As a 90s kid, I absolutely hated that era... it was full of bullying and boredom. My personal issue with the internet is the fact it was so quickly commodified. The minute we start hiding the magic from it's users- formatting algorithms, tying everything to accounts, putting trust in third parties to hold our information instead of teaching tech literacy- it becomes a consumerist warzone. Every mainstream social media is a fight to grab and keep your attention for as long as possible, even KZbin. It's another way to push products and take advantage of the users. You don't even *own* the tech you own- there's no right to repair, you own a license to it. There are some good things to learn from movements like Web Revival and YesterWeb that focus on user-first internet: personal websites, web-rings and a more laid-back, modern-yet-not approach to internet spaces. Is the internet destroying us? Yes, in the way we use it currently.
@echoicmimicry
@echoicmimicry Ай бұрын
Totally agreed. With increasing reliance on tech and the Internet, it's surprising how few people understand these under the hood -- or even on a basic level, for that matter. I don't wish to blame the individual, but as a whole we have put way too much faith into businesses to provide us services which should probably be based on at least open-source collaboration. I have made a major shift over the past 2-3 months to Linux on my computers, and it's made me fall in love with learning more. I'm not a computer science major or anything, just a human being fed up with the current landscape. I remember when it wasn't this bad, but it's been building up over time.

Its not only a product, loneliness became a tool regarding the male loneliness epidemic (or whatever it is called in the MRA's community). A tool used against feminism and women's rights too, a tool that serves its purpose of showing "look what happened because of you feminists", another scarecrow like the "destruction of the family" "destruction of the "natural" order of society" and other buzzwords

I think the internet is, historically speaking, relatively new and still figuring out ways to support people in need effectively. Communication is essential for these organizations and movements, so maybe this year was a rough start to something bigger. The internet was already shown to be a powerful force, it’s just a matter of reflection and critique on how we can improve for a better good.

Agreed. The internet is one of the most revolutionary inventions of all time. We've only had it for a quarter of a century, 1-2 generation's span. As we witness the pervasion of online corporatism and harm, we're getting smarter and more apt at living with a form of communication which will continue to follow us until it's own end or we develop a new evolution of it. The internet is NOT the source of our problems; it's simply an informative tool. Loneliness, accessibility, and education are entirely seperate topics that deserve proper study instead of a lazy opt-out of blaming the binary code.

Thank you for your brilliant explanation on the difference between boycotting and abstinence! Personally I prefer to abstain from quite a lot of products and brands for a variety of reasons, but the success of boycott movements relies on strategic targets for maximum impact, and whilst I will judge others for crossing the BDS picket line, I won't judge others for not abstaining from all the brands that I choose to.

The Internet is a blessing and a curse. I had barely any friends for a while and on the Internet I found connection on a Sims forum. I lied about who I was (turned myself into the person I wanted to be), but it didn't matter because it wasn't like any deeper friendships formed there. I was 12 or 13 and it saved me. I don't know what I would've done without it. The Internet also made me understand my mental health problems, helped me learn about queer topics and that I myself am queer and provided so much entertainment during some of my darkest hours. But it also fed that darkness and isolated me even more from the people in my actual life. I would consider myself a bookworm, but I consider the Internet the reason I barely read anymore because there's so much entertainment on here that I can speed up if I have little time or enjoy while cooking or doing chores. And that sucks. I wouldn't want to miss it but I feel a bit too dependent on it too.

As a 90s/2000s kid, this video hit all the right arguments to me. The internet is a great thing, it's predatory algorithms & constant monetization that have made it the cesspit that it is today. (From my point of view, at least) My dad is a computer engineer, so I was always surrounded by computers & was definitely The Internet Kid to my friends lmao... Yet it had virtually zero effect on my well-being at the time. I was still doing doing outdoor activities and spending time with friends every week. My mood was rarely ever impacted by content I saw online. I just logged in to play games, practiced my writing and drawing skills, spoke to people I would not have had to chance to speak to otherwise, and then I logged off to live my life exactly as I was living it before. So I never bought into the "internet is destroying our generation" narrative. What changed, to me at least, is when everything became algorithm-based & people started seeing it as a money making tool. All of a sudden, my experience online was dictated not by what I wanted to see, but what giant corporations wanted me to see (which is usually inflammatory, rage-bait content). And everyone looking to make money online started abiding by those seedy algorithms, meaning more and more incendiary & divisive content fueling users' anger at the world or each other all for a quick buck. On top of it, every content being sponsored started making it impossible to tell truth from lie and what was once an amazing resource to educate yourself became full of bought content boosted to make products look good. (When was the last time you knew if a foundation, for example, was actually good or if that influencer was paid to say that product was good?) It's the endless pursuit of money & productivity that took away all the freedom and fun that made the internet a beneficial addition to our lives. And that's not the internet's fault, it's the fault of the mega-corporations that have made it what it is today. So, I'm grateful you put these arguments out there. Your content never disappoints.

