Is the United States a democracy? Is the United States a republic? I clear up the confusion in this video.

300 years ago it made more sense to have a few representatives from each state go to Washington D. C. to advocate for their state. The logistics of travel and lack of communication technology didn't support more direct democracy. Today we have the communication technology that would allow for more direct democracy opportunities. But of course what's really dumb is that people in power want to keep that power and are so afraid to look outside the box and embrace new ideas that could strengthen our democracy. If we would actually believe in democracy and its ability to create the best society possible we would want as much direct democracy as possible rather than holding on to old forms of democracy.

I really got a lot out of this video, thanks Romano, really got me thinking. Could this be the core of our political problems today? Think about how much our society has evolved and changed since the founding of our country, yet we are still trying to operate with the same political mechanics that were put in place 300 years ago, obviously it going to cause problems. Keeping so much power and influence in so few "representatives" of which so many or most only represent the biggest corporations is the core of the problem.

A republic is a governmental system without a king. It can be a democracy or an oligarchy. Is the US a democracy? It is flawed democracy. The senate is not democratic. The method of electing the president is skewed to one party. The general idea of democracy is not so much defined by voting. It is more a political process thing. A government to keep power has to create coalitions. People groups and classes can impact on policy by arguing with the government at an intellectual level or they can bargain. The process allows for resource distribution not to be arbitrary and for government to be objective and held up to scrutiny.

No, that's not what a republic is. And your general idea of "democracy" is wrong too. Words have meaning. They don't just mean whatever you want them to mean.

@@TheRomanoReport Yea I know I was using words to say the truth. You saying that the Roman and Venetian Republics were democratic?
