The Olympics represent not only the pinnacle of athletic perfection, but also the forefront of sport technology. The Hope Lotus track bike is the epitome of this technology, combining radical aerodynamics and an incredibly strong carbon fibre construction to create the ultimate track bike. But how much faster is it than a standard track bike? We're in Derby to find out!

They used the rim brake pinarello against a bike with 32 mm crossed spokes even if they’d popped in a radial shamal from the 80s they may have shown that we’ve achieved nothing in the last 30 years. A shamal narrowing the bars and hiding the cables would have more than narrowed the gap. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z56tYWmjp9RonNk In the more recent video if Simon had run a modern 2x11 groupset the gap to would have been almost nothing kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYe2c5qbhKiMnM0 For all the marketing spin the difference aero between a 2010 carbon bike and a modern one is practically zero and only by optimising the test can a modern disc bike beat a steel bike from the 70s. I never could understand the weekend warriors paying thousands for bikes. Literally the only time shaving fractions of a second comes into play is when you've reached optimum physical performance and you're in a race where beating someone by an inch matters. This guy saved 3.07 seconds off a kilometer on track conditions. Riding on the road, you'd barely notice a difference between a bike built by NASA or a $169 700c bike from Walmart. When I was commuting on a bike, traveling 40+ miles per day, I took great pleasure flying past $2000+ Specialized and Cannondales on my yard sale Huffy "mountain bike".

Drive train’s difference is minimum. I guess wheels is a big part (tri-spoke+disc vs normal), my guess is 2 seconds are due to that, then position (super bike is obviously lower), then maybe handle bar in the front and other small things. That transfer well to the road too, given same riding position, same wheel/tire, aero gains from frame is minimum.

Yes, for a Brit Cycling TEAM member, on a very high quality INDOOR track, I was a bit shocked at how slow those times were, even if the kilo (or any of the timed track events) is not his specialty. I used to ride 1:18 or better kilos as a junior in the early 1970s, on an 400 meter outdoor track with a surface like Flanders cobbles, in wind, 52x16 gearing, on a bike that makes that 'track rental' steed seems like a modern high tech aero WONDER. And I was a CLIMBER, NOT a sprinty track rider! I was expecting a 1:12 or better on the 'slow' bike (even if it was totally wrong for him fit/sizing/gearing wise), and at least a 1:07 on the whiz bang aero tech alien bike from another universe. I understand that he could not take this too seriously, and put in a full-on, max watt effort, but those rides were probably not even a 'Zone 2' output for him!!

this did one thing for me.. it tells me that if a bog standard frame can be that close to the most aero $$$$$ bike in the uk... then buying a stock aero bike fom your local bike shop is absolutely pointlessly not worth it!!

As Ollie rightly points out - it is likely the tires, wheels, position - bar width! - and maybe not the crazy expensive carbon or very strange design. Up against other real race bikes at the track championships it was pretty clear that it was the riders on those bikes that made them fast - not the bikes. Harry Lavrijsen on his bike up against anyone in the world on the Hope? My money is on Harry.

So basically, as long as the athletes don't have the same kind of bike no one can say who is the best athlete. All the competions are useless.

If you did some stem and bar swapping, you might gain a second on the original set up of the rental bike......PS. How much would that rental bike cost??

If you swaped the gear ratios around the Hope would have been slower - come on guys the 50+ riders are doing 1.10 or less for 1Km!

I think Alex actually did a faster time on the same bike during an earlier video with Manon… get the feeling that Ollie really wasn’t trying. I’ve been riding track for barely a year and pulled a 1:15 kilo on an outdoor velodrome with cheaper bike than that rental. Normally love all the track content on the channel, but this was pretty average

The 'price' of aero effectiveness I guess. The MOST fugly Formula 1 rides ever had/have all of those insane 'bargy boards', dive planes, and all sorts of wind tripping s**t on them to help their cornering speeds without killing their straight line speed.

Even though 3 seconds may not seem like much at first, in a short 10km race that 3 second difference grows to 30 seconds, even if the riders are exactly the same level!

With different gear ratios and tyres there is no way of telling if that bike really is 3 seconds faster than the hire bike. But hey it helped the GB men to clinch 7th in the Team Pursuit, their worst result since 1996...

All that money they spent, this bike is so much like the diamondback Andean. They should just ride the same equipment for races and give the money to the athletes instead. Save the tech for against the clock if that’s all money can buy.
