Just yesterday I picked up a used D3100 and a 70-300mm lens for about $150. Nice deal! It is my first foray into DSLR shooting. I have two Nikon bridge cameras that have taken incredible photos (P510 and P950) so this is a completely new deal for me. I took a few shots that really sucked so I came on here looking for pointers. Your video made me happy I got such a good unit at a really good price. Thanks!

I've had my D3100 since 2013. Over 10 years of constant shooting, and taking it wherever I go, it is still my go to camera. Lately I have been taking my photography a little more seriously, and I still don't have any intention on upgrading my camera, only my lenses. Sure the sensor is smaller than what is out today, but considering how intimately I know this camera, I am able to make it work for exactly what I need to do.

I just bought one of these on ebay today. Red one with both VR kit lenses and a Lowepro bag for only $340. For that, this is not a good camera, but an AMAZING one. I got it for my 14 year old stepdaughter for her Photography 2 class. The red should appeal to her; more fashionable than basic black. 14 MP is enough to make a nice 8x10, which is the biggest she'll likely make. A better camera with a full frame sensor and higher resolution would be wasted on her, as they are bigger and heavier; she would leave it at home all the time. Thanks for the nice real-world review.

The Nikon D3100 is a 14.2-megapixel DX format DSLR Nikon F-mount camera announced by Nikon on August 19, 2010. It replaced the D3000 as Nikon's entry level DSLR. It introduced Nikon's new EXPEED 2 image processor and was the first Nikon DSLR featuring full high-definition video recording with full-time autofocus and H.264 compression, instead of Motion JPEG compression. It was also the first Nikon DSLR to provide high-definition video recording at more than one frame rate.

Agreed the D3100 is a good camera, my first Nikon when it first came out. Gave my D3100 along with 18-55 and the 55-200mm lens to my dad yrs ago. Ended up buying a couple more after that because the price was so cheap so we could convert one to an infrared camera, wife had me cut the glass filter and she took the camera apart on the kitchen table and converted it, She still uses it. I found I can use old manual non AI lenses which are cheap on the D3100 without hurting the camera like they would on newer cameras with motors, takes some messing around with but cool shooting an old 50mm 1.4 that I paid maybe 40 bucks for on the D3100...okay I don't do that much but pretty cool...you got me wanting to try the video out with the old lens now. For still photography the D3100 is fine. For video- well its only any good if you like listening to the very loud sound of the lens autofocus mechanism in all your videos. Of course, you could focis manually, but its tricky with this camera. And, of course, there is no socket for an external microphone. For a camera of this age, get a D5100 which does have the external microphone socket plus an articulating screen.

@BoostLeekdMedia3 жыл бұрын
there are several factors to why your images are turning out the way they are in manual mode. if you're photographing during the day, with lots of light, you will need to photography at a higher shutter speed. The higher the shutter speed, the faster the camera will be able to capture an image (especially if the subject/object is moving at a very fast pace). That's just one of the factors. You will have to understand how Shutter Speed, Aperture, and ISO works together to get the settings you want. There are 'cheat sheets' on how each of those settings work, you can google "camera settings cheat sheet' on the internet and you can see that there are many great examples of how Shutter Speed, Aperture, and ISO all work together to get the image you want. I hope this helps!

With that said is there any point on upgrading? Thank you.
@BoostLeekdMedia4 жыл бұрын
You could upgrade. I guess it just really depends what you're photographing. The D7500 is an incredible camera. I like that the D7500 does give you the 1/8000 max shutter speed and how button layout on the D7500 is much better for making faster camera adjustments too. At the end of the day, just weigh in the pros and cons to decide if you want to upgrade. Nikon DSLRs are ending but Nikon is still continuing to make, I think, 2 more F-mount lenses too. Mirrorless is definitely the next road they're going too. I hope this helps!

I've had this camera for about 8 years and am currently thinking of upgrading soon. Although I have achieved some good photos from it I do find the autofocus quite slow and some photos not that sharp, but maybe thats me or the lens that I use. Would you recommend investing in a new camera or is it worth trying a better lens? I take mainly wildlife and landscape photos. Thanks.

If you're doing more wildlife (and landscape), definitely upgrade. While the D3100 is excellent for slow moving subjects, it struggles a lot with fast moving subjects. I would still keep the D3100 as a backup but if you want a camera that has a better autofocusing system for wildlife, I would highly recommend looking at the D7x00 series. I hope this helps!

I got this camera in 2011 when I was just learning photography. I have always used the kit lens and a zoom lens (55-200). I have always struggled with this camera. The focus has always been an issue for me and I never felt like I could get a photo just right. Everything came out slightly blurry or parts of the photo were blurry where others were clear. I also think that it is a good entry level camera, but it's been time for me to upgrade for a long time now. I also noticed the same issues with the video mode and shooting with the display screen. I never use it because it doesn't focus quickly. I just used my camera today and it just didn't focus well for me. Does anyone else have issues like this with cameras like this that they've had to 10+ years?
@BoostLeekdMedia4 жыл бұрын
You could be getting blurry images because of your shutter speed. If you're shooting in Auto mode, the camera is probably adjusting to it's own best settings. And if you're photographing in low light conditions and you're in auto mode, the camera will most likely automatically adjust the shutter speed to be slower so you will have images that are blurry and then some that are not. Basically, it just really depends what settings you have but blurry images, usually the shutter speed is the culprit, especially in low light conditions. As for the video mode/live view, the D3100's live view/video mode is definitely out dated. The D3100 was one of Nikon's first entry-level DSLRs to have video too. As for focusing, compared to modern cameras of today, it is a bit behind BUT it's not terrible either. To cure the focusing issue, the camera needs a 'harsh' contrasty subject to focus on; like a leaf or a cup or something that the camera knows is an object. If you're photographing in low light conditions, it's going to have a really tough time autofocusing because it doesn't know what to look at. If it's slow to focus, it could also be the lens as well. There are a few things that can cause the Autofocus to be slow and get blurry images. So, I hope this helps!

I would get the D3200 if it's in your budget. While the D3100 is great, the D3200 does have more Megapixels and better lowlight capabilities. But, if you're budget is within the D3200 range, get the D3200. If your budget is not up to the D3200, the D3100 is perfectly fine. :) Save the extra money and grab a decent lens for the D3100 if you're not getting the D3200.

@BoostLeekdMedia3 жыл бұрын
@@newbieplayer1787 "better" really depends what kind of photography/videography you're doing. The D5100's articulating screen is very helpful. On the other end, the D3200's video is great and the D3200 does have 24mp. If you need the Megapixels, the D3200 is your go to. If you need better lowlight performance, the D5100 is better. Between the 2, I would use the D5100 just because it would fit my needs more. But for photography, you can not go wrong with both. It depends what you're photographing. A prime lens, like the 35mm 1.8G DX, will give you better quality images. Even the 50mm 1.8G can give you images you want. It just really depends what you're photographing. If you're looking for a versatile lens, take a look at the Sigma 17-50 2.8. I feel like a F/2.8 zoom lens will/can teach you more about aperture/shutter/iso and more. Oh yeah, cell phone cameras have definitely gotten WAY better. And in the hands of a really skilled photographer, you can get pretty amazing pics with cell phone cameras too.
