Is the Netflix Death Note Movie Supposed to be a Comedy? | Death Note (2017) Movie Cringe Reaction!

In this video we are reviewing the Death Note Movie (2017) Netflix Adaptation. Wow so that happened. We really didn't know what to expect going into this movie, our Patrons told us to prepare ourselves and we didn't know why. What a suprise it was to see that this movie did not follow the story at all! This movie was so bad at one point we wrote "Light Turner, Mia, and Ryuk" in our own Death Note! 😂 A high school student discovers a supernatural notebook that has deadly powers. He can kill anyone he wishes simply by inscribing their name within its pages. Intoxicated with his new power, he begins to eliminate those he deems unworthy of life.

I agree with you, but in part that even makes me more angry, because if you look at the length of the film, the character appears in very few scenes and when he does, like they said in the video, the character is totally different from the one we love in the anime. Yes, Willien Defoe as Ryuk is a great idea, but I just wish this was a better Ryuk so he could play him

If you want to watch Death Note. Go watch the Anime. You're never going to have any fun watching this movie if you can't accept that this is an adaptation of the series. Why do you think this is set in America? Cuz it's trying to be it's own thing exclusive from the Anime. Yea but the deaths are also a huge problem with the story. Light says in the anime/manga that the best thing about the Death Note is that they die of heart attacks if you don't specify the cause of death after writing a name. That's how ppl know someone is out there exacting judgement, that's how they know Kira exists. The only time Light would kill ppl without a heart attack in the anime/manga was when he didn't want to be tied to the death or when he was testing the Death Note. So the little montage of Light killing random criminals in various different ways in this movie doesn't make sense. Yes he's killing criminals, which is the ultimate goal, but by doing it in various different ways instead of heart attacks, it's not letting the world know that he's the one killing them.

The main things I give this movie kudos for. 1) Dafoe as Ryuk. Perfect casting. 2) L. The actor playing him actually does a really good job portraying L's mannerisms, and he apparently is a fan of the manga and did his research. 3) The "just as planned" segment at the end, as over the top as it was, gave me some serious vibes from the manga. That's the kind of Light we needed in this movie, and it was nice seeing a glimpse of that at the end. But as an overall adaptation, yeah it's not very good.

I disagree strongly on number 2. That was the one thing I hated most about this movie. This version of L was a blubbering emotional baby. Aside from how L sits in a chair, he had none of L's personality. L, in the anime, was calm, methodical, calculating and almost cold. He was very dispassionate when making deductions. Almost like a computer solving long division, he never let his emotions get away from him(Aside from the one time he was told Shinigami were real). This version of L was the exact opposite. He was whiney, angry, upset, and fearful. This movie version was an L that had little to no control over his emotions and lent himself to confrontational outbursts of emotion and manic behavior. I didn't see someone making clever chess moves 3 steps ahead of Light Yagami. I saw someone who looked like it was his first time being a detective and falls apart when things don't fit. Either this actor did very little research for the role or he was forced to act like this by a director who, clearly, only watched the trailer for Death Note anime and thought he knew how the story was from that. Because this movie had very little nuance and subtlety that the anime had. People liked Death Note because of the clever chess game between L and Light. Neither Light nor L were in any way brilliant in this abbreviated story of Death Note. They would have done better making it a netflix seasonal show and made a real effort to establish character and story. Instead they tried to make a very brain dead and flashy movie hoping to rope idiot audiences in with name recognition and special effects. Didn't work out too well for them. Check out any trailer for this movie and review site. All ratio'd and in the negative.

They missed the point of an adaptation with that one lolll.. You can change a few events if you want so the people who saw the source material can have a few surprises.. However, you shouldn't change characters personalities and rules set in the original material since most people have expectations regarding this kind of thing and changing them is just a lazy way to tell yourself you "subverted" them.. Subverting expectations through new events while staying true to the source material is what they should strive toward.. However this requires actual writing / directing skills..

I haven't watched this live action myself, however friends of mine did and ... encouraged me not to, using Light Yagami's meeting Ryuk scene as the one and only scene I needed to prove why I shouldn't. It worked. I've also heard from others if you treat it as a farce you fare better. Similarly, if you come at the live action Fullmetal Alchemist from the thought that it is a fan movie with a certain budget, it makes great sense.

Look, for me any adaptation, whether of an anime, a book or a comic, does not have to be 100% exact to the original for it to work. What's more, on many occasions it is more than necessary that there be changes in history when translated from one medium to another. For me the most important thing will always be that the essence of the story is maintained, what makes it unique and what are the intentions of its creator are brought to the screen. Death Note is a psychological drama, whose main axis is the game of cat and mouse between Kira and L (later Nier), it is a battle between two brilliant minds and between two colliding philosophies, when you eliminate that, you eliminate what makes unique the anime. You can change the country, change the name of all the characters or even the rules of the book, but when you change the story so that the characters are absolute idiots, and the battle of wits becomes a charade between two impulsive assholes who the movie wants to pass as geniuses, your adaptation is worth shit

This! I never want my adaptation to follow its source material scene to scene or word to word. Because then there’s nothing new to add! That’s why I love Alice In Borderland and Sweet Home (both are Netflix series based on comics, the former is based on a manga and the latter on a manhwa.) In AIB, they include the main characters in more scenes then they had in the manga and in Sweet Home they change the ending and leave us on a cliffhanger which is exciting because now, even though I’ve read the webtoon, I don’t know what’s coming next! Like this is how you do a live action adaptation. Netflix, please learn from Netflix.

the only reason i like this movie (and movies like it) is how much content movie review youtubers got from this. the cosmonaut variety hour review on this movie is hilarious. also important remember all the actors did a fine job i think the real people at fault are the writers/director

I was fortunate enough to be able to watch this without having seen anything of the original manga or show and knowing almost nothing about it. Honestly while it wasn't the best movie I've ever seen it also wasn't that bad and I actually enjoyed it for the most part, aside from certain aspects (I didn't really like the main character). I thought Willem Dafoe was really cool in this. I find, as with most death note fans, most of the criticisms stem from comparing this to the original rather than viewing it as its own thing. That's why this movie was a huge mistake, you can't take something with a huge passionate following and change it so drastically expecting them to like it.

The problem is a passive protagonist. This is when the things happen to the protagonist, rather than the protagonist driving the plot. In the anime, Light is driving the plot. It is Light's choice to write in the death note, to kill, to try and change the world. In this movies Light is being told to write in the book, to kill, and he doesn't have a defined reason to do so much beyond being told to do so. Passive protagonists just don't make interesting characters, or stories.

This was the first Death Note I ever saw. My reaction: "I liked it." Then I saw the anime. My reaction: "This might be one of my top favorite anime." I watch Anthony and Kacee's reaction to the Netflix adaptation. My reaction: "I think I still like it, but...fuuuuuck." In summary, I think this was Dragon Ball Evolution all over again.

There's youtube channels that recreate some iconic anime scenes from a lot of series in live action, they don't have half of the budget or resources that this studios have and they make such a good job with the adaptation, those videos they make are proof that anime adaptations to live action can be made but these studios just don't undestand how to do it.
