so far, after watching a few videos, i’ve decided that the thing i like most about the camera is that it exists. this one and the Pentax 17 existing is a good thing for film photography. otherwise, imma go ahead and embrace not feeling an ounce of gear acquisition system.

It's not as if there wasn't a Leica film camera prior to the new M6, the MP has been around for 2 or 3 years now. But not much use to the younger generations driving the film revival because of the prohibitive cost.

@@chrisfetto9400 Leica wouldn’t have released a new reissue of their old film camera if they did not believe in the resurgence of film. They did their research, it’s on the rise. Leica very well know that their products are expensive, which just strengthens the fact that film is on the rise if they think such an expensive camera is still going to do well and bring in profit.

@chris_jorge I noticed that people who can't afford them like to denigrate Leica users so they can feel better about themselves. Also in my experience Leica users shoot a lot more than others. For example I had a M6 and then a M3,I shot about 500 rolls with them. When I felt I don't have the time anymore and the willingness to spend that much on film, I sold them. I never babied my cameras

Just want to add that they removed the best and most unusual feature of the original version of this camera, that is the hot shoe flash mount on the bottom of the camera. This resulted in your subjects having the shadow slightly above them which is pretty rare, funny and amazing in my opinion. You can see this in Stephen Shore's American Surfaces photos, which are shot with it.

The best part of this video's comments are the same as the best parts about the Pentax 17 videos - a bunch of people who have no intention buying either one, even if it was half the price and then whining non-stop about the price. Or the people who don't realize the real cost of old film cameras (I love it when someone says "my film camera works great - except the light leaks, sticking shutter, in-op meter, etc - and they ignore getting it fixed due to cost and difficulty finding a competent repair shop.) So to all the people groaning and moaning - we get it. You don't have/want to spend the money. Move along.

I have an original B35 (the cheap version of the Rollei 35) and everything you all hate about this camera was there in the originals. And, just like you with this one, I love shooting with it anyway. The autofocus and the fact that the lens is not collapsable is what sold me (collapsing the lens on my B35 destroys whatever the current frame is, and I always forget that).

I hope this venture succeeds. There hasn’t been a new roll film camera introduced in decades, yet film photography remains alive and well. There’s a limit to the ability to have vintage cameras repaired, and the prices of desirable used film cameras has continued to rise. I would love to see a company resurrect the Mamiya 7, which now sells for twice as much as it did a few years ago. Despite its hefty price, this new Rollei looks like it’s off to a good start. The original one was beautiful but plagued by shutter failures. And Rollei cameras were never cheap. So I say “huzzah!” to this new arrival.

Ultimately, I enjoy the slightly jankiness of old cameras and to have those quirks but with modern functionality of LIDAR, I'm over the moon the shots come out great. Can't wait for mine to come in the mail! Maybe I'll have a different opinion once I put my hands on it, but to me $800 seems very reasonable for this. Brand new with a warranty, new technology, compact packaging. Of course it won't be perfect, and it won't have every feature every made, especially not for $800. Half the hyped up point and shoots sell for more than half of this camera, and it's a crap shoot how long they'll last you. To tie this into the automotive theme this channel also has, photography die-hards are just like automotive die-hards that want new cars with manual transmissions. The reason manuals are dying is because nobody buys them. When manufacturers make a new manual and only a fraction of automotive enthusiasts buy them because the rest say things like, "I can get a better deal on a used car", or whatever other excuse they come up with. Then they act dumbfounded and complain when none of the manufacturers are willing to continue making manual transmission vehicles.

So in my mind the price is a no issue. All the other points are valid. The V2.0 should have a better advance lever and a more quiet AF motor, and other improvements. Actually don’t be so quick to call this camera “dependable”. Other brand back in the day had decades of research and develooment that went into making cameras that had all the quirks sorted out and that functioned day after day for years. These cameras have been reviewed over the years and are a testament of time and of how reliable they are. The Rollei 35 AF isn’t just a new camera, but it’s the first 35mm camera that Mint has decided to make. That means there really isn’t any real world reliability tests yet that show it is more dependable than film cameras that have already been working for 20+ years. It is crucial that we support these cameras by telling companys how they can improve, if build quality sucks, they need to fix that, if the shutter advance sucks (i’ve heard this from 4 separate reviewers now), Mint needs to know! Either wise these cameras might just be hot piles of trash in the future lol

The Rollei 35, as well as the new AF version, is a classic 35 mm film camera, but this does not automatically make it a 'full frame' camera in today's sense. Today, the term 'full frame' is used mainly for digital cameras whose sensor has the same size as a 35 mm film negative. Since the Rollei 35 is an analogue camera, it doesn't technically fall into this category, even though it uses the same type of film. I was lucky enough to use the Rollei 35 when it first came out, as my father owned one at the time. It was a really great compact camera for 35mm film, but the use of the term 'full frame' in relation to this camera leads to confusion. It's important to note the difference between analogue and digital terminology.

