Is the MIG-50 Deservedly A Fan Favorite? || Electro Harmonix MIG-50 Review

The Sovtek MIG-50 has been a cult classic, but the new version made by Electro Harmonix has turned it into a fan favorite by people like Josh Scott from JHS and Dan from That Pedal Show. I wanted to know if this hype is justified, so I managed to get in one for a video and share my sounds and thoughts!

The Mig 50 IMO is the best 50 watt tube amp under $1000 out there! I've owned many amps and when considering an amp to use with pedals (and I luv pedals) the Mig 50 is among the best there is! I've owned three and my latest is the newer version and it is even better than the older ones in so many ways!

I stood in front of the amp and its matching 212 cab, had Volume I almost full up, and the head started vibrating right off the cab as I played some riffs - input side! Surprised that EHX didn't stress-test the head with their own cab, or if they did, offer a solution! ;p(

It's an old Russian amp. Duct tape is the solution.

Which one do you prefer? MIG-50 or Marshall Studio JTM?

I liked the Studio JTM better because it's more controllable. They're somewhar similar, but the MIG-50 gets either brighter or woofier and it's very loud. But if you want more drive from the amp, the MIG-50 has more to offer than the Studio JTM.

@@StevenAnthonyGuitar I'm actually looking for a better pedal platform. Warm, cleaner headroom at volumes loud enough to play with a drummer who hits rather hard. Studio JTM seems better to me. Thank you for your reply. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to your next video.

The Mig is more raw vintage tone and if yer old school it will rock yer world better than the newer stuff. It's a pedal platform, that's what brings it alive!@@viccolfari8341

@@viccolfari8341 Hi, I'm hesitating too between the mig and the studio JTM, which one did you finally choose ? The studio seem to be more manageable at house volume but I fear that it will lack some power at loud band level ( I play in a doom band)

An effects loop is useless with an amp like that, because most of the drive would still happen after the loop as it's not an amp that drives in the preamp stage, but at the output.

Is this a mark 2 mig 50?

I haven't seen any designation about being mark whatever. It's their most recent reissue with the black plastic toggle switches for power and standby.

Not sure if they named them "mark I, mark II" but to discern a difference to the newer made ones, the older have metal switches and says "50 watt amplifier". The more recent ones have plastic switches and says "new york city" instead. As far as I know they are the same but EHX went cheaper on some components like the switches, to keep it as affordable as possible.

@@particlesandpixels yet Marshall make the Studio-series in the U.K. and has decent switches. I'm no amp tech, but from what I feel from the outside these Marshalls feel more sturdy and are almost the same price, at least here in Europe.
