I'm so shocked about the xacto knife. My experience is the exact opposite. My cuts and timing are great with the xacto knife and suck with scissors. I think that's because I always use an xacto knife so I'm good at using it; whereas you primarily use scissors so that's why you did better with those. It's like all tools. The one you use the most are the ones you're going to be great at. I am impressed that the new tool was almost as good as your everyday tool so I'll definitely be looking into it. Thanks for the video.

I have one of these and decided the lack of precision is because you can’t see the exact point where you’re cutting as the sticking out bit that holds the blade obscures your view.

Back in the late 1960s, I watched my sister cutting a stencil for a poster to be silkscreened. She used one of the standard X-Acto blades (X-Acto calls it a #15), the one that is a little off the axis of the handle, which when used with the blade not tightened into the handle, swiveled just like this as she drew with it.

It was very fun to watch someone test all of these. In my experience I find the xacto knife to be the fastest and easiest but they do take practice. Keep in mind we have been using scissors since being old enough to do it. The swivel knives have been around a long time. Originally there were exact knife type swivel knives and then lots in between then and now. I just never wanted to learn to use the swivel knife. I think they will be the fastest but will require the most practice. Just my 2 cents.

I wanted this for R/c car shell painting. First you wash the inside, and then double coat liquid mask the inside of the shell, and then draw your desired designs on the outside of the shell, and peel, and paint layer by layer the inside! This prevents your paint from scraping off when you wreck your R/C cars, buggies, truggies, and touring cars. and thought if this thing works anything like the commercial 😮I could get down right in it for some of the cleanest paint jobs anyone has ever seen😁

Lack of precision in cutting with blades is just from familiarity. You’ve been using scissors since kindergarten. You’re just accustomed to using them, they aren’t inherently any more precise. And using a swiveling blade actually has advantages over scissors, especially when cutting small intricate shapes with tight inside corners. I use a traditional saddle type swivel knife for leather tooling. When there are very small, tight cuts, I have two knives with the same little swivel blades that that contraption has, they just aren’t offset like that. Ones like a writing pen with a retractable little swivel blade and the other is a finger wrap design. I think I may get one of those just because the offset seems like it would make it easier to see your work. Thanks!

Well done video. I am not a crafter, but a modeler. Knives are essential in everything I do. However, the Xacto fails to satisfy. I often use a single edge razor blade and have recently begun using scalpel knives and holder. That is uncomfortable to hold for sure. Scissors have always been a struggle for me. I am curious enough about this tool to pick one up, but due to my strange habits, likely won't be a go to tool for me.

The gyro cut is a cutting tool with safety in mind. It works best on a hard surface, like acrylic cutting plates, a sheet of copper works well and will not dull the blade:) self healing mats are way too soft. And one more thing please do not cut on any glass! stay safe and happy crafting;)
@thepain3212 жыл бұрын
What’s wrong with glass? I cut on a heavy grain bamboo cutting board. Or a polished dark green marble slab. Straight cuts versus rounded precision.

I bought one of those gyros when they first came out. I found it didn't stay sharp for long . The people demonstrating it on a UK craft channel used a sticky cutting mat to hold the paper down. I found that this glued up the blade too .

Hey there. You said in the very beginning of your video that it doesn’t go through thick paper/material. This is because there are 3 different knives for the gyro cut pro. You have the first size knive, which is for thin paper, but there are size 2 and 3 for thicker and even thicker paper and other materials. Please have a go with the other knives. Much appreciated your video comparisons.

Si the blade swivels then! I had something that swivelled, has replacement blades, but needed a template with slits to put the blade in and guide it, wasn't free handed like this. Blade came out, and I can't seem to get it back in there. Thus looks cool, would be great for those interior shapes like between tree branches, insides if letters like Q and D and R, inside window frames. Better than scissors for those.

Good grief, I just thought of trying to make a holder for traditional X-Acto blades that can swivel. Dang, I need a 3D printer. Also, there's nothing worse than trying to cut with a dull blade. I wonder how long the blade lasts, how much replacements cost, or if they can be sharpened. I have been sharpening x-acto blades with a super fine sanding file I bought recently and it doesn't make them like new but it does give them extra life.

I'm not sure what they patented or think they invented there. These are called a drag knife or tangential knife and have been around for a very long time. You'll find those blades in just about every vinyl cutter on the market. You might be able to find a replacement blade that fits that from vinyl cutters, if you can't find one anywhere else. You'll find bigger ones on cnc machines where the blade rotation is also under computer control so it is always at the perfect angle. Some can cut up to 1/4" material.

@@keener57 That might be their main marketing strategy, but its real power is in making smooth curves. It is always easier to make precision cuts with certain specific directional movements of your fingers, hands, and arms. Also, visibility becomes an issue when you are cutting parts of a shape that are farthest away, or in a direction that is hidden by your hand.
