The naming is just like Sony's cameras. Instead of treating it like a complex math problem inform your audience. Xperia 1 is the premium flagship, Xperia 5 is regular flagship, Xperia 10 is mid-range. The "i" represents which generation the device is; Sony rebooted their mobile line up in 2019 using the Xperia 1/5/10 naming scheme, 2021 is the third year using this naming scheme, hence the "iii".

crazy how a phone that basically lacks 0 features is considered an enthusiast by some reviewers. Apple and Samsung removed features from their phones and continued to increase the price. now that we have a manufacturer that is actually giving people features that should be found on a device so expensive, it's labeled and categorized as "not for everyone". shame to see marques take this approach to it as well instead of speaking out against the manufactures that continue to charge consumers more for less. this is what you should be getting from any flagship over $1000. the only thing this phone is missing to make it more mainstream is a better computational auto mode and a better selfie camera. other than that, it's pretty normal in terms of flagship phones nowadays, it just does everything that the competition can do, better. s21 ultra is $1250 and does not have a headphone jack, expandable storage, speakers as good as this phone or even phones like the rog 5 and mi 11 ultra. the 1 iii outperforms all of these phones too in real-life benchmark tests and in synthetic benchmarks all for an addition $50. not to mention the base model s21 only has 156gb compared to the base 256gb that the 1 iii comes with. sony has also spoke on giving 3 years of OS updates. the phone is not for enthusiasts, it's everything a flagship smartphone should be. had oneplus, Samsung, or Xiaomi released this phone, no one would call it an enthusiast phone, but rather the most complete phone. i left this comment on another video, but i figured i'd share it here. this is all just my opinion though

So far, Sony has been rolling out a respectable amount of updates for their phones, at least over here in South-East Asia. The screen is 1080p most of the time rather than 4K, it is automated like the adaptive refresh rate on others. The panel sucks so much power possibly due to the very tight pixel opening for light to pass through, so more power on the backlight needed to get a decently bright panel. To me, the dual focal-length make more sense than dual-aperture since: 1) Sensor size is too small on smartphone sensors to get a significant difference between partly open and fully open aperture. 2) Dual focal length should help with space-saving if not cost-saving. More importantly, manufacturers can focus on placing better sensors for their optional lenses since they can use 1 sensor for 2 focal lengths.

You tell them to delve into manual or professional mode where Sony has all sorts of settings and customization that yields incredible results that no other smartphone can match and they tell you the lame excuse that most people want point and shoot and would use things in auto mode. I can bet you if Samsung releases a professional mode option any where as good as Sony they would blow it up like they started it just like they do with slow motion video 120 fps. The worst part is I have seen other comparisons of the Sony in auto mode beating the I phone 12 max in most conditions except the front facing camera which I'll admit is average from Sony. It seriously pisses me off that these high profile media celebrities make fun of how Xperia generations are labeled and just how Sony chooses to name their phones in general. If Apple started making a camera lineup and naming it iCamera, iCamera II, iCamera III, iCamera IV, etc., I highly doubt they would make fun of that the way they did in the beginning of this video. Like other commenters mentioned, since 2019, Sony relaunched their Xperia series with 3 model lineups: Xperia 1, 5, and 10. The use of numbers is consistent with the way Japanese name many of their Cameras with lower number being better than higher numbers. For example, Canon's 1D lineup is "better" or more premium than their 5D lineup. This naming scheme is not always the case, but in Japanese culture, something labeled with a lower number generally has the connotation that it's better in some way than something similar labeled with a higher number (think of it like 1st place is better than 5th place). Regarding the generation count, it's the same way Sony names their Alpha cameras, and the way we name Iron's Man's suit, but nobody has any problems with either of those two things for some reason.

A phone is the "flagship of the fleet" when it's the best/most promoted of a manufacturer's "fleet" of products. Any manufacturer who cares to place a model above the others now has a flagship model. It's as simple as that.

