As a firefighter this seems very interesting to me for things like going into burning buildings. Theoretically you could add a thermal sensor to restore your vision (you don't see anything while in a burning building) and relay important information directly to it or send a videofeed to others outside to assess the situation.

I would say revolutionary. Beside the field of view issue but all first generation technology has flaws and blunders, like the original IPhone which I would consider the first real capacitive touch screen smartphone. When it was released in 2007 it only ran on 2g when you were out in public basically rendering the internet 100% useless. It will improve over time, and something like this in the form of a pair of glasses and then contact lenses capable of this and VR will almost certainly replace smartphones one day another 10, 20 years from now, and eventually BCI's, but that's still a really really long time away.
@14supersonic8 жыл бұрын
+nicktheg00 All they need to do is figure out a way to project an image to a bent display without distortion, and not only would that fix the FOV issue, but this tech is going to be a sure fire revolution.

Yeah this is true. My 6 year old desktop still has processing speeds that are better than most high-end expensive modern rigs, and the desktop I bought at that time was mid-tier. It seems CPUs haven't been able to get much further past 4GHz, and it's a bit disappointing despite them releasing "new" CPUs all the time.

@meyes10985 жыл бұрын
@@liljbm1548 No, your cpu is not better than "most high-end expensive modern rigs", that's a complete lie. Doesn't even really matter what way you're looking at it. If you actually mean high-end, then you're talking overclock performance, then your 6yr old cpu is trash compared to even zen2 AMD cpus (which are garbage at overclocking to begin with), even though yours probably cost more than double that. Even if you compare say the i7-5930K which was one of the best gaming cpus of it's time and came out in 2014, with the recent AMD ryzen 9 3600, the ryzen is like 3 times cheaper, and performs like 10% better. Let's also not forget that cpu speed is NOT the end all in computing. IPS is arguably more important (not that important in gaming, but more important in compute-heavy workloads). TL;DR: it doesn't matter how you look at it, the modern cpus are leagues above "6 year old cpus". Mid tier cpus nowadays stomp high-enthusiast cpus of 6 years ago

I used Hololens today. It's impressive and I am difficult to impress. I have Oculus Gear which is amazing. Hololens feels just as good. It is a very polished professionally device although some improvements could be made to the lens and glasses. I can see this be useful immediately for many professionals, engineers, designers, doctors, artists, etc. Graphics are crisp like the video shows. Tracking is almost perfect. AR and VR really should not be thought of as battling to win and the other dies. They are two separate types of experiences that will both have place in the market. Each have there advantages depending on what you are looking to do. I can see AR replacing phone, television, and watch. But that will probably happen when they get the device down to the size of regular eyeglasses or contact lenses. Future is AR holograms and immersive VR experiences.

I am a developer working with this amazing piece of technology. We mainly work with Unity3D to create AR experiences so if you're familiar with the software, the learning process to dive into the world of the Hololens is relatively short. Nevertheless, it gets a bit trickier when you need to test stuff as you need to build and export your project each time, which quickly gets a bit annoying. But in general, Microsoft did a very good work making apps development for the Hololens not a complex process, that even newbies can get through. I'm very excited to see how this will slowly be the next standard.

Finally there are definitely less options for games and features compared to VR which have fully customizable worlds with tons of developers already working on it. It's amazing when you realize that we are living at the dawn of a new era for the human race. We take for granted the technology we have. Think about it. You have in your pocket (or on your head, if you'er reading this in the near future) a device that allows for you to instantaneously communicate with anyone on the planet telepathically. You have access to all human knowledge and history. You can capture moments of time and save them forever. You can listen to music when ever you feel like it, without have to buy tickets to a play. You can solve complex mathematical equations without even thinking. You can entertain yourself with artificially constructed universes and experiences. People in the 50s predicted that everyone would have a computer in their home by 2000, and they were right, but I don't think they ever could have imagined that just ten years later, everyone would have a computer in their pocket.

This to me is badass and definatly something for companies to continue working on. Where as VR feels like a gimmick more for gaming, at least for now. Don't see it going much further in terms of tech though, other than smaller headsets better res/higher fps etc. But AR feels like the future and if made compact enough could be put on regular glasses possibly even lenses.

HTC Vive and Hololens are great. Oculus failed as soon as Facebook bought them.

Sinoops I prefer a AR headset rather than a VR one. So for me, the Oculus Rift, the HTC Vive, the Samsung's one and even the Google cardbord are the same for me : useless ^^

MK73DS I don't think you should even be comparing them to choose a favorite because they are designed for completely different things.

New version launches at the end of this year but MS still hasn't decided to make it another dev kit or market it as consumer hardware.

I am really excited for this kind of tech to become more established as more and more people/ companies work on it. How was the interaction? also on most VR headsets it gets to be a bit shaky, was that the case in the Hololens?

I always liked the idea of Ms hololens. For gaming wise, not as great as vibe or occulus, but for it's potential application in design, working, and building, then that's pretty cool. Just gotta wait five more years for it to be the size of a normal pair of glasses then it's golden.

I don't know anything about this technology but I'm curious if they could render the images in a higher resolution using a GPU of some sort. It would be neat to have the GPu as the muscle and a battery pack to keep it working. I'll shut up now.

To me this is the most compelling vision for AR/VR in the future. I know that it is not the same thing as VR, but I am not sure that the masses will like being connected via a bunch of wires to a computer.

There should be a separate, optional to use remote for window navigation. Instead of relying on gestures, you just point at what you want with the cursor built into your vision and then "click" with the detached remote. That's how oculus works without the touch controllers. Never tried the vive but I'd wager it does too.
@FrankieHiltz8 жыл бұрын
One thing I always notice with AR stuff that the technology struggles with it's own spacial awareness. For example, say I'm playing a game that puts an animal on a surface in front me, once you start to move the camera around you can see it stuttering, Say I put an "X" on a table in real life, and an AR object is sitting on it. If you move your field of view, it'll drag a long with you really slightly, than kind of slingshot back onto that X. Like there's a very slight lag of the device knowing where something is in the real world as it tries to correct itself to your own movement. Not sure if that made sense.. But if it did, how does it handle that sort of thing? It's a really great concept, just as long as there isn't any of that sort of problem.

guys what if they do something like this but in lenses for glasses for people who need glasses to see, like you still see everything but you also see Web pages and such like the glasses still make you see without being blurred but you also see stuff

i so want a hololens, but i cannot afford one, and i really should wait for the consumer version, not the developer version, but i really want to have a browser sitting behind my teacher while i'm in class, so i can still read up on stuff as i listen and follow along in the education.
@pesoen8 жыл бұрын
this was not a question, just FYI.. it was a statement, so there is no yes answer for this.. but yeah, it will be allowed in school, i already asked my teacher they said as long as i follow along in the education, i can do whatever i want to, as long as i do not disturb others(so if i could wank without disturbing others, i could do that so long as i follow along like the rest, extreme example, but exaggeration helps understanding)

Honestly, Iron Man-esque holographs aren't coming that soon, but Holograms on glasses is great enough. I kind of saw this coming with Google Glass, but not this quickly.
