I really liked the review, but I just can‘t understand the brand snobbery Hyundai is one of the biggest car brands in the world. All cars for the european market are engineered by germans Just take Albert Biermann who is responsible for some of the best BMW M cars out there. Just go to the VW configurator, take a Golf GTI and put everything in you get with the hyundai. It will be way over 40.000€, the Hyundai is way cheaper and the better performing car.
@PetrolPed6 жыл бұрын
I don’t disagree 👍
@theRealAV8r6 жыл бұрын
Exactly @Steven Strain. Perception alone literally means huge $$$ - just look at stock markets - or the high priced reliability hell called Land Rover lol But as the Hyundai brand continues to evolve, their prices are basically now the same league as their competitors, equal or more depending on options. Indeed the very fact that 'Hyundai' is even being discussed/compared/ranked or even cussed out so much now is proof they've won. Nobody talks about Tupolev as a Boeing competitor, they talk about Airbus, because they took on the giant with products that were consistently desirable enough to compete.
@dylandetails3616 жыл бұрын
See the big deal about your comment is the last line... Usually it's "well the Hyundai doesn't perform as well, but it's way less expensive". With this car, now it's "the Hyundai is less expensive AND it performs better"
@mattsamuels36076 жыл бұрын
This comment is brand snob, I'm a VW GTI guy and I respect the i30N. It is faster than the Golf GTI and sounds amazing. Obviously the GTI is better quality and the best daily hothatch IMO. However Hyundai have smashed it with the i30N. Tbh brand snobbery just mean people are proud of their cars despite what it may be.

Good honest review and very interesting comments ! I really like the N and it’s a great package ..however you do get what you pay for. I’ve driven a mk 7.5 Gti on several occasions and the cabin / interior is so much better. The Gti feels a lot more premium especially as the N has a stuck on tablet. I’ve been a passenger in an N and it sounds better than a GTI and the pops out a smile on your face. The ride though in N mode was pretty unpleasant. The difference I found with the GTI is you can put it in its sportiest settings and it’s still a great drive/road car..and well damped for uk roads. Performance wise they felt the same and point to point you wouldn’t be able to split them. Both great cars and have their individual appeal to certain customers. Hyundai though I felt was a bit more rough and ready.

Not sure about your channel name but you are doing an excellent job in your reviews. They are mature, well considered and not just a hoon around a track. For a 40+ car buyer I think your reviews really give me what I am after. Only negative I see in the i30n is the interior. For the money I would expect something a little better. After 3 yrs of hard suspension on crappy roads that thing is going to rattle like crazy

Good honest knowledgeable review as ever. I think that you summed up the pros and cons of the car well and it showed that you'd had the car a few days to get to know it. Sure there are some issues with the quality of the interior but I currently drive a Fiesta ST which is a classic example of Ford spending all the money on the driving dynamics and nothing on the interior save for the touch points. I get where Hyundai are coming from and at the price point I think it's a major contender for any driving enthusiast's money. After all, we all can't afford £40-50k dream machines. Sure it will depreciate but surely that's on the side of the buyer after 12 or 18 months and with a 5 year unlimited mileage warranty where's the risk? it's definitely on my radar and I think a test drive is a must. I've a hunch that it won't be long before it becomes a fairly common sight on UK roads. Thanks again, Pete for an unbiased view. Cheers

No-one can give goods for free. For this car, they "directed" all their resources to driving pleasure and comfortable-sporty adaptive handling. I sat in the car at the dealer days ago, and the quality of everything you can touch matches the average quality of the B segment (Fiesta, Clio, and so on), so it's one segment below the i30's segment (Focus, Golf, and so on). The stock audio system quality is lower than that in the new Polo, let alone Golf. I didn test the climate control system, and it is not on an equal level with the Golf's, or the Megane's (again, it's more like B segment than C segment cars'). What you get in return is the maximum possible driving pleasure/price ration, and pretty good reliability as for the quality of the parts that aren't touched/seen all the time.

