The fact that there are no obvious recovery points on a vehicle that's supposedly on off road vehicle, makes me think off roading was an after thought for this redesign. Between the design decisions made for the Tundra and Sequoia, I'm a little concerned about the Tacoma and 4runner redesigns

Yea I can see that as well, it looks like they’re going for a more mass market approach to “off-roading”, I.e. body styling that makes non-wheelers think you off-road when you actually don’t. This thing looks like a giant brick, the clearance looks abysmal.

Confidence is 9/10ths of the law, so if you put tow hooks on the multi verse will cause you to get stuck. Meanwhile, vehicles without tow hooks get stuck far less often. It’s all in the confidence. Trust toyota. I mean, the Camry doesn’t have tow hooks either and it doesn’t get stuck nearly as often as Wranglers do despite them having recovery points. Some would argue that the better the recovery point the more likely you are to get stuck. Hence confidence is everything…

Love your videos. Two questions: 1. Given the Land Cruser is discontinued, which other Toyota SUV will be the new king of offroading? 2. Instead building luxury SUVs with offroad capabilities , why manufacturers build a true offroader with tech and some necessary luxury features? For example a Suzuki Samurai with Bronco Raptor power and suspension? Approach and departure angles above 30 degrees, 10" of clearance, etc, etc? Luxury like Recaro A/C and heated seats but with marine grade floor finish?

@@CHMernerner But no one is selling true off-road capability for less. That's just the reality of the car market. Just being honest but... No company could sell a Samurai in 2022 in the US market for profit. It's why they didn't even try with the new Jimny. The cost to meet regulations is far too high these days to justify a very low volume vehicle in the US. Most people will just tack on 12 more months to their loan and get a Wrangler or Bronco.

I preferred a 3rd Gen 4runner or 1st Gen Tundra/ Sequoia as redesign in 2023-2025 with better Front Suspension LBJ design and V8 for more power and updated technology along with a Swing out tire instead of under carriage tire for offroad clearance. For TRUE TRD off road purposes package. Because The body would be a lot slimmer for offroad trails. These New Tundras, 4runners, Sequoias are too wide and big for off road trail purposes besides to Tacoma. It amazes me how people get excited over FOX suspension. Unless you live in a dry(non-humid) and no road salt, these FOX, KINGS, ICONS, Rad Flo all rust pretty severely after 3-4years. Also, higher maintenance involved. These great suspension systems are for high speed off-road travel, not slow off-roading and daily driving comfort. People are such suckers over fancy race suspension and don't actually understand its purpose. TFL and other reviewers put to much into the name appeal and don't understand how things work. This guy just talks about parts but doesn't know jack of what he's talking about. He's excited that they used the FWP tire that is a tuned down version, weak sidewall and then says it needs a lift for off-road. Good lord man, a lift is nice but it doesn't allow for bigger tires! OFFSET and Fender space does. By the way the Zr you reviewed is garbage. The frame will rust out and it has low grade parts. In your video, look at the rear frame and you'll see bubbles under the frame. That is from the frame being dipped in a wax to "protect" it from rust. NOPE, it does not, what will happen is that thin layer will come off and moisture will be captured in those nice little bubble. GM has been doing this for many years. It's a cheap way to make the frame look really nice for the first two years.

The fuel economy didn’t change at all once we loaded it, drawers, fridge, water tank under the frame, roof rack and roof top tent. We run 33 inch tires and two inch suspension kit for the weight and our mpg on went to 15.8 mpg instead of 16.9 average speed 50 mph. On a long highway run we are doing 18.7 and that’s good for all the weight. They look really good compacted to these new trucks and I don’t have to worry about anything breaking.
