People are far more impacted by economic and welfare policy than the actual economy. Besides that, unlimited economic growth in a limited world is not sustainable. You may debate what level of economic wealth we should strife for, but at some point we have to say enough is enough. The larger the population, the lower that level is for a sustainable economy. We already consume well over the reproductive level of earth. Damaging the environment to have more economic wealth does not increase wellbeing.

I'm in my forties, and a low birth rate means less people who could potentially replace me at work. Companies will treat me well and I won't be facing unemployment. On the other hand, I live in a country with public health care, therefore one day I'll need young workers to pay my pension. My point is, most of the immigrants who are coming here are uneducated and don't have the skills necessary to do my job. And my country is not rich enough to attract skilled people from a abroad. We have enough resources,.. it's just that people are to greedy and wasteful. Take for example Housing. In the USA, roughly 15 million homes are vacant at any point in time. Roughly 10% of the housing market is just sitting there un-used. Meanwhile we have an estimated 600,000 homeless. The vacant housing we have could fix the homeless problem 30x over,.. yet we sit here doing nothing. Take food-waste for example. Something like 30% of food waste is lost in transport. If we managed resources better, we could double or triple the amount of people on the planet and probably nobody would even notice. Global Population density is roughly 59 people per square kilometer. In that density you probably barely even interact with the other 58 people. (and remember that's only on a flat plane.). Most studies show an individual person only needs around 600 to 700 sq feet of housing space. (I currently live in an apartment less than 400sq feet, and it's probably double what I realistically need).

A lot of people are focussing on the overall population who think that it is only the total number being too high which is the problem. Yes, a large total population does put a strain on the environment through greater consumption. However, the biggest problem in the near future is that the age ratios in many of these countries will get misaligned. Many countries around the world will reach a situation where the number of retirees is not supported by a large enough number of workers. In most developed countries the largest portion of government expenditure goes towards helping to pay for retirement pensions and to pay for medical systems which are disproportionately used by the elderly. As the numbers of elderly increases relative to the number of workers/tax payers the economic strain on the workers increases. Governments will need to both raise taxes on those working while also raising the retirement age and cutting expenditure on the elderly in some way. It is also possible that the coming AI and robotic revolution will reduce some of the strain by making a lot of labour infinitely cheaper. The future will be interesting.

People are having fewer children primarily due to urbanization. Once you live in a town/city, it doesn’t feel like you “need“ children. Your life will be more or less the same, whether you have children or not. It’s basically a free-rider problem as it’s in everybody’s interest that somebody has kids, but it’s very expensive to be the one having them. I would be in favor of much greater government subsidy to families with children, paid for by slightly higher taxes on people without children. Theoretically, that should have an “evening out” effect where having kids will not be as expensive as not having them.

We are running out of oil, oil reserves will most likely be depleted within the next 50 to 100 years. An older population is parasitic and burdensome on anyone who is younger and in the workforce under forced taxation. I will be encouraging my children to not participate in the standard workforce when they have children. One of the issues that is missing on all of these discussions on population collapse is that fact that large parts of African ecnonmies for many highly populated countries are propped up by economic aid as well as food aid in the even of bad climate events. If the rest of the world have economies that are halved in size due to population collapse then they will be struggling to survive and wont be sending food aid to ertirea or Sudan or where-ever.

For the good life that we see ideal in the developed world, earth can only support ~50 million people living that lifestyle without ushering in swift consequences that will usher in a sharp drop in population and lots of adversity. I think the only path forward for families who don't want to die out is to encourage and support more children among our children, while at the same time working jobs which are disconnected from the main economy, and perhaps trading in non-taxable goods and services. This might look like multi-generational households on rural land working to produce food, water, and shelter for ourselves while not having so much of an official paid and taxed job. In this example, a family group of 20 people may have 3 or 4 elders, 6 or eight working adults, and the rest children. Maybe two houses among them, and one or two vehicles. Those who have part-time standard jobs would pay for taxation and medical care, while everyone else focuses on the primary needs of life such as farming, producing goods for local sale, and craftsmanship of needed services to their local community. Any other sort of setup would be punitive on the youth, who would be forced to bear an undue taxation burden because of all the people in the larger outside population who refused to have children. The childless elders would first need to die off before young people could exist and not be under a crushingly unfair tax burden.

I know a lot of elderly people. Few are in nursing homes. Children are unproductive. A young population has fewer of its citizens in the workforce that does an ageing population. It is a case of supporting the elderly instead of children and their mothers.

I'm a stay at home Mom of 4 years to two little boys, and I'm desperate to get back in the workforce. I'm so thankful for all the women who work and work while raising children. My primary physician is a woman, my Orthodontist is a woman, my Gynecologist is a woman, a few months ago most of the nurses that tended to my infant's UTI in the ER were women, my sons future teachers will most likely be a woman. You call these women wage slaves but they are doing what's best for themselves, their families, and their communities.
