Is the Surface Laptop 3 Still Worth It With the Surface Laptop 4 in the Picture?

Hey all! Recorded this before the launch of the Surface Laptop 4, which is why my guesses on the Surface Laptop 4 were just based off of rumors. Now that we've seen the announcement, how do folks feel about the new Surface Laptop 4?

Yep, I love the design it's just getting a little stale. Shrinking the bezels and a few extra ports would have gone a long way for me

please make one for the surface laptop 4, would like to know your opinion :)

Thank you! I think the Surface Laptop Go was a perfect system to put the SQ2, but Microsoft probably decided they wanted it to be as compatible as possible for the education market. I agree, I still prefer Windows too

I love how when a laptop comes out it works great it's amazing. Then in a year or two its "Well it's running pretty slow in the same applications" right? That makes no sense.

I agree, I think it’s all relative. When this laptop came out, there weren't more modern computers to compare it to.

Was thinking about getting the surface laptop 3 because it's cheaper now. Was going for it's 10th Gen i7 processor, however I was wondering if you knew how the big the difference is on the new surface laptop 4 11th Gen i7. I only indeed to do school work and very light gaming, do you reckon I should just pay extra for the laptop 4 i7? I am thinking about future proofing it with the processor.

The 11th gen Core i7 is substantially better in several benchmarks, but we have to see how the applies with the Surface Laptop 4's cooling solution. I'd say it depends on the deal. You can get a free pair of Surface Earbuds with a SL4 purchase, but if you can find a SL3 for significantly cheaper, might make sense to just go with it because it will likely last you several years

really good analysis on the device! I cannot decide which brand or model I should buy but this helped me a lot understanding what this Surface 3 (and 4) is missing in comparison to others.. I'm quite disappointed about the already old processors and the lack of restiling of the surface laptop 4... seems like they're going on with the "if it ai'nt broken don't fix it" kind of thinking, which I believe is gonna backfire... would you recommend any 3:2 or 16:10 device, apart from the dell XPS 13 which is over budget for me?

The older processors will still have alright performance, but just not stand up to some of the newer processors from AMD. That will really only matter in the near term if you have need of the additional performance (day to day won't feel any different). The HP Spectre now comes in a 14 inch 3:2 model, along with some Lenovo laptops switching to 16:10. The other alternative is a MacBook but not everyone wants to switch to MacOS. The Verge has an article titled "Goodbye and good riddance to the 16:9 aspect ratio" which you might find helpful

I do prefer the solid key pad version. I had the Surface Pro 4 with the velvet keypad. It began to look kind of dirty and worn and I couldn't do anything to clean it up. The Laptop 3 is sleek and very solid. I have the iris Graphics processor which is great, but Microsoft has limited the graphic experience by not including the Intel control panel. That, to me was a big mistake. Having that extra control with the Intel graphics software would have substantially improved the graphics quality. Has anyone found a solution here"

@@ridziridz1310 Thanks for your question. The 3 and 4 are pretty close in size. Surface laptop 4 has higher performance, but having the Laptop 3 for awhile now, the screen is very nice and should be O.K. for what you want to do. For video editing, you might want to have something with more video performance. I was looking a the Dell XPS because of the video quality and processing speed but they apparently had overheating issues. My Surface laptop 3 runs cool and is quite fast.

So the keys' surface is different between the Alcantara and the metal version?

I don't have the two side by side with me, but I recall my original Surface Laptop's keys had a more plasticky surface where this one's keys feel more metallic.

if you dont care about attaching an external graphics card becaues your work doesnt have anything do with it, then it doesnt matter that it doesnt have Thunderbolt

External graphics cards, high speed storage, and some docking stations. Generally, yes. USB C 3.1 Gen 2 is fast enough for most, but it will be slower than newer systems when more peripherals are supported.

@@innoiso That's true. You're right, this laptop is already outdated due to a lack of Thunderbolt support. But if someone is not going to be using a dock nor adding the latest, highest speed peripherals other than occasional use of a thumb drive to transfer Word and Powerpoint docs, then a lack of Thunderbolt is not an issue. It would have been *perfect* if the Surface Laptop 4 did come with TB and a normal sized M.2 SSD for upgradability, expandability, and heavier use. The SL4 is more than enough for majority of consumers, especially if they arent tech-savvy enthusiasts with half-demanding workloads or content creators with heavy workloads or engineers who run simulation software. They'd probably be looking at different computers to begin with.

I'm with you. Ironically enough I'm reviewing a SL4 as we speak and it actually looks to have enough horsepower to handle some more enthusiast workflows too. It's a great machine

Modern laptops might be a bit more speedy. The chip should be able to handle most standard use though. If you can get it for a good price, the design will still feel nice and premium
