Perfect info. Just what I was looking for with insta360 camera. Unless go pro gets the long stick, I will go for 360. I agree, mic is not good. (But with subtitle embedded, i bet it’s fine for viewers. I didn’t even know u had to get a separate rode laverlier. That’s a lot of effort!) also, its great that you covered the battery topic.
@riseandalpine11 ай бұрын
Hey Sam! The 360 is just way more versatile than a traditional go pro and is ideal for making social media/vertical clips (go pro sucks at that). I much prefer the insta app to Go Pro's, easier to use and they don't charge you a rip off subscription. The Mic is 100% not necessary, I just toss it on on the super windy days for fun to try and improve my filming. Battery is 5x better than the go pro. I burn through 3 go pro hero 11 enduro battery's before this one dies. Go Pro dies fast in the cold but I can leave this on my head all day and it doesn't seem to get affected.

Glad you liked it Will! Will be interesting to see what action camera brands come out with next. Insta360 always seems to be a little ahead of the curve when it comes to cool technology. Cardo looks interesting, would be sweet for instructors, teaching kids and chatting with friends!
@HawgRiderBC11 ай бұрын
@riseandalpine The Cardo/Sena headsets for motorcycles work fantastically, and the communication with other riders increases your safety greatly. But as far as for skiing, I think it will be too much of a distraction. Maybe for instructors and those taking ski lessons, it might be useful?

Hey man great video, just wondering for the helmet mount, do you use the flexible adhesive mount, or one of the ones from the helmet mount bundle?
@riseandalpine11 ай бұрын
I just use one of the regular ones. Helmet mounts are kind of tricky to pace depending on the brand of the helmet. The best spot is a little closer to the forehead, but my Smith helmet only really has a decent area right in the centre.
@RaymandTo10 ай бұрын
Could you show us the stitch line when you're using the helmet mount? I think placement is not easy with my One R when using the helmet mount because when you look backwards, the stitch line makes the helmet distorted. Forward view is not a problem
@riseandalpine10 ай бұрын
I actually don't have any experience with the oneR. However, the only way to not have the stitch line with the head mount looking backwards is to keep it completely vertical. 99% of the time I have the stitch line unless I use a unicorn mount. Since I don't use that view very often I find it doesn't affect production. Let me know if you find a solution!

Yo James! Glad you covered lens durability as that is my biggest concern for this camera as a perspective buyer. Have you ever been worried taking this through some tight tree runs with it on your head or the selfie stick? Also, they have little protective lens covers aside from the cap you showed in the video and I was curious if you’ve tried those?
@riseandalpine11 ай бұрын
Hey! I hit tree branches too all the time, have had some gnarly tomahawks and drop my selfie stick a little too much. I've only put one scratch into the X3 lens over two seasons of filming. Even with the scratch I continued to film for most of last season and it was barely noticeable. I've smashed Go Pro lenses as well so its just one of those luck of the draw things. Insta360 offers a $50 damage protection where you can send it in for repair during the first year if something happens, they cover shipping unlike Go Pro who makes you cover shipping both ways, pay a fee and pay for the stupid subscription (I've really got it out for GoPro and their greasy subscription model). I've tried the sticky lens guards but find they can mess up the stitching a little bit so I don't think they are worth it. My trick with the headcam and tree skiing is to angle it down and forward. Branches will hit the top of the camera instead of the lens directly. Skiing with the head cam vertical is risky in the trees because you might forget it is there!

I enjoy your content. I do not enjoy the super wide angle shots that seem to be pervasive in skiing and mountaineering content these days. With the wide angle shots it is impossible to understand the nature of the terrain and the gradient. Seeing terrain and gradient is why I watch the content in the first place.
@riseandalpine11 ай бұрын
I totally agree. POV ski filming makes it impossible to really see how steep terrain is. Even a traditional camera can't capture gradient unless it is at a far distance or specific side angle. Drone shots do a pretty good job at showing terrain. Given my skill level, I doubt I'll ever have a real film crew following me (we'll leave that for the boys at MSP). It's still cool I can play with a cam like the 360 to get me much closer than some of the other options.

I find the X3 video quality doesn't look great in flat or low lighting (basically whenever it's not fully bright and sunny), is that just kinda how it is with this camera? Anything special you do to improve video quality other than exporting at 4K? All of your videos look fantastic in terms of quality!
@riseandalpine8 ай бұрын
Exporting in 4k using the desktop app is the trick. You can also do some color grading for low light but I don't often do so. Action camera's just don't have the sensors for flat light conditions, go pro is a million times worse. The X4 will be interesting to see with the new sensor, also the ace pro is good for flat light. If you're trying to get shots in flat light you have to flip to selfie mode or get in the trees so you have a little bit of perspective.
