Best truck feature ever, if the rear window is removable like it is on the Avalanche. We've used our mid-gate to haul long boards and oversized furniture. We've also used it to create an air-conditioned space for dogs who want to endure the ride in the relative safety of a dark den.

This video was my life for 14 years. I went from a 2000 GMC longbed extended cab pickup to a 2003 Avalanche with the midgate. I had the GMC for 3 years and kept the Avalanche for 14 years until 2017. The Avalanche did it all and was easier to park and maneuver. We had three small boys during this time as well and could easily fit all three car seats across the rear bench in the Avy. We took this truck everywhere and road tripped it for vacations easily hauling strollers and pack and plays and exersaucers in the secure and dry bed along with luggage and anything else we needed to drag to the beach. With the midgate we hauled couches and drywall and sheets of plywood, pvc pipe, red oak hardwood floors you name it. I could pop out the window and lay 12 to 16 foot pieces of molding from the dash all the way back through the open window space onto the hard tonneau cover and strap it all down. Until we got a Tahoe for the driveway my wife preferred the Avalanche to our sedan and would take it everywhere. I don't have the same needs today but Avalanches with a midgate are an awesome choice for young families who do DIY projects around the house.

The mid gate makes the truck a fantastic car camping rig. With the tonneau cover on and the mid gate open, you can have a climate controlled sleeping area that is completely sealed off and weather proof. Good thing the Chevy has a massive battery.
@is6566
@is6566 15 күн бұрын
I was thinking the same. If Diamondback makes a hard aluminum tonneau cover for it then the bed will be truly weatherproof. You can even insulate it. Now it just needs a range extender generator and I will be interested.

Unless you do a lot of customization you will never have a real weather proof rig that has a tailgate. Look elsewhere on KZbin for all the videos on people living in their pickups. First really cold snow and wind event you’ll see the lengths they go thru. I know as I tried sleeping in my pickup in the 90’s during the work week at my job site. Work ok until you get a driving rain or driving snow storm

@ just sayin… you get dry snow blowing at 20-30 mph you’ll be covered in snow, at least by the tail gate will be. I’ve owned a bunch of trucks with caps over the years and a few suburban/tahoes, and there is no comparison between how a SUV seals up versus a truck bed cap or cover. And it’s all because of the tail gate.

Midgate should include a barrier mechanism to prevent the bed load slamming into the backs of the seats under heavy braking or a collision. The split midgate design on the Avalanche tended to leak. I hope GM fixed that leak.

For a new vehicle, GM really should have added those couple of inches in the bed to allow the tailgate flap to lift and hold 8' long items. The midgate seems like a good idea for the rare times of needing more than an 8 foot bed but that's a lot of extra work and steps just for some plywood and insulation, not to mention losing 3 seats. From personal experience, using the MultiPro/Flex tailgate for hauling plywood is great with a standard 6' 7" bed without any extra work besides lifting the flap.

I can see a few issues with the midgate: 1) with allmof the movable pieces, the wether gaskets are going to wear andnits going to leak. 2) it adds a lot of complexity 3) it's a multistep process to open the midgate. 4) opening the midgate opens the back of the cab up to the elements. Not great in bad weather. 4) it has a flip up lip on the tailgate, but the flip up doesnt extend the bed to 8 feet. Why not design the tailgate to extend to the needed 8 feet? It will be fine for occasional use, but not something a GC will wNt to be using on a daily basis.

Chevy if you are reading TFL comments, we need a Work Truck with a midgate! My ideal of this truck is cloth seats, no carpet floor, no glass roof, midgate, pro tailgate, no super cruise, any battery that's cheap! I would first thing go get a Camper Shell and then you have 8ft covered on demand cargo space/camping! For the few times you need an open air bed for something bigger you have it, and you have optional back seat or storage.

The midgate in my Avalanche is the best. When they designed it, they hid a sort of roll bar for stability and it rides better than a suburban. I like that I can load it up at one store and still make a quick stop at another without drawing attention to the load, it's sorta hidden. The improvement of a 60/40 split in the midgate is also a nice add. You can add a 3rd rider if the load is just boards, surf, furniture or whatever. Yeah it's not intended for contractor use, it's a bit cumbersome but when you get use to the steps to configure, it absolutely rocks for the homeowner that benefits from the occasional need. I still own a 2003 and I love it.

Appreciate the video. I think the more popular one will be the LT Extended Range. No mid gate, no glass roof. Did not need or want either. I had two Avalanches and never used the mid gate. Glass roof make the vehicle too hot in the summer. For $75K MSRP and qualifies for the $7,500 tax credit that is the deal. That will be the one that sells. Most people who drive a 1/2 ton truck don't need a mid gate for hauling larger supplies. If they are hauling larger serious stuff, they buy a 3/4 ton truck or larger. This is not who the truck is marketing to. The bed is large enough for the 1/2 ton buyer needs, the weekend warrior. Purchased mine for $66K and with the tax credit puts it at $59K. Pretty good deal for an EV truck with 408 miles range. Love it thanks for all you do in your videos. Sharing my thoughts as the buyer of the LT.

