I'm hoping we see more "yaktoons." I like the Jackson 360 Angler, but it's pretty expensive from where I'm sitting. I'd like to see that, but modular, something that could be packed in a car. They're still fairly light, all things considered, but appear to be extremely stable compared to a regular kayak. I've even come up with a couple designs for a fold in half tiny pontoon that I'd like to take a crack at making. A two piece aluminum frame with full width hinge, so it folds right before where you'd want a seat. Have a utility mount that bolts on to physically block the hinge on each side. Make two part pontoons that slot together and get pinned so they can't separate. I was wanting it to fold up into the bed of a pickup and be able to close the tailgate. And if someone reads this and wants to make it, just means I don't have to build it myself.

I have a question about Native and Bonafide kayaks. I've been searching around for fishing kayaks made in the US and came across a Bonafide video. A commenter mentioned that Bonafide was now "in bed" with Native as to imply Native was a shady company and now Bonafide was to. Do you have any idea what that person could be talking about? I don't want to give any money to people with questionable business practices or a poor history. Thanks for your time.

Agreed! I think company’s need to be able to take criticism, as anglers spend 3k, 4k, 6k on our yaks, it should come with a warranty that covers everything for at-least 3 years. That’s the main reason I got rid of my 2020 Hobie mirage outback. When I bought the Hobie it was the best and with in my first year of owning a Hobie their customer service changed for the worst. I now own a native titan x 12.5 within my first month the propel drive broke and they exchanged it right away and didn’t charge me for anything. That’s what we need in this industry, trust goes along way.

I think the industry is going to have to not only take the feedback from their pros on product improvement "At the Speed of Light" but also give the customer improved product support. $6000 should mean a 6 year no haggle hull warranty. Not 3 years of grey area. Merry Xmas

The game changer will be a solar powered kayak that will run all day, and include a retractable live well, and a rotating seat that allows easy access to all the equipment behind the seat.The Jackson Big Tuna has a live well and I loved it. I made a waterproof insert for a 12V battery, the weight of which, lowered the VCG and really helped with stability. I used that when I was flounder spearing. I had a Hobie Outback but I missed the live well and hated the continuing maintenance required on the pedal drive. I'm old and heavy. Last year I bought an extra wide 14 ft Jon boat which solved the stability issue, but losing the independence and versatility of the kayak made the trade off nearly a wash. I had trailers for all my kayaks, so for me, loading and offloading was not a problem. At 80 I still prefer fishing from my kayak in quiet water.

Semper Paradus, Captain. A week after getting my Titan 10.5 (nearly 6 years ago), I went out in 15 mph winds with gust to over 25. Sure, waves were kinda fierce, but having 6 years of C.G. experience - I had FUN...! (Been in really Bad Weather aboard ships in the Pacific in the mid 60's, where 60 foot waves and 135 mph winds were blowing! What's a little wind and water, anyhow?). Lol... The Coast Guard prepared me for becoming a Charter Boat Captain, a SCUBA Instructor, Large Engine Mechanic, etc.. Born and raised on the Gulf Coast, I still have "Water in my Veins"...!

In my opinion $3k+ for a kayak is only reasonable if you plan on tournament kayak fishing. I think this will start to set a cap for companies. I don’t think the prices will continue to rise or even stay at the premium $5k-6k we see some yaks selling for. It’s just not worth it to buy a $5k kayak to add a $1500 motor and $1k-$3k in fish finders for the average angler… I think companies will start to lower their prices or risk going out of business..
@thebeardedpaddler

2500 is a starting point for a good pedal drive fishing kayak. Hobie makes the Passport 10.5 and 12 for $2k but not a true fishing platform (you can still fish from) in $2500 you get Bite Fd, OT Sportsman series, even the Hobie Compass, and the Native Propel 10. Plenty of quality stuff out there. The every once in awhile few times a year kayak fisher may be better served in a paddle kayak with an anchor setup also. Lots of options

@@thebeardedpaddler I’m aware, I own a slayer max 12.5 that I got for 2600 and a hobie passport 10.5. What I meant is that for the past few years kayak prices have been going up and I think it’s about to stop at around $3k, some might offer more expensive setups but I think it’ll be more aimed toward the pro rather than the average weekend angler. Sure companies offer a more affordable kayak in their line up but often times they’re very basic. and for the $3k and above price tag it’s more reasonable and logical to buy a small Jon boat and have the ability to bring a buddy along.

Sold two high end SOT’s during the 2020 season that were 7 and 8 years old for what I paid for them and quickly upgraded for my wife and myself. We were lucky because we moved them quickly and very early in the season so we didn’t get caught up in the supply chain crunch. I think you’re spot on with your assessment but I have to ask, is there any point in this innovation race that will cause some consumers to say to themselves, “at $5-6K I might be better off buying a used bass boat?”
@thebeardedpaddler
@thebeardedpaddler 10 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching. It's important to know that the boat industry is doing the same thing. Not everyone needs a 5k kayak but the boat argument is not the beat at that price. Boats (even Jon boats) require a lot of maintenance (motor) and 60% of the cost is the motor. Many of the used boats in that price range will turn in to money pits. That being said, not everyone needs a Hobie Pro Angler. Innovation gives you more value and more features for the money you are spending. Things like access drill plates, more creative storage, seats, accessory mounting, and future rigging capabilities will be the near future in my opinion.

