I'm 5'9" 180lbs. I"ve had my R3 for a year. not bored at all. but then again, I didn't buy it to be a toy. It easily out accelerates most cars, out corners most cars and all cruisers, easily passes on the highway. It'll go 90mph all day long, tops out at 110, which is more than enough for me. I have no desire to go speeds that will turn me into hamburger, so I love this bike. Just rode it from CT to TN and back, last weekend. Kept up with my friends' Harleys on the highway, and they could nowhere near keep up with me on the curvy backroads of Tennessee. I even averaged 65mpg for the trip! I slip over in the seat and lean it right over into some pretty tight turns and it shows no sign of slippage, even with the stock bias ply tires. So if you get "bored" on a bike like that, you'll just about get bored with anything. Anyone who gets bored on a motorcycle, is the type of person that has to constantly push their limits until the laws of physics kicks them right in the nuts.

By the way most cars on the road dont try to race you on take off like you do. So you dont know they are faster than most cars. R3 is quick to a certain point compared to a 3000 pd car with 140 hp, not necessarily faster than most cars.
@briancooney99527 жыл бұрын
I don't try to race me on take off like I do.
@briancooney99527 жыл бұрын
My point was more in regards to people who say this bike is slow, and therefore not safe on the highway, because it "can't pass" or some bullshit. That may be the case, you're some 300lb fatass, but for the average rider, that's not the case. It's just that most riders are used to the ridiculous specifications of larger displacement bikes.
@LoadPast7 жыл бұрын
It makes me laugh when people say theyre worried theyll get bored on a 400lb bullet that can go over 100 mph. Pretty much any bike over 200ccs can turn you into pulled pork. Being "bored" should be the least of their worries.

I was at a Yamaha demo ride on Saturday. The Yamaha rep said the R3 was the top selling motorcycle in Canada in 2016. Close behind was the FZ-07 which I test rode. These entry-level bikes may not have a lot of horsepower but they are extremely fun to ride and inexpensive to own and operate even for experienced riders. Non-motorcyclists can't even tell the difference between an R3 and an R6 or an FZ-07 and a FZ-09.
@touristguy877 жыл бұрын
um, they're not "extremely fun to ride even for experienced riders" Some people may think they are fun to ride, but my guess is that to a large degree, to a significant amount they are BIASED by the fact that those are the fastest bikes they can afford to buy and ride. Because the simple fact is that for a lot of them if they could afford a faster bike, then for sure they would buy one. The bikes are not only right there in the showroom but they are clearly faster. Short of buying a Grom or a dirt-bike it is hard to buy a bike that is slower than an R3 that still has a running engine. And it's just ridiculous to make such sweeping blanket generalizations in the first place. Babble on all you want if you want to believe that shit, but try to keep in mind that some people will disagree with you and at some point learn to deal with it.

Yea man i rode a 600 and gotta say love my r1, yea the r3 has 6 gears but in 6th gear or 5th or 4th lol even 3rd at highway speeds there is not much torque to get out of the way. where as my R1 even if im in 6th gear if i twist the throttle it pulls. maybe this bike is good for city riding around town or something but i would never take it on the highway. plus its light so the wind is gonna be pushing you all over the place lol and if your tall your probably gonna to look a little silly on this thing.

+ touristguy87. In many countries riders have restrictions for the first three years they hold a licence. In Australia as an example - there is a restriction of 150kw per tonne. Which effectively means you can't ride anything with a power to weight ratio greater than an R3 for the first three years of holding a licence. Ignoring the rules is very expensive as in $5k plus of fines, plus any liabilities if involved in an accident due to any insurance you took out being invalid for non approved bikes. There are Learner Approved Motorcycles [LAMS] which are up to 660cc - but they have to be factory detuned - then meet government approval to qualify for riders on restricted licences. Hence, for most people it's best to use the 3 years wisely in developing your road skills and save your money for when you get a full licence without the restrictions. That is why we have a lot of interest in some countries for Bikes that people in the USA might not otherwise consider. Looking at motorcycle deaths in the USA it's not hard to understand why other countries have decided to impose restrictions.

