Is the Nikon Zf a good camera for wildlife photography?

Hi Steve. The new z9 firmware upgrade now give you bird detection not just animal detection, I tested it the other day and it’s quite a bit better. The autofocus now picks up birds a lot easier and sticks to them as well. I’ve heard and read that an upgrade for the z8 will come next year to offer the same.

Hi David, yes I heard about that firmware update. The Z9 is a cracking camera but a bit big and bulky for me. The Z8 is also very good but I think I will hang on for a Z6III. Hopefully it will be out next year. All the best, Steve.

A nice video Steve and the Zf would work well for you. My Z8 arrived a couple of weeks ago and I have tested it a few times, but still getting used to the AF settings etc. The results so far are excellent and you are welcome to try it out when you have the time mate.

If you can stretch to it I would go for a Z8 or Z9 Steve. More megapixels, better focus and higher frame rate make a big difference out in the field. I agree with David Sutton (comment below) the new firmware (released Oct 2023) for the Z9 is a big step and makes these cameras fantastic for birds in flight and other fast wildlife action.

Hi yes the Z8 and Z9 are both awesome cameras for wildlife photography, particularly with the firmware update. I do a bit of hiking so the Z9 is too big and bulky for me but the Z8 is an option. Thanks for watching, all the best, Steve.

I'm in a similar boat and looking for something to replace my Z5. Like you I am stuck between the Zf and waiting for a Z6iii. I can't justify the prices of the Z8 and Z9 as a hobbiest. While I am getting into bird photography I do other types of photography as well. I'm not lucky enough to be able to afford multiple bodies.

Thanks for getting in touch, the Z9 is a cracking camera but for me a bit too big and bulky. I'm getting excellent results with my Z6II. All the wildlife images on my vlogs are all taken with the Z6II so I think a Z6III would work well for me. Thanks for watching, all the best, Steve.