I just left Samsung and got an xperia 1 III and I am so happy about it. Battery is fine last me a full day with heavy use before having to charge. Although it does drain faster than Samsung which I could use for about 2 days before charging. Camera is far better than samsung in most way if you spend time learning how to use the camera. Took me like 45 min. When you start zooming quite far, it falls flat on its face though. Having an audio jack is objectivly better in every way over not having it. Not having a giant hole in the screen is objectivly better than having it. If I have a single dead pixel on my pc monitor I send it in and have it repaired, why would I accept like 100 dead pixels on my phone? Yes you can make a fake bezel, but then you just have a far bigger bezel and you don't even have a forward facing speaker which is objectivly worse than having it. The only reason for the notch and punch hole camera is for marketing reasons so they can claim they have more screen to phone ratio which is a total lie since anything at the same height as the notch/punchole is worthless screen. It doesn't require a secondary tool to open the sim card. It has a mirco SD card slot which is objectivly better than not having one. These are not "enthusiast" things (minus the camera). They are objectivly better features to have on a phone over not having it. There is no auto-rotate delay what so ever, so was clearly a bug, should probably have figured that out before making videos on it. The screen isn't as bright as I'd like, but there is literally no problem at all standing directly under the sun and seeing everything on the screen. So although a minus for the sony it is hardly deal breaking. It also doesn't have bixby which is a massive pro to me personally since I ride a motorcycle and use a voice activation headset inside the helmet, however whenever I try to use assistant, it forces me to use Bixby which is so horrible, I am better off stopping somewhere on the road and doing it manually. I know that last point is very rare and anecdotal, but it was the final straw of many that made me move to Sony.

I own the the Xperia 1 MKiii and absolutely love it. I don't know what Brownlee is saying about the auto rotate, it works fine to me. When I first got it, their was a software update waiting. Perhaps, he didn't update his phone. Mine works annoyingly too good. But I have to ask, why is this a weird phone. Is it weird because it has a headphone jack? Is it weird because it has a SD card slot? Is it weird because it has a 4K @ 120hz display? Is it weird because the actual screen doesn't have a stupid hole punch or notch? Ask yourself this question. Does a tv or computer monitor have a distractive hole punch or notch? Do you want one? Or, would you want one. Sony's screen makes absolute sense. It is clean, visible and enjoying to watch content without distractions. So, it has small little bezels top and bottom.Barely noticeable. So do monitors and tv's. This phone is remarkable. It has everything for the same price as the Galaxy S21 Ultra and iPhone 13 Pro Max (what's so Pro about this phone), definitely more (sd card expansion, headphone jack, 4k @ 120hz display, charging brick, etc.). Not saying the mentioned phones are bad (I got iPhone 12 mini, before getting my Xperia 1 MKiii). I'm just saying that the Xperia has more features than the mentioned phones for the same price (actually cheaper if you think about it) and its super clean. I generally care less about the reviewer or their intentions. However, I do care when they're just being illogical. What's wrong with "One Mark Three"? Nothing. Notice he's always trying to call it "One Three", ignoring the "mark" to make sound confusing. 4k display is a gimmick now till Samsung Nd apple does it. Then it's labelled the "best thing since sliced bread" When the likes of Xiaomi had terrible camera software, their default remark was "slap a gcam on it" and it was fine. But they never cut Sony any slack. They never highlight all the other amazing camera features like human and animal eye tracking Nd just the sheer amount of manual controls you can't find on any other smartphone. And what about the fact that it's fine for apple Nd Samsung to have phones in this according to them "ridiculous price range", without as much as a charger in the box. But a device that has one, while keeping beloved features like a headphone jack, expandable storage, notification lights better display (gimmick or not) and even bundled with quality wireless headphones depending on region purchased from, is cursed for daring to be priced competitively. I genuinely hope people can see beyond the bias Nd hatered of these reviewers Nd give the company a chance. I'm currently using the XZ Premium because I'm not fortunate to be able to afford a flagship. It's not a perfect phone but it's served me super well (considering I'm not the most careful user) Nd outlasted galaxys my friends purchased around the same time. So I think, every phone that is able to have the screen on for more than 5 hours, should be able to get a day of usage without problems. Software on Sony side does not come so fast since the launch of Xperia1, but you still get updates monthly and in terms of stability, there are more reliable, even better than Apple ones. Samsung's naming scheme is actually decent besides the fact they skipped S11-19. People will know what you're talking about the S21 or S21 Ultra, and the numbers all mean something. The problem with Sony and Apple is they have double "clarifiers". It doesn't make sense to have "1" and "III" when the you only need one number to clarify what product it is. Apple is in this in-between where the "pro" and "max" both technically mean something, but once again, it's a "double clarifier"