at one point some very intelligent people believed that communism was the cure to mankinds' ills....that proved to not be the case. The fact that all this bullshit sounds good to you and you believe it? That tells me that you have deep-rooted control issues. Unfortunately that bullshit doesn't solve the problem of people buying bikes and crashing and killing themselves who are simply bad riders, bad riding material...it just convinces people that they are good riders when they aren't...but that's what bullshit tends to do, in general.
@touristguy877 жыл бұрын
You are juggling a bunch of unrelated facts and trying to make a pleasant-tasting meal out of them. The R3 may be the top selling bike in Canada. That doesn't mean that it's fun to ride. The riding requirements in Australia are one thing, the requirements in Canada are another thing. They both have tiered licenses, but that doesn't mean the tiered-license program works the same. Canada, I am fairly sure, does not recognize US motorcycle licenses. I suspect that Canada has a country-wide licensing program, US motorcycle licenses are issued on a per-state basis. The tests vary from state to state. Would that stop a US motorcycle-license holder from riding a bike legally in Australia? I don't even know. I know that it would stop a US rider from riding legally in Canada. When you have a tiered license system that REQUIRES you to start with a neutered bike and the R3 is most definitely a neutered bike, then don't be surprised that the top selling bike is a neutered bike. Does that mean that it's fun to ride? Fun for who, exactly? If it's the top-selling bike because it's literally the fastest bike they can buy and ride legally on public roads? Then it may very well be a lot of fun for them to ride, but clearly they don't have much of a choice. It's either take a bike like this or don't ride.

I purchased an r3 as my first bike and love it. It handles great and has just enough go to have fun. with that being said I will upgrade to a larger bike next year, but keep the r3 for track days and when I want to go through the twisties fast and low. I've so far had it for a month and a half putting 3k miles on it getting an average of 57mpg. Great starter bike or a bike to rip around on.
@Rncfbnx6 жыл бұрын
My brother had this bike and it was my first bike when he upgraded to an R6. This bike is amazing. This and the new ninja 400 are probably the best starters in the motorcycle world. This bike did everything I wanted it too and more. Can’t say anything bad about it honestly. After 10 months I decided to get my own bike which is the 2017 Daytona 675R. In love with the Daytona, but I still remember where I started. I actually took it out for a spin the other day and it was amazing to just pin the throttle and go through all the gears. Sadly, I don’t own the bike and I’m pretty sure my brother is going to sell it so when I get my own place I’m definitely going to think about getting a low powered bike like the R3 or the ninja 400. You can act like a hooligan without getting into too much trouble. Great vid bro. Keep it up

With my slip on Akrapovic carbon fiber, the engine screams which it won't with the standard pipe. In Georgia we have a wonderful road of technical turns (switchbacks) and it's 62 miles long. State road 60 from Blue Ridge to Dahlonega, and this bike handles everything well. Most under 200 lb. riders are getting times of 5.8-6.0 seconds to 62 (100 Km), and top speed varies from 107-115, so there are no conditions it can't handle. However, new tyres, new adjustable levers, 150/60 rear, new rear sprocket to compensate for a z-rated wider tire( slightly less diameter), saddlemen matched seat, and other stuff. I road near seven hours straight riding through the mountains, and on interstates, and this bike does what it's suppose to do.

Problem with the CBR500R is that the insurance costs for younger riders are a lot higher than they are for the R3. Performance wise the CBR500R has more torque / pulling power so probably better if you are a bigger person - but performance wise there's not much in it and the R3 is a lot more fun to ride in most situations.

CB500F probably has cheaper insurance than the CBR500R. The 471 p-twin is a torquey machine, even if the peak HP/LB ratio is less than the R3. Everywhere under peak power, the CB will feel more substantial and torquey.

When I started I went with the rc390. first day that shit came to na I went and ordered it. Thing is stupid fun. In Alberta our speed limits are 110 (63-65 ish mph) but everyone cruises at 130 (70 ish mph) and its ....okay I mean the RC is only a single thumper and it does 6500-7000 rpm on the highway at 130 in 6th, it can pass, you drop down to 4th and give it shit but it takes a few seconds. I could only ever get it up to 185 (112mph) on a good day with no head wind, it lost most of its steam once you hit 150 (95 ish mph). When you do that with something like a single cylinder that only revs to 10.5 it rattles the shit out of everything. I had to get a throttle lock because it would make my hands numb within an hour or so, runs out of gas in maybe 3 hours on the highway if your gentle. Now I'm pretty heavy at 260 but it Carried me and my girl (120 soaking wet) no problem. But at that point your lucky to hit 160 (100mph) and it's working pretty hard to stay there. If your in a city and your commute doesn't see 110 or (60mph) for very long its awesome. This thing at 70-80 (35-40mph) I'm actually pretty sure it doesn't use any gas at all. But holy fuck dude you get in those tight twisties, the amount of corner angle that things pushes you to so easily and quickly.. its ridiculous. That's why I kept it when I upgraded. They are just two complete different classes, it's like he said. It's like a miata, you're not gonna be winning too many drag races but the amount of handling for the money is not even fair in the market today. It made me the knee dragging squid I am today. Had it for 3 years almost 40xxxk (I dont know Google it mph) before I upgraded and wouldn't have done it any different.

