Other Cosmere books you can try are Yumi and the Nightmare painter, and The Emperor’s soul. That last ones is a novella. Very short but so impactful.

Unfortunately I've also had alllll the spoilers for Yumi, but I could definitely do Emperor's Soul!

Really good video. I'm new to Sanderson, as well, but have been really impressed with what I've read, so far (the first Mistborn trilogy and The Way of Kings). I've read somewhere around 250 fantasy books (mostly adult but some YA and middle-grade) but have been hesitant to pick up his books due to some hate reviewers bashing him on Goodreads and youtube. After reading the four books I did, I now know these reviewers don't seem to know what they're talking about and seem a bit unhinged. A few of the reviewers I saw doing this gave all 4 Stormlight books 1 out of 5 stars and were using words like "unreadable," "dumb/stupid," and "terrible," and went on to make lots of false claims about them. There's a girl on youtube who made an entire video talking about how Brandon Sanderson is a misogynist and that The Way of Kings is a deeply misogynistic book that no woman in their right mind should read. Well I, for one, read it, really liked it and didn't find it to be that way, at all. (Sorry for the rant, I just wish I hadn't let these people sway my opinion of an author before actually reading his works, and it really bugs me that there are people out there that do this kind of stuff.) I'm not really sure why this happens. Maybe it's a compulsion to hate someone who's popular? Idk, but what I _do_ know is that Sanderson became one of my favorite authors in a very short amount of time. Not only are his worldbuilding, characters and magic systems incredibly well crafted, but so are his actual stories. They're deep, complex, have great themes and (as far as Mistborn goes) very good endings. (I've heard that his endings being really good is a typical thing.) His worlds and stories being unique is also a plus, in my book. My only complaints with him, so far, are minor. In Mistborn the pacing is kinda up and down. Overall, it's not bad but it's definitely not consistent. I give The Way of Kings a pass, in this regard, since it's a huge book and is the beginning of a very big series so it had a lot of foundation to lay. All of it being important, as well. The only other issue I had was that in Mistborn some of his characters are underdeveloped. His main characters were great but some of the side characters needing more fleshing out. Mistborn is some of his earliest work, however, and this wasn't an issue in The Way of Kings, so I noticed a real improvement with his writing between the two series. Many people have stated that he's continually improved throughout his career and that has me really excited to read his future works. One last thing: I've heard some people bashing his writing for being "too straightforward" or "having bad prose" but I, very honestly, do not understand this. A straightforward writing style is a type of prose, and there are many different types. This is a specific style of writing that many authors use. I don't understand how some people are trying to make the claim that certain writing styles are inherently worse. Whichever style of prose you like more, whether it be simple, flowery or inbetween is entirely subjective. And as far as simple prose goes, I think Sanderson does an excellent job with it. The way he's able to describe his world, specific scenes, character interactions, action, etc, is not only impressive but, in my opinion, is very impressive. And I'm someone who actually prefers a bit more purpleness (not too much but some) to my prose so it's not like I'm someone who simply prefers straightforward writing. I was wondering what your thoughts were on this, as well as what your take is on the hate reviewers who constantly feel compelled to bash him and give him the lowest scores they can even though his books are, in reality, objectively good.

I knew nothing about Sanderson before Way of Kings. I was just chipping away at it for months. Then the last few hundred pages OMG! I read the end so in just a day! Then Words of Radiance in 2 weeks. Most of Shalan and Dalinar were boring to start. But starting in book 2 they are all good characters!

I plan on reading Stormlight here soon, but first I've gotta force my way through Mistborn. From what I understand, though, I am going to enjoy Stormlight a whole lot more.

Read Warbreaker before Stormlight. That is basically the only reading order that matters with the cosmere books