I see a lot of people mentioning the Avalanche. Dont forget there was also an Escalade EXT that was the Cadillac version of the Avalanche. The only major difference was that the material on the sail pillars was different and didn't fade like the Avalanche. I had the Platinum trim. Nice truck, but terrible on gas, and it took premium grade. Mid gate was useful for the short bed and not waterproof even with the hard 3 section tonneau.

I opted for the f150 lightning pro long rage for one big reason. I could put a normal ladder/pipe reck on it. There isn't a full length rack for the Silverado EV. The lightning can use anything that the normal f150 can. That was the dealbreaker for me.... that and car play though the WT trim does have CarPlay.... just not the more expensive ones.

The Silverado EV should have gotten the Avalanche name plate. The mid gate design is very nice though. It would be nice to see GM put in all of their crew cab trucks. If this truck was more around 60k it would be a game changer. That price tag really makes it unobtainium for most people. Even 60k feels like mostly unobtainium at that price as well. The mid gate would be huge in a Colorado and Canyon though.

16:14 all the more evidence that this is a gimmick. So let’s break this out a bit…. An $84k truck that to haul plywood needs a midgate. Using the mid gate you’ll want a $1000+ hard tonneau to not be an incredibly loud cab and maybe your heater kept up but your range has to be affected to heat an additional 65+ cubic feet of uninsulated volume. And you have, effectively, a loud, drafty, regular cab pickup. And you could buy a relatively plush quiet, warm, 8ft regular cab with a locking cap or hard tonneau cover for 1/2 the price. Or buy a Lightning XLT or Flash for 24 to 35 percent less and use a piece or two of rope occasionally

Things I don’t like about the midgate: 1) the window is manually removed and could get dropped or cracked - I don’t understand why they didn’t make it recess inside the gate as a power window, 2) all the extra hinges and flaps create recesses for dirt/rocks if the bed is ever used to carry that stuff, 3) who cares about closing the tailgate when a 4x8 sheet lies on the gate like any other truck and you can secure it with a couple of tie downs? 4) you have to drive with the cab open which sucks in the winter. This was a lot of expense for very little benefit.
@JDCheng

They didn't make it recess into the midgate because it's a split-folding midgate. You would need two glass pieces and a middle channel to have that option - and sealing between the glass pieces would be really hard.

I really don’t see the value with a midgate unless you have something really unique you’re hauling. My short bed Silverado can easily haul 8’ and 10’ lumber. 12’ is doable if properly strapped. Then there’s the issue of security and weather with the midgate down if leaving the vehicle unattended. Not sure about noise level. But it’ll probably work for some people.

I don't like the mid gate for carrying anything other than foam. You need to think about the safety aspect of this bad idea. If you truly loaded this like a truck and had it crammed to the max with sheets of 3/4" plywood and slammed on the breaks, or worse, hit something what would happen to the humans up front. Without a fold up barrier wall this is dangerous. I would really like to see you use your new Maverick and show that truck loaded up with sheets of plywood and see what that could carry in the real world. Nothing against the Silverado EV, I just think the mid gate is not a real truck feature.

Honestly.......if the mid-gate was valued by customers as more than a party trick wouldn't it have taken off back in the Avalanche days? It launched at ~50k/yr, peaked at 90k/yr, and finally died in 2013 with only 16k/yr after a 13yr run. It's not like GM didn't give it a chance. People don't want messy bed items in the cabin. I'd rather use a bed extender and tie the load down. My biggest concern with mid-gate is road noise, since I wouldn't be using it 99% of the time. You guys should do noise tests at highway speed when the gate is up and compare that with another truck EV.....Lightning, CT, Rivian, etc. Does the mid gate come with a noise penalty or not?

You just need 3/8 in plywood and second you could’ve used the OSB that’s also orient strainer board the 7/16 would’ve worked or a quarter inch for the walls and you put a nice stain on it. It works out perfect for a workshop, but 3/8 flower was good. 84K and comes with premium depreciation. Someone will get a deal on it when theses are 3 years old.

Easier pill to swallow when the gov’t/taxpayers cover the first $15k of depreciation.

@Cloud30000 When compared to the $300 billion to $430 billions dollars tax payers are paying to cap all the abandoned, leaking oil wells throughout the country, I think that's a fantastic bargain that tax payers are getting. How many EV trucks can that many billions cover?

So a functional, practical feature that makes it easier (or at least gives you more options) to get work done. Put it on the base, working man trim? Nah, label it a luxury feature and only put it on higher trims. GM, you're really scummy sometimes.

The pricing is DEAD accurate by you guys. GM want to sell it? Get price down 15K and it will sell. It is roughly 15K overpriced for its trim level.

Mid-gates are dumb, nobody uses them, they unnecessarily complicate and raise the price of the vehicle. Every mid-gate vehicle has failed. It SOUNDS like a great and useful idea. In practice it is a true PITA and gets the inside of the truck dirty. If you haul enough 8' stuff to make it worthwhile, you buy an 8' bed. If you don't haul 8' stuff that often, you really don't need it.

I see this as being incredibly useful. It’s a really good compromise between an SUV and a pick-up. Looking forward to seeing the Trail Boss… 😁

I mean the avalanche was before your KZbin channel but come on really? This truck is simply an electric avalanche. Why are you acting like this is a new idea?