Concentrate on getting yourself some kind of part time job first would be my advice. It's not easy but it will be far more rewarding to you in the long term.

Buy a bike yourself. You are not going to convince a parent that does not support riding bikes to do it. My father threw away one of my bikes when I left. If you are still 16 then you dont need to be on the highway on a motorcycle yet anyway. Get your bike when you can buy it.

I watched your video. I'm shopping for a beginner's bike. I have looked at a Harley Street 500, The Honda Rebel 500, The Kawasaki Ninja 500, And now I'm checking out the Yamaha. A little history i haven't rode anything since 87. Can the R3 do interstate speeds our speed is 70mph for long periods of time. KC is about a hour away and Leavenworth KS is about 45 mins. Should i go with a 300 or a 500. I would love to hear your opinion. And to be honest when it comes to sport type bikes i like the Yamaha the best. But does Yamaha make a 500? I have been looking on line..

I was researching bikes to buy for my first bike. Quite a few sources recommended this one or the Honda CB300F, but I prefer the looks of this one. The only problem I'm worried about with riding a motorcycle is that I'm 5'4" and am afraid I won't be able to reach the ground comfortably.

I’ve been debating for a while now, on exactly what starter bike I should look into. I’ve rode (and took my riding test) on a Harley 500. Rode the 750, as well as the 883. Those all seemed okay for cruisers but I’m honestly not a fan of the saddle style riding. I’ve test fitted a duke 390 and RC390 and they were okay but still not ideal. Rode a buddies 250 ninja a while back and it was alright but just seemed to small for me some how. The r3 and honda equivalent(forget the actual model at the moment.😂) is what mostly seemed to be my fit, but I didn’t actually know how well they would ride. I assumed some how they would be like the older ninjas and just be dogs. But after watching your video, I’m convinced the r3 is more than enough for me.! It has the right size as well as power from the looks of it.(despite everyone saying “you’ll outgrow it and will want something bigger” I beg to differ. All my life I’ve found myself content with whatever it was that I was driving, and know myself enough that I’ll be the same way about riding. I’m not in it for the top speeds or super quick acceleration. I’m in it for the drive or ride itself.

Serious advice guys... I'm 5'6, 170lbs. Never ridden a bike before and strongly thinking about taking the plunge. Which bike would be the best (obvi I would look for a used model): R3, Ninja 300/400, or CBR500R?

A Dream from an older rider, you bet I bought the r3 in 15. Nothing beats a small displacement sport, for the nimble ness of the bike. For learning, it could be a blast and you will prob end up a much better rider. You just have to learn the gears and power band and understand the bike is fun 7-10k rpms but under 5k super easily to learn and forgiving . The adult answer, you need to sit on all of them and see what feels best, and take a rider course please. One thing you will learn. Experienced sport riders tend to appreciate these little bikes for a reason. They are fun, I still smile and laugh on these little guys. Throttle is like a light switch on and off lol (r6 throttle tube mod a must, later). And god my back is so much happier vs when I get off the r6. 5’6 prob still flat foot the r3 I’m 5’10 knees bent and over 200 lbs with gear. Also take in where you live. R3 is awesome urban bike in traffic, and No the r3 has no problems on highways running 80,90,100 mph. Off the line faster then a 5.0 mustang to 60, then game over. And I’ve ridden it many times with friends on liters, and 600’s. Passing power over 85-90 is like a Honda Civic tho, so you will be planning moves more. I’ve always been a Yamaha guy, and it’s the only small displacement with the 25,000 mile valve adjustment.. will save you some money. Good luck

