One of the reasons that everyone underestimates Michael is because they have no real idea about what he experienced in the war. They remember him as a college kid who dropped out and enlisted in the Marines the day Pearl Harbor was attacked, and they know he became an officer and was a decorated hero. When they see him again it's been nearly four years and they have no idea about the sort of hell he has experienced. Michael has led men in war, seen and done unspeakable things, and probably killed more people than all of the Don's enforcers combined. But he keeps his mouth shut about all of that because he is his father's son.

Precisely. That inherently was the issue. The reason the police couldn’t take down the mafia is because of the way it was structured. Since the guys at the top never technically killed anybody (except for Michael, who in fact murdered McCluskey and Sollozo), they couldn’t charge them with the type of crimes to bring down the families. That was also the reason why they couldn’t bring down Al Capone in Chicago into he was convicted of Tax Evasion. It was only years later that this issue was solved by RICO in 1970 (or the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act). Said act made it so if you could prove an ongoing criminal conspiracy that you could charge all parties involved with the crime. Including contract killings.

It's really easy to not see that he's always somewhere in the background because he is really not often the heart of the action and almost never speaks, but if you know who he is, you can see Michael brings him everywhere, he's also his bodyguard, and he can follow Michael in reunions where even Tom isn't allowed to be present. Yes Talia Shire was also Adrian in the 'Rocky' films. She is the sister of director Francis Ford Coppola and they are both aunt and uncle to Nicolas Cage, whose birth name was Nicolas Coppola.

Yes, that is Talia shire who played Adrian in Rocky. Her older brother is the director of the Godfather film series Francis Ford Coppola. Multiple members of their family are involved in the Film industry. Talia 's son by her 2nd marriage is actor Jason Schwarzman is a actor who played Gideon Gravea in Scott Pilgrim v The world, was one of the leads in Rushmore, her other son Robert is a musician and actor who is the lead vocalist of a band named Rooney and was also The love interest in the first Peincess Diaries film. Director Sophia coppola (Marie Antoinette, the Virgin Suicides, e bling ring) is the daughter of Francis Ford Coppola e director of the Godfather and is therefore Shire's niece. Nicholas Cage is also a nephew as he is the son of Her and Francis Ford's older brother August Coppola. Nicholas took the stage name of Cage(from marvel comics character Luke Cage) to avoid people accusing him of getting by on nepotism being the nephew of a famous director. Cage has only appeared in three films directed by his uncle Rumble Fish, the Cotton club and Peggy Sue for married.

Godfather & Godfather II are so perfectly in tune, each telling half of the story, that I've come to think of them as one long movie. I generally don't care for sequels or prequels but in this case you'd really be missing out. There's a lot of debate about the 3rd movie. It's definitely not on the same level as the first two but still worth seeing, my opinion.
@bdleo300Ай бұрын
Not really. Godfather II was frankly quite unnecessary, cash grab. Why do we needed Vito's origin story? Or to repeat how ruthless Michael is again and again, we know that from the first movie. Yet no one dares to say so even today, while all hate is focused on the 3rd movie.

Vicky, if you're interested, there was a 10-episode mini-series called "The Offer" on Paramount+, a somewhat fictionalized retelling of the making of the first Godfather film. It was very good.
@tommiller48953 ай бұрын
The Character Johnny Fontane (the Singer/Actor) played by Al Martino was based on Frank Sinatrra and how he got the part in the Movie "From Here to Eternity". The Moe Green character was based on Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel. The Actor who played Luca Brazzi (Lenny Montana) had been an Enforcer for the Colombo crime family and a Professional Wrestler. You must see the 10 part Mini Series "The Offer" (on Paramount+) which covers the making the film and all the problems they had to overcome from the Mafia and Studio Executives. It is a miracle the movie was ever made!

Please, please, everybody watch the limited series “The Offer” it’s about the making of The Godfather, and Hollywood in the 70’s in general, and it’s probably my favourite series maybe ever. It has some of the greatest examples I’ve ever seen of actors portraying real people, and the writing is just so goddamn good. Edit: I’m glad to see that so many people feel the same way I do, and are shouting THE OFFER! From the rooftops lol.

I have lived in Brooklyn for over 20 years. My neighborhood used to be a center of mob activity. Several future big shots got their start in the "Garfield Gang." I live on Garfield Place where they operated. 2 blocks away is where Carmine Persico's "Social Club" used to be. I think it still existed when I moved here because there was a weird building with windows boarded up saying "private club." Now it is gentrified and the mob has moved out, but down by the Gowanus Canal you still see Social Clubs.

Greetings to your cat as well as to you, V! Was that a purebred Bengal I saw on a previous reaction? Marlon Brando, who would've turned 100 back in April, always had a thing for animals and had taken in a stray hanging around the Paramount back lot by the time this film began shooting. That cat was brought in the opening scene on Brando's whim. The sound crew was always known to have had a tough time with the cat's loud purring some of which you surely picked up. A few other fun facts: the baby in the baptism scene being baptized as a boy is director Francis Ford Coppola's daughter Sophia Coppola who also directs films and who plays Michael's daughter in THE GODFATHER III (1990). Talia Shire played Connie and made her way in the ROCKY franchise and is the real life kid sister of Francis Ford Coppola. FFC is rolling out his new film MEGALOPOLIS this year. Maybe he'll retire at 85. James Caan played Sonny and who you saw being tormented by Kathy Bates in MISERY (1990). Pay attention to oranges throughout this franchise (now check out the 2nd film) because the fruit is used as a bad omen for those who come in contact with oranges. Just look at what happened to Tessio as well as to Vito. Your slide whistle effect when Clemensa got out of the car to pee at the side of the road isn't new, but is always funny. V, you stay classy...

I always imagine that Michael really did love Appollonia and that when she died, he cut love out of his life. That reunion scene with Kay is so sinister, with the black car following them. It's almost like a kidnapping. I don't think he really loves Kay. He just needs a waspy wife to help him take the next step for the family.

There's definitely a great story being told but THAT'S actually the problem. They're telling; not showing. And to be quite frank about it, 90% of people who claim these to be their favorite movies are just doing it to be a part of the crowd. If you want to watch a really fun movie with Godfather vibes, you need to watch The Freshman. It stars Matthew Broderick who plays a freshman film student at NYU who gets involved with Marlon Brando who reprises a Godfather type character. A running gag in the movie is how much Brando's character resembles Vito Corleone. And in Broderick's film class they are studying Godfather 2!

Abe Vigoda (Salvatore) is perfect in this. For something completely different, you can see his hilarious side as Sgt. Fish in the Barney Miller TV series (and his spinoff series “Fish”). He also became a meme when his death was falsely reported in 1982. After that it was a running joke. He also was in the Snickers commercial “Game” along with Betty White, which aired on Superbowl XLIV in 2010.