4K looks amazing and there's nothing that come close to this. In a world where flagships phones are downgrading their display to 1080p (which looks terrible due to OLED's subpixel layout) I can easily recommend the Xperia 1 III if you want a sharp and clean display. Honestly, I never knew how terrible 1080p OLED is until I got the S21. The display has noticeable sub-pixel fringing around edges and especially around text. After I upgraded to the Xperia 1 III, I was amazed why people continued to buy Samsung phones, then I saw your review. It was surprisingly (and oddly) positive given that they removed the SD card slot and downgraded the display. I guess Samsung's paying you to say good things about their products even if it's terrible. That's why I don't trust "reviewers" nowadays.
@jackskellington6sic62 жыл бұрын
First of all it runs in 1080p 90% of the time for most people. Second of all 1080p even oled doesn't look that bad. 3rd of all flagships downgrading to 1080p is not as bad as even further over priced flagships downgrading to the brightness of 7-8 year old flagships. The display looks nice but has a couple large drawbacks and the devices slack on other ways compared to current flagships and lower end devices. Yet is even more over priced than the rest. So they all have issues. But at least the others don't charge more than even crapple while being years behind in display, speakers, battery, and camera like Sony

If variable aperture comes with an increased chance of mechanical failure, likely not. This is only a 12MP camera so they're definitely not selling off megapixels, but rather the different fixed focal lengths and Sony's color science, sensors, and Zeiss lenses

Screen resolution is dynamic, and that's why you can not do anything about it. It is going to be used at full res ONLY on several apps, that support it. I guess they do not have several options cause it's harder to test properly and because 4k even at 60hz is a battery burner. 1mk2 is fine with its 4000 mAh battery and 4k, guess dynamic resolution is an answer. Just like Oneplus wanted to preserve battery by locking out performance cores in some apps like twitter and chrome. You can even test your 1mk2 in benchmarks - and get surprising results about actually rendered resolution. BTW, fhd+ is better when rendered at qhd+ screen IMHO.

Notification led, expandable storage, stereo speakers, 3.5 headphone jack etc. are ridiculous dinosaur stuff... I wish they removed all that crap, named it the GT50 Ultra Mega Pro and changed the 21:9 to a more reasonable 20.5:9 and gave us a modern hole punch display as well. That would make the experience much better and more "Ultra Pro". A giant camera bump on the back with enlarged holes would for sure make others see how rich I am and I'm not getting it here. I own a Samsung S9+ time to get a new phone. Tired of Samsung's, is a great product, I have just outgrown Samsung. Sees Apple, I have one as a work phone, very familiar. Sees SONY...ACTUALLY looks at the phone objectively compares to Samsung and Apple smartphone flagships. Looks back at SONY Xperia 1 iii. Finds a few of the only subjective reviews about all products, does own thorough research, then decides I am a SONY person. Realizes most people are afraid to objectively review anything other than a Samsung, iPhone, or Pixel objectively. This is why most souls don't deserve a SONY Xperia 1 iii. If they are happy with that, I am happy with that. If you start listening/reading a review objectively, you will be able to know when that reviewer is actually being subjective. Most people are first-order thinkers and can't get out of their own way to try something new. Second-order thinkers are few and far between. Marques is either a first-order thinker or a shill when it comes to SONY phones or both. BIG THUMBS DOWN on his assessment.

Well, you can't change the resolution because it changes itself, take a SS in the UI and you will see that the resolution is 1080p, then take a SS in a KZbin video at 2160p and you will see it's 1620p , in gallery again 1620p, in chrome, and other apps is 1620p, but on fb. Instagram, Twitter etc, and UI is only 1080p at 120hz. Some say that when it is on 4k it's only capped at 60hz, which i think makes sense, except when you play a game and want more then 60fps on 4k. The legendary GSMArena 😅 explained it well and they also say they confirmed with Sony this info. Honestly, i think it's ok, but could have been great if instead of 1080p was 1440p at 120, or 1440p at 90hz all the time or 4k because from 1440 to 1620 is so little, at 90hz all the time would have been a much better idea, but it is what it is and sadly i have a feeling that i am getting somewhat tricked by Sony and their advertising 4k 120hz because it's not , at least it's not in the same time...