Matt Thanks for the info! I'm hotly anticipating the Kawasaki 400. Im def going to take the basic rider courses soon and head to the dealers to test out all the 300-500cc bikes. My plan is like you said, to pretty much learn how to be a smarter/skilled rider and then possibly upgrade to an R1 or something when I feel I'm good (maybe 1-2yrs).
@Raptor-kc9vh7 жыл бұрын
good deal . all the stuff on the market seems pretty good nowadays, def a great time for new riders so many great options. * and honest, i wouldn't rush the 400 (unless its the same or close $$ wise to the r3 or even Honda 500), specs barely are above the 321 r3 / and odds are price wise, might as well buy the kawi 650. Just have to watch that throttle little more while learning. food for thought. good luck

I bought down in size but changed pipe, seat, windscreen, tires, and many other items, but adding luggage really makes this an excellent sport touring bike for the people 5' 9" or smaller. I've traveled 350 miles per day with no problem. However, you mentioned the Dragon's Tail, and that road is the death of many a rider and passenger. I would never recommend a rider to go there.

that bike can break the speed limit in less than 10 seconds and it can power wheelie in first gear. You must be very heavy (for the bike) if you can't pull the front end up without the clutch. I myself I'm 18 years old and weight just under 160lbs

Ok so say it does not power wheelie can it not still break the speed limit in 10 seconds and be dangerous for a teenager?! In the Uk they are only allowed 125cc for their a1 license and have to do a cbt test after 3 years just to get a 47hp bike! I ride a 2007 ex250 and it can already break the speed limit on regular roads in 3rd gear. If anything a teenager like myself should be on a 250cc and below because you seen my generation? We are full of testosterone and popularity. My friend was so scared of his image on a 250 he bought a used 600cc honda.... My generation is to stupid and these new bikes is just going to expand that!

Another thing, if you have to ride on the limit to enjoy riding then you are asking for serious trouble....a 300 is clearly at ur very near the lower limit for acceptable street power. The brakes are at best "serviceable". Sorry but the R3s handling is not "quick". It is average for beginning to average riders. You may think that it is quick but that depends entirely on how well you know how to steer a bike and what you compare it to. Don't forget that quick and easy are two different things and it is all speed-dependent. Quick is one thing quicker another. But the main thing here is having to corner it like an idiot to make up for the lack of power. Isn't it obvious that routinely cornering a bike at high lean angles on the street is dangerous? Even if the R3 does have a slight advantage in peak G over an R1S say is it not obvious that with 8x the power and 50lbs more weight the R1S can easily catch a 300 between corners? So your argument depends on not having any straights and riding all the corners and braking at the limit all the time? How is that more fun on a 300 than on any other bike? Oh yeah: because it is so easy to turn and will never wreck in turns😁 The real-world advantages that 300s have are cost, range per tank and riding time per tank. They are like renting a tool-shed to live in and living on Ramen noodles. Not being satisfied with a max of 30hp on a 400lb bike is not a sign of being unable to be happy on any bike. It is a sign of simply being bored with 300 levels of power and acceleration. Ignoring the safety risk of riding a bike that can barely get out of its own way. If you point out that 110 mph and 14 sec quarters are nothing to a literbike or even a 750 then 300 fans declare such performance to be both unnecessary and dangerous...thereby exposing their hypocrisy. To 30p fans the bike is "just right" but they cannot accept the fact that most experienced sportbike riders simply disagree. Eventually there will be more riders with experience on 300s than not and many of the sportbike crowd will stop riding altogether. People change but everyone with riding experience knows what they like and need and very few experienced rides like to see people playing at or near the limit on public roads regardless of their vehicle. On a track the issue is simply no contest, likewise in bad weather. The 300s shine in the long-distance entry-level commuter realm of the bike market. But that same market is overwhelmingly dominated by 4 wheeled vehicles. On the other hand 300s like the 250s before them are so cheap that the probably will always be the biggest sellers by percentage. But that simply does not make them the best for street-riding. It just means they are very stylish economical and efficient in the limited transportation niche in which bikes reside. Not everyone needs a Porsche. But that does not make the desire for a Porsche the sign of someone who would get bored with anything.The And in no way is riding a motorcycle an example of a safety-conscious motorist. It is sad to see 300 fans try to stand on both sides of the car-bike divide as justification to own and ride a 300 not a car or a literbike. A great example of cherry-picking the facts, even twisting the facts, to justify their position. And let's face it if you can't afford a faster bike or a car even it is slower, but you really want one, that sort of mental gymnastics is a regular thing in your head. Not a good indicator of your ability to ride safely.