Keeping in mind that Hyundai is NOT a luxury car brand, this is an awesome car! N stands for performance, and not luxury. To me this is kind of a "tweener" car. More performance than the GTI or the ST, but not as much as the Type R, Golf R or the RS. But the price also reflects that. Albert Biermann said it's about the way this car feels. I think they got it right!

Great review, I've been running a new i10 the past 12 months my first Hyundai and have to say any brand snobbery has gone out the window and that's running a BMW M140i alongside it. Hyundai deserve to do well as they are producing some really good cars now, you need to own and run one to appreciate this. I would consider an i30N most definitely however the front axle tramp is concerning, maybe a different tyre choice would help.

Had a new Golf GTD 20 odd grand. Almost every time you set off some alarm went off warning you of a problem. Just outside warranty period sensors started playing up all over the place and needed replacing. Went for a service around 30000 miles and it needed £2500 spending on it. Damaged wheel on pothole £750 for 1 wheel from VW plus additional money for tyre. Ended up buying 4 lookalike wheels inc tyres for £800. Now have new Kia Ceed Gt with a 7 year warranty done 33000 miles no problems. Bring it on Kia, Hyundai etc value with bulletproof warranties.

Thanks for the info👍 Seems like a drivers car. I had a V6 manual, '99 Ford/Mercury Cougar and it would "wheel hop" under aggressive acceleration too. Takes away some of the potential "street cred" a front drive, hot hatch should have. The custom mode seems really intuitive, but like you Pete, it's frustrating how the radio presets never change, but the driving modes do. Come manufactures ... get it together!

Revisiting this video, now I own a 2020 I30N due to this review. I collected it in September and tracked it at Anglesey just after break in very wet conditions, the car was amazing.That’s another reason I bought it, track warranty, they want you to track it and cover you to do so. The axle tramping you get is present in the wet as you demonstrated, but I put this down to the P zeros if I’m honest. I found them quite good at Anglesey but I will be changing to Pilot 4S’s as I think they will almost eliminate the issue. It’s such a fun drivers car, the exhaust and customisation just make it such a good package. Facelift due soon and the new DCT option too. The skipping part when its damp or wet the road it is cause by the tire trying to get grip so it creates a bouncy effect and that translate to big hits on the suspension and that punch is transferred to the body and dash board, Plus at the same time the traction control kick in increasing the bag when it apply the brake to try to get traction. Basically is a mix of events that create that, you can try getting a better tires for the rain to increase the wet performance but at the same time it will decrease the dry performance that you get with a ultra high performance summer tire. So nothing its perfect in any car.
@invisiblekid995 жыл бұрын

Agree, its competing with a golf gti, and if vw were so good why dont they offer decent warranties giving customers trust in their brand. Ill stick to Hyundai (daily runner 4years ownership CRDI 136000km i20) best change ever from VW , and again if you are the type who drive cars 12months you cannot rate reliability by just taking it for a Sunday drive. VW is not what they were once upon a time.

Not a bad package for a mid 20's price point - I like that the Korean manufacturers will stand a 5 or 7 year warranty. Sounds good too. The front end breaking under load doesn't sound good though and the interior really lets it down. And the badge doesn't help either. That drive assist thing does my head in too - I understand it is an EU emissions thing. You just get used to jumping in the car and hitting Drive Select 4 times on startup.

Overall Peter likes the i30N and that upsets the brand snobs. Wish Hyundai Canada brought this than the Veloster N.

I really like these and they’re cooler for being rarer than a GTI. They’ve done an amazing job for their first attempt at a hot hatch. I cane very close but discounts weren’t forthcoming and an M140 was the same overall cost and less per month and it’s performance is a step up and the engine is fab.

Went to have a look at one in person today, in comparison with the Polo GTi, I think the interior is actually nicer - the Polo has plastics on the door, the i30N I sat in had soft-feel dash and door panelling, it felt really nice to be in - I can't say I've sat in a recent Golf GTi, but the i30N was significantly better than I expected...very nice car.

