war, seen and done unspeakable things, and probably killed more people than all of the Don's enforcers combined. But he keeps his mouth shut about all of that because he is his father's son.

Most of the story is quite real, but of course the names, dates, and various events have been altered to protect the real people involved. The Corleone family is sort of a mish-mash of people and events surrounding the very real Genovese and Bonanno families. These are two of the five mafia families that were running New York at the time (and some say still run various organizations in New York). Many say they still own most of the politicians and judges.

Precisely. That inherently was the issue. The reason the police couldn’t take down the mafia is because of the way it was structured. Since the guys at the top never technically killed anybody (except for Michael, who in fact murdered McCluskey and Sollozo), they couldn’t charge them with the type of crimes to bring down the families. That was also the reason why they couldn’t bring down Al Capone in Chicago into he was convicted of Tax Evasion. It was only years later that this issue was solved by RICO in 1970 (or the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act). Said act made it so if you could prove an ongoing criminal conspiracy that you could charge all parties involved with the crime. Including contract killings.

One of my favorite trivia bits that made me rewatch the film was the appearance of oranges in scenes before major deaths happen; Vito was buying oranges when he was shot, had the orange rind in his mouth when he died in his garden, they were oranges at the table when Tom Hagin was having dinner with Woltz, there were oranges at the meeting of the families, all who were later assassinated… there’s a few others. Yes the actual story of the making of the movie is totally crazy. It's literally a miracle that it even got made at all the way it is. Paramount wanted to do it contemporary as in the 1970s, and shooting it in St Louis instead of NY to save money. They just wanted to cash in on the popularity of the book. They didn't want Brando as Vito because they thought he mumbled, they didn't want Al Pacino because they thought he was too small and Italian looking (no literally!) It was crazy. Luckily Francis Coppola put a stop to all that. The rest is movie history.

He is present at a lot of very important moments of the story, up to the third godfather movie where you can literally see him in situations where michael is speaking with family members and he is present. It's really easy to not see that he's always somewhere in the background because he is really not often the heart of the action and almost never speaks, but if you know who he is, you can see Michael brings him everywhere, he's also his bodyguard, and he can follow Michael in reunions where even Tom isn't allowed to be present. (I also believe he is the guy behind Carlo when Michael tells him to go to the airport in the end, just before Clemenza ends that bastard). The director of the Godfather (Francis Ford Coppola) his sister in real life is Talia Shire (Coppola) who plays Michael’s sister, Connie 🇮🇹And yes she also plays Adrian in Rocky 🇺🇸 She is also the mother of actor Jason Schwartzman. Jason Schwartzman is the cousin of Sofia Coppola. Sofia is the daughter of the Director Francis Ford Coppola, Nicolas Cage is the nephew of Francis Ford Coppola. Francis Ford Coppola had a brother named August and August had a son named Nicholas Coppola, which was changed to Nicolas Cage when Cage became an actor. So Nicolas Cage, Sofia Coppola, and Jason Schwartzman, are all first cousins. So, Talia Shire and Francis Ford Coppola are brother and sister. Carmine Coppola (from Italy) is the father of Francis Ford Coppola and Talia. He is also the films extra composer and was nominated for an Oscar along with co-composer Nina Rota. A dream come true for son, Francis Ford Coppola. Seeing his father win the Oscar. Those are just some trivia bits about how there a lot of talent within the family members👍🏼

Hi VKunia, glad to see you watched this. A couple things in case they weren’t mentioned earlier… you were right about the sister. That is indeed Talia Shire who played Adrian in Rocky. Also, during the “everybody gets assassinated” scene at the end, there is one that was in the novel that was not in the movie… Michael had Fabrizio taken out. He was the one who put bomb in the car that killed Apollonia.

Funny you should mention liking "Rocky" in the reaction video for this movie. There's another actor from "The Godfather" that was also in "Rocky" who was not named Talia Shire. Joe Spinell played Willie Cicci, one of the Coreleone family's soldiers/hit men (he's the one who shoots the mob boss who's stuck in the locked rotating doors). This actor also was in "Rocky" as Gazzo; the loanshark (who always "hears things") that Rocky was working for at the start of the movie.

Director Sophia coppola (Marie Antoinette, the Virgin Suicides, e bling ring) is the daughter of Francis Ford Coppola e director of the Godfather and is therefore Shire's niece. Nicholas Cage is also a nephew as he is the son of Her and Francis Ford's older brother August Coppola. Nicholas took the stage name of Cage(from marvel comics character Luke Cage) to avoid people accusing him of getting by on nepotism being the nephew of a famous director. Cage has only appeared in three films directed by his uncle Rumble Fish, the Cotton club and Peggy Sue for married.

Godfather & Godfather II are so perfectly in tune, each telling half of the story, that I've come to think of them as one long movie. I generally don't care for sequels or prequels but in this case you'd really be missing out. There's a lot of debate about the 3rd movie. It's definitely not on the same level as the first two but still worth seeing, my opinion.

The Character Johnny Fontane (the Singer/Actor) played by Al Martino was based on Frank Sinatrra and how he got the part in the Movie "From Here to Eternity". The Moe Green character was based on Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel. The Actor who played Luca Brazzi (Lenny Montana) had been an Enforcer for the Colombo crime family and a Professional Wrestler. You must see the 10 part Mini Series "The Offer" (on Paramount+) which covers the making the film and all the problems they had to overcome from the Mafia and Studio Executives. I have lived in Brooklyn for over 20 years. My neighborhood used to be a center of mob activity. Several future big shots got their start in the "Garfield Gang." I live on Garfield Place where they operated. 2 blocks away is where Carmine Persico's "Social Club" used to be. I think it still existed when I moved here because there was a weird building with windows boarded up saying "private club." Now it is gentrified and the mob has moved out, but down by the Gowanus Canal you still see Social Clubs.

Greetings to your cat as well as to you, V! Was that a purebred Bengal I saw on a previous reaction? Marlon Brando, who would've turned 100 back in April, always had a thing for animals and had taken in a stray hanging around the Paramount back lot by the time this film began shooting. That cat was brought in the opening scene on Brando's whim. The sound crew was always known to have had a tough time with the cat's loud purring some of which you surely picked up. A few other fun facts: the baby in the baptism scene being baptized as a boy is director Francis Ford Coppola's daughter Sophia Coppola who also directs films and who plays Michael's daughter in THE GODFATHER III (1990). Talia Shire played Connie and made her way in the ROCKY franchise and is the real life kid sister of Francis Ford Coppola. FFC is rolling out his new film MEGALOPOLIS this year. Maybe he'll retire at 85. James Caan played Sonny and who you saw being tormented by Kathy Bates in MISERY (1990). Pay attention to oranges throughout this franchise (now check out the 2nd film) because the fruit is used as a bad omen for those who come in contact with oranges. Just look at what happened to Tessio as well as to Vito. Your slide whistle effect when Clemensa got out of the car to pee at the side of the road isn't new, but is always funny. V, you stay classy...