Far as style of kayaks , One style , fishing , honestly nothing is better for fishing overall , than the Old Town Autopilot 136. It has the perfect layout , perfect drive setup and everything , I do not see any other manufacturer coming out with something that is leaps and bounds above the quality and ability of that kayak to fish from. At 5 grand , its pretty much hit the mark on everything. I dock launch it on a trailer like a PWC and I never have to lift it , I fish the sound , it holds on spot lock in any wind or tide that I have been in. Its just stellar. I have not been in anything above 20 MPH , but 18 and lower , its great. If I had one complaint , at all , it would be for there to be a 50 lb or 55 lb thrust version versus only the 45 lb thrust. Outside of that , its perfect. Anything more capable and you have to spend 10's of thousands more on a boat.
@thebeardedpaddler

I'm glad you like it and it's a solid kayak. Since MotorGuide and Minn Kota both make a kayak trolling motor with spot lock the AP no longer is as unique as it once was when it was launched. Now you can put spot lock on the bow of most fishing kayaks for less $$ than an AP. The Autopilot needed more storage in my opinion and is the biggest reason why they people are moving to Nucanoe and Bonafide, and even Hobie

Also seeing new players in the market and more mid range boat options for new enthusiasts which is fantastic. Used market isn't that great in my area, but to be expected in WI when we really only get about 5months for an open water fishing season until the winter hits. Not sure prices will go down much. But you will see new models come out in the mid price point I think. I'm hoping the price increase is kept to a minimum (or $0) and we have already started to see that. Jackson went down on some of the prices and stayed the same on others. Hobie took a much lower increase and they are not charging more for the camo colors which is nice to see

@@thebeardedpaddler I agree.. the top end boat manufacturers like Hobie, Jackson and Bona-fide are in a tough spot. They don't want to devalue their lineup, but the mid range boats are offering options comparable to the top end boats, which is guaranteed to take more market share. On the retailer side of things , I think your a little off the mark. What is the definition of "grow in too"? I have several kayaks , all of which are used between my wife and friends and myself. Some are years old , others are just a year or two old. I do not think kayaks are like shoes , you never grow out of them if you buy them for certain reasons that others can not do. I primarily fish , she just lays out , so I have two pedal drives and a autopilot 136 , she has a jackson kraken 156 and a feel free molken and a mirage 360 pa14. When we plan to travel a lot in the water , she prefers the jackson kraken for its speed. I preferred the WD radar for its easier to pedal than the Propel 13 and it can go a little faster than the autopilot. If we plan to to a lot of stop and go but stay close to the docks and I plan on a heavy fishing day , which is most of the time what we do. I use the autopilot , and she uses the pa 14 360. I use the propel in ponds because of its sharper turn radius and in very shallow areas like less than a foot because with the drive up it paddles the best. The feel free molken is really the only kayak that we have sort of left behind out of 7 kayaks. I could make an argument , for an additional couple more kayaks for touring if we really wanted to go some distance and possibly camp around. I do not adhere to the whole buy a kayak , find something I like better and then sell one before I buy another and only keep one kayak. Too many differences between them.

You stating you've had boats for 30 years and call a sit on boat, a kayak is interesting. As a kayak is defined as a boat you sit in, not on. Finally why would you take it upon yourself to think you can speak for me by assuming I'm trying to sway anyone. My opinion on the subject is entirely mine and meant only to reflect my belief. If it sways you or anyone else, I'd be inclined to think one is not a free thinking person and perhaps should consider concentrating on their own inabilities to think for themselves. Not what another states as their opinion.

@@Bobbysheresomewhere Does one have to be "for something" to obtain knowledge about a subject? - No. Are you trying to insinuate you where "obtaining knowledge" by watching the video, then making a statement? Not asking any questions? Do you obtain knowledge by asking questions, or making statements? Is one only allowed to comment if they agree with the message? - No. I never said that. Stop trying to speak for me. Sound familiar? You stating you've had boats for 30 years and call a sit on boat, a kayak is interesting. As a kayak is defined as a boat you sit in, not on. - Not the complete definition, but ok. Why is me calling a "sit on boat" a kayak interesting? Please elaborate. Finally why would you take it upon yourself to think you can speak for me by assuming I'm trying to sway anyone. - You made a statement. Look in the mirror, you tried this with me. My opinion on the subject is entirely mine and meant only to reflect my belief. - True. Why even bring this up? If it sways you or anyone else, I'd be inclined to think one is not a free thinking person and perhaps should consider concentrating on their own inabilities to think for themselves. Not what another states as their opinion. - How else are we supposed to form opinions? Make informed decisions? If we don't learn from others, we'll never move forward. Learn from what others have experienced. Are you insinuating I'm not a "free thinking person"? I have an "inability" to think for myself? Or does this only apply to people that call "boats" "kayaks"? Both? Why did you not reply to thebeardedpaddler? What name what you approve for these "vessels" or "boats" to be called?

Really awesome points. I wanted the Jonny bass boat 100. I couldn't find one for 2yrs. They went up to $1300.00. Now they're everywhere for $1,300.00 with the Pod motor and beaver tail rudder. I have friends that have transferred from bass boats to amazing motorized 12ft, PDL drives. 😎 🛶 🎣