@@shonc.100 They can do what they do because, at least in Europe, people will buy their cars over anything else, no matter the quality/price ratio. The Polo and the Golf were the two most sold cars in Europe in 2019. Just think of that.

If people flash back to 2001 when the first Civic Type R was sold in the UK it was a perfect cocktail. Only £16k 200bhp 0-60 in 6.4 and probably one of the best rifle bolt transmissions ever. Fast forward to 2018 and this just isn’t the same recipe. It’s not all about the power as you mention Pete but in this instance it’s just far too expensive to undercut the Germans. It needs to be like £20-£23k to make it a financial proposition. That said I’m sure it’s a cracking drivers car. Keep up the great reviews Pete.

JustBlinkMe1 pre facelift Type R was 6.6 seconds 0-60. The face lift was 6.4 to 60. Trust me I’ve owned 2 of them 👍🏼 .....oh and an EP3 would definitely out perform an ST Fiesta in every respect. But remember for back then that was game changing performance from a hot hatch.

I can say that its really going to be hard to convince the South African market to buy into the I30 N as the majority of our consumers are loyal VW fans. I for one really do appreciate the Hyundai brand and I wouldn't mind trading my Hyundai Grand I10 for the I30N provided the pricing is reasonable.

Really enjoyed watching this and listening to you too, you're one of the few people who actually give an honest opinion and don't talk garbage when reviewing a car. I'm hoping an i30n will be my next car, I drive a Clio 182 at the moment which I'm really enjoying but I fancy something newer. You mention about it skipping in the wet, wouldn't this occur with any car in those kind of conditions? Also it could be down to the tyres too, I've never rated Pirelli tyres so I wonder what an i30n would be like with a better tyres such as Michelin Supersports perhaps? Anyway it was a good review so thank you!

Wish they put this car in the states. We got a dumbed down version over here. What a load of crap! We have the full sunroof though. I have a 2013 elantra gt. 156k miles on it so far and not a single issue. Runs great! The clutch has maybe 20k-30k before it needs replacement as I can tell it's getting pretty worn, but thats still really good! Hyundai owner sense 2002 here. I'll never switch. They've just been really good to me all my adult life. Guess I am a brand snob. Its just that little crooked H I'm a snob for is all.

I don't care what badge it is, I don't care about image etc. Actually I tell a lie, I'm more the opposite instead of going for the popular brands VW, BMW, Audi, Ford etc; I avoid them and go for lesser known brands like a Suzuki etc simply because you generally get more for your money, less insurance etc and they are rarer! so more unique. I really want to try one of these i30 N's, wish I could afford 2 cars.

Speaking of the concept of brands though, brand cachet is built over many decades through good product, reliability, and intelligent marketing. Eventually with enough time, talent recruitment, and gradual improvements companies find success and people tend to very quickly forget the ultra modest roots most companies started from (this takes decades). Once major success is achieved it sadly quite often leads to corporations with brands so powerful they become ingrained in people's psyches as synonymous with greatness and can get away with selling mediocre/overpriced products, committing corporate abuse (Hyundai's fuel mileage tampering?) and highly controversial or downright awful acts (anyone still remember VW monkeygate?). Perhaps we can all be a little more cognizant when we buy products from these brands, and try not to be brand sheep or worse fanboys, and see them for what they are i.e. products to bring us some satisfaction in our fairly mundane lives and transportation.

Good honest review again, well done. Would still look to a Golf however if the interior and tramping issues can be addressed, then I think given time Hyundai will overcome the badge snobbery, and would be a welcome contender in the sector. Brand snobbery is there for a reason; it may be a good car but if I was looking to buy a car in this sector / price I would favour a 1 year old Golf GTI; I thought this too when you reviewed the 2L F-Type, would I prefer a 1 or 2 year old V6, yes I would; and the same applies to the Alfa ??, a 1 year old M3 any day. But why bother when a 1 year old S4 Avant would do it all ?! But, as always, enjoyed the review.