I am queer, and I also an introverted naturally (an may be on the spectrum), so I found it hard to make friends in real life until I got older. The internet, socially and for learning, helped me gain confidence and self love, and I found a few communities on here. People who dislike the internet are people that use it for toxic and nefarious reasons (like stalking old friends or showing off). IMO, the internet is a beautiful invention, but just like most new inventions, people find a way to use it to abuse others or explain why we shouldn't progress.

As someone who was in high school in the 90s, I can tell you that we weren't that happy. Younger people romanticise the past but in reality it wasn't that great. Furthermore, for many of us, we would have been much better off with access to the internet and social media. We would've been far less isolated. As a neurodivergent, queer weird kid going to a small town high school and living in a dysfunctional and unsupportive home environment, I believe that things would have been much better for me had I had access to a world (and people) outside of my social bubble and to information and stories that countered the myths and lies and bad information that I was constantly being fed. I would not have been so isolated and lonely and my mental health probably would've been much better. The internet is not the cause of loneliness or the loss of community. And not every community is good for everyone. It's possible to be in a community physically but isolated and lonely - and it's much worse when you've got nothing outside that community and don't know how you could make your life better outside of it.

Thank you! All I saw was praise for the blockout, but let's be honest... It wouldn't do anything. It's so much bigger than us, sadly.

Despite all of the technological advancements in our daily lives, we are still expected to work 1/3 of our time (sometimes more). A expectation that was established in the industrial age so long ago. That's crazy to me. Of course it's going to play a factor in the rise of loneliness in our social media/internet age. That's so crazy to me

Yes, the internet is 30 years old, but it keeps changing as we develop new technologies. Of course it hasn't gained the same acceptance as books, radio, and TV/film.

In regards to the “expanding boycott” section, I really see this so often in the US. People have unfortunately hard-coded that “individualism” takes priority over everything, and we have a cultural narrative that enforces that “speaking out” as a sole advocate for change “against the grain” is not only heroic, but an intrinsic part of American culture. Americans just really, truly hate being told what to do, often to their detriment because it completely nerfs community solidarity when every single person is determined to go their own way, and it’s so very all or nothing in regards to advocacy. The lack of self-awareness to this issue is astonishing, because so many groups that would absolutely hate being labeled “totally American about this” are acting about as American as a cheeseburger in my stomach.

I was one of those 90s kid... and the people who think the internet has "robbed" us of "vitality" obviously wasn't there. Even by the 90s, our (already pretty meagre) options for community was being dismantled - that's the problem, not the internet. I'm grateful for the internet - I wouldn't even have known what capitalism is if it wasn't for the internet.

On a lighter note (and I understand this is for people who have the financial liquidity to own either a PC or a gaming system), I have made so many friends on a free MMO called Palia. It’s basically MMO Stardew Valley with some high fantasy elements. There is a “real money” option but that only applies to cosmetics and does not affect your gameplay at all, so you can play completely for free and enjoy this entire game of which the goal is to build community.

great video! your videos always make me want to respond with an essay of thoughts. the internet has been so important to me, without it i would surely lose meaningful connection to friends who i knew in person but we moved away and i would have never met so many friends online (with internet safety in mind!). i would not have learned SO many things because as a white person growing up in a rural southern town, even with it being fairly diverse, my upbringing was still extremely whitewashed and platforms like tiktok and reddit have taught me so much about other cultures and informed me on the genocide and its history. short form content has definitely fried my already short attention span and the gigification of creating only pushes short form, things like "tiktok shop", and ads more (not counting sponsorships in ads bc thats the creator not the Platform). it is so unfortunate that capitalism overruns these spaces (twitter --> x) that were not perfect but were productive in educating and connecting.

25:42 I am not aware of research that shows social media use causes loneliness/depression/etc, the link found is usually the opposite. But I will be happy to learn if there is research I have missed.

While i do not advocate for any kind of life without the internet I am very glad we did not have it, or at least the social media aspect of it, when I was in High School. I graduated in 1998 and I know that, as an already depressed teen, I would have been horribly ill-equipped to deal with the amount of online bullying that goes on today. I am also extremely glad we did not have cell phones in classrooms. I cannot understand how cellphones in class was ever allowed to be a thing.

I was lonely wayyyy before social media was a thing and it was probably worse back then. I finally made my first friend in ten years only to lose her in a month and I'm back to feeling like shit again. Will it be another 10 years before I make another friend?