Framing this as an "investment" in the company makes sense, but I don't see it being successful. Anyone serious enough about film photography to spend $800 on a camera is not going to buy this, and anyone who wants to get into film photography but is nervous about buying decades-old second-hand cameras is not going to spend $800. Kinda wish I waited for v.2. Received my 35AF this week. Build quality is not where it should be - pick up spool is wonky and hard to attach the film to, sprockets to advance film are pretty small and plastic - probably a failure point. Haven’t shot a roll yet but wondering if the film I’ve loaded in the camera will get light leaks as the back doesn’t seem to close well. And the OLED info screen next to the shutter button is only showing a rotating set of spokes ona wheel instead of the expected info. I’m going some of these ‘quirks’ will work themselves out but the sprocket issue concerns me (poor material choice). Just my .02 cents.

Cameras built in the 60s that you can grab for 30 bucks don't have that many problems. And yes, I have fixed sticky shutters and dirty lenses. This thing competes with fully refurbished high-end medium format cameras, and there's plenty of those because guess what? They were not made of cheap plastic and dependent on Chinese electronics.

I struggle to find a want with this camera and it's mainly due to the price. I love it for what it is but compared to other cameras at that price point, I don't think that the AF is enough to convince me otherwise.

i don't understand why such AF-Systems aren't more common. The Hexar AF already had it, it's fast, reliable and even works in complete darkness but there just aren't many cameras like those. I don't understand why.

The MInt/Rollei 35AF has been extensively reviewed for points both good and bad. Most reviews seem to hit the same points and issues. The one thing not really addressed is the quality of the lens. A few more carefully done examinations indicate that the lens is fairly soft at wider apertures, and one commentator with two videos shows that there is some reason to worry about excessive lens flare, which would be even more concerning, as there is no provision to install a lens shade. Stripped of its dubious/false associations with the former Rollei cameras, this seems to be a conventional, middle class point-n-shoot camera with nothing extra, apart from the ability to manually override shutter speeds and apertures, compared to others which allow program only (no manual control) or aperture selection only. With all that, the economics of the camera are that you can buy two or three P-n-S cameras from the past for the same price, each with nearly the same control flexibility and with better optics. Looking at the video, you see that they evaluated the imaging of the camera with 4x6 inch drugstore-type prints. Perhaps that's all they think the camera cab do, in which case it is doomed to economically fail. The big negative I don't see commented on enough is the viewfinder, which looks to be as bad as an Oly XA, which is to say, awful.

I like Pentax 17 but this one seems to have a lot of faults that should not be there at this price. Simpler design choices could have lead to much better product. Rollie 35 was a totally different product. They could have modeled this on a contax T or a yachica to make design simpler and better and people would have liked it much better and would have made for a more solid product. If a camera is this fiddle new how likely it is to survive another 5-10 years

850€ (aka 900 US$) ?!? Come on. With all respect to Rollei....that s crazy. I own a classic Rollei 35. Love it, no doubt. But only the AF is not worth such a pricetag. For that money....I would choose a some used camera at any time.

No analog camera, old or new, is worth that much money. The fact that they added AF to that camera is just to take that huge money from young photographers, and the look of the photos produced by that camera is quite ordinary and normal like the old Canon camera from 1987 which also has AF and which costs 10 dollars! The problem is that these companies mislead young and naive photographers, okay not only young but also old photographers who are naive ,with their advertisements, no one should fall for their tricks!

It's a big (and expensive) risk to develop new analog cameras nowadays.. just like the pentax too they have higher costs for new development and production without any guarantee of success.. just like will said it's not perfect but an investment in the brand and the market and a step in the direction of more, better new cameras

@@voyagersquaremuzikathe original Rollei in 1969 cost 219$ with inflation that would be $1,878.48 in todays money. What tricks are you talking about? We should be commending company’s that invest money and time to produce new film cameras at great cost, especially small independents rather than moaning and slating them … “not like the old days…. Can get a vintage for half the price, they are tricking us“blah blah blah ….simple just don’t buy it.

Used camera w/ what warranty tho? A lot of old cameras are gone once it breaks unless you can find a donor camera. At least w/ the 35AF, it has a 2 year warranty and parts will be readily available. Premium compact P&S are around this price range if not more, so with the new tooling, R&D, manufacturing costs etc $800 is a fair price imo. Of course, I wish it was cheaper as well
@christianonphotography

@@thisistimmy warranty is actually not a criteria for me. I shoot film for years now and I never bought a new one (due to there was no "new" cameras on the market except Leica) But I m happy to say that none of my analog cameras broke so far.
