The original Volkswagen Beetle: rich history and worldwide reach. The VW Bug is by far one of the most recognizable and attainable classic cars we've reviewed, but is the classic VW Beetle a good investment, or is the Volkswagen Bug sale proof?

Thank you for this nice treatment of the VW Beetle. This car is close to my heart as the 1963 Beetle was my first car back in the '70s. I bought it for $250 and it had about 69,000 miles on it. There were things about the Beetle that made it different than American made cars and even other imported cars. These differences are why the VW became such an icon and an amazing success story. The Beetle was a quality product. Even though it was cheap, the materials, fit and finish were way ahead of other cars. The convertible roof had an internal lining and glass rear window that had a fit only matched by Rolls Royce, according to a magazine review of the period. One leading consumer magazine said it was built with the solidarity of a supreme court decision. The car was very well supported by the factory. VW insisted that its dealers carry a proportional level of spare parts to their sales. This made it vastly superior than other foreign cars of the day like Peugeot and Renault. The fact is that for many years (until federal regulations requiring certain changes) the car didn't change much and many parts were interchangeable over many years. Its economy went beyond fuel consumption. It had a washable oil strainer instead of an oil filter, and it used 2-1/2 quarts of oil, the other 1/2 quart being used for the oil bath air cleaner. It was easy on tires, which was an issue back in the day. The owner's manual even gave instructions for adjusting its brakes and valves. (Not unusual requirements back then.) It was reliable. The Woody Allen movie "Sleeper" showcased this in a scene where they find a 200 year old Beetle in a cave and while saying how reliable this car was got in and it started right up! It had four wheel independent suspension and was legendary for its ability to go in snow. Until the AWD Subaru's came along, these were the cars you found up in Vermont and Maine. It's ability to float in water was indicative of how well the car was put together and its weather sealing. If you cut one in half across the roof, you would see that even in the double wall of the roof you could see that it was thoroughly painted. The chassis was so strong, that it was used as dune buggy's and Baja rallying. While in special demonstrations the engine could be removed in just a few minutes, in normal circumstances it could be easily achieved in less than a half hour. The running boards protected the sides from road splash. The front suspension could be removed in its entirety with four main bolts without removing the wheels and shocks. The car had all torsion bar suspension which reduced unsprung weight. Ferdinand Porsche created an amazing, inexpensive people's car that was way ahead of its time. If you can get one, you will not only have a piece of history, but a great driver and conversation piece.

I know VW has a huge fan base...all those 78,000 little differences, people go NUTS about that stuff! In 2006 VW partnered with First Act Guitars and included a guitar called the GarageMaster with each new vehicle purchase. I had one of those, it came from a family who bought an '06 Tiguan. Kinda wish I didn't sell that one... Even though I'm not really a car guy, I'm digging your videos! Good history on unique vehicles that are just as much a part of pop culture as guitars, if not more so. And your voice reminds me of another KZbin idol of mine, Trogly's Guitar Channel!

I actually remember hearing about that partnership when it was new! I wonder if the car and guitar pairs sold together will ever be worth anything.. It would be interesting to see if it does! I'll check out Trogly's channel and compare our voices. I'm curious now! Thanks again for watching!

You far underestimated the value of that car you are showing - easily a $15,000-$18,000 car. Assuming it is running well and has been well maintained.

I agree this an obtainable collector car! Especially because it is pure nostalgia. Cheap parts and easy to work on. We had about 5 original VWs from brand new purchased in 1968 thru the last one in 1974 then after some used ones. We also owned the original fastback and station wagon and two westfalias a 1969 and a 1976 that we heavily used to travel the USA

Having owned 3 of these, and currently own a 74 Super Beetle. The Super is slightly more stable than this car your showing but not worth as much. Unless it's a Convertible, but That's another story. I can tell you they are conversation starters when going to the store. Somebody either owned one or two. Or, they had friends or family who did. The tool kit in the trunk fetches some high prices on EBay and a site called The Samba. Usually around $300-$500 depending on if the tools are with it or not. Also the running boards were really not meant to be stepped on. They are attached to the chassis and not that good at holding weight. They protect the rear fenders from dirt and water kicking up. Though not all that well. Other than that, they were more or less there for looks.
@SaleProofCarReviews
@SaleProofCarReviews 3 жыл бұрын
The variance in worth among different Beetles is pretty interesting to follow. Either way, the Beetle is easily recognized and definitely a conversation starter. You're right about the running boards, they're not the most functional, unless you're 4'1" and 75 lbs.
@kyledavis4890
@kyledavis4890 2 жыл бұрын
The kommandeurwagen was a four wheel drive model which had a bit more clearance than the usual beetles you would see. Running boards were a hold out from the earlier era of automobiles in where you would use them to clean off your shoes before getting into your car. Agree on some of the other points you mentioned and the other guy in the comments is closer on pricing for the model that you see there than you were. Classic beetles made in Germany were dipped in paint 9 times. Quality control was fierce up until about 1968 with the passing of Heinz Nordhoff. Believe it or not, the VW Golf did outsell the beetle. 40 million of those and counting.

Thanks for the vid. I’ve loved the beetle since I was a kid.. I can still hear the unique sound of the engine in my head. I was considering getting a completely restored one and the one I’m looking at has a new engine build with 125 hp and it’s for $14k. I just don’t know how to know if it’s a sound deal or not

I was happy to make the video! I enjoyed learning more about the Beetle, its history, and the various iterations and their collectibility/value. Can you provide some more details about the Beetle you're looking at? Such as its year? The modifications done to the engine, etc?
@malcolmh5736
@malcolmh5736 3 жыл бұрын
@@SaleProofCarReviews It’s a 1972. Brand new 1968 stroker motor, w/ 125 hp. New engine has less than 100 miles, car itself has 3k miles (doesn’t say if odometer turned over). 4 wheel disc breaks, BMW paint, two tone brown and ivory, (won awards for best pain and won an award in every show it’s been in), 1965 front and rear bumpers, 4 corner air shocks with adjustable hight, new custom interior.. and more. 125 hp seems a lot for a bug.
@SaleProofCarReviews
@SaleProofCarReviews 3 жыл бұрын
That's helpful information. From what I was able to find, a 1972 Super Beetle in good running condition is valued anywhere from $11K to $15K. There has obviously been some work done to this one making it unoriginal, but well restored cars can fetch figures close to their appraised value. Based on that, to me it seems like a sound deal.
