The 1999 Yellow Submarine Songtrack was the first Beatles material to be remixed from scratch. It was engineered by Abbey Road's then senior engineer, Peter Cobbin before Giles Martin came onto the scene. Widely regarded as being superior to the recent remixes, we find out how it's sound stand up 23 years later. We also compare the 'Sgt Pepper' remixes on this album with Giles Martin's 2017 effort and look forward to what the next remix project might be.

Well done Andrew, yet again. Your video intros are becoming almost as enjoyable as the content itself! This was your best one, yet. You've really stepped up the overall presentation. At this rate, soon you'll be doing hour-long documentary-style "deep dives" into various subjects that would truly benefit from an in-depth discussion of the type that you would excel at, and we would all benefit from. Wait.... did I just give you a great idea? haha. I couldn't help but take note of your comment about Apple providing you license to play Beatles tracks, or at the very least, snippets to help with pressing/mixing comparisons of various tracks and albums. It got me wondering if this was said offhandedly in jest, or if you've actually taken steps to see if this is possible! It would be pretty cool if they did. I'm sure you know that you can play short, 5-6 second-long bits without triggering the copyright police. But of course, it would be preferable to have Apple's blessing.

@@MarkMikelVideos I have a bootleg CD called anthem allergy which is a single desk with all the rare Beatles that unofficially released.It has the longer version of a talk too much I like the longer version it’s too bad that George Martin didn’t include the full version of it all too much because there is a third verse missing for the last birth missing plus the different lyrics in the chorus. In the lyrics after George Harrison sings show me that I’m everywhere and get me home for tea. The lyrics are it’s all too much for me to see there’s plenty there for everybody the more you give the more you get the more it is and it’s too much and then you hear the last verse of the song which is only available in the film what is interesting is in the film yellow submarine you only get to hear the first verse of us all too much and then the last verse that was edited out. It would be great to hear the fuller version of it all too much even without the fade out because you get to hear the music go crazy at the end I think Dallas Martin should have all the Beatles albums with no fade out so that way you can hear the music either continuing to be played or even some notes that you can hear like a torn out and stuff.

I think the album is the best sounding in the Beatles catalogue, warm and rich and has a wonderful seperation of sound. I'm convinced Eleanor Rigby is the way it is to seperate out the track and allow the vocals and strings to breath, rather than sounding out of sync, it instead just sounds imposing and triumphal. With the vocals at last moved to centre as well, it's a massive improvement on all previous stereo mixes and for me the standout remix on Yellow Sub Songtrack, all of which are superb.

since this album came out, I had no intention of buying it. I figured I already had all these songs, there was really no reason. But since watching this video when it first came out, I put buying it on my list. Took me a long time, but I eventually picked up a copy yesterday. I popped the CD into my car stereo, and my jaw hit the floor from the very start. The vocals for one are incredibly clear, not at all buried into the mix, and it's an absolute revelation. I'm amazed that with all the technology Giles Martin currently has that this was made without any of that tech. Just amazing, and very worth having. I believe the next remixes will be the 60th Anniversary of Please Please Me and With the Beatles in 2023. It's time for those early albums to receive proper stereo mixes. Giles Martin was also very impressed at Peter Jackson's software that would allow them to completely separate voices and instruments on an audio track. That exactly what they need to do remixes of the early 2 and 4 track recordings. The Beatles didn't do a bunch of outtakes, orvextra tracks back then, so I doubt there will be any deluxe editions? The Beatles also released 2 albums a year, and singles throughout the year, so they might just release the remixed albums together? Those first 7 albums are the ones that could benefit most from a true stereo remix. I hope it starts with those first 2 next year?

@@markboulton954 Yeah, they did several takes of each song, and tried different things on some songs for those first 2 albums, but nothing like the amount of outtakes they would have on albums a little later. Most of the outtakes from the first sessions are just takes of the same songs that made it on the album. Takes with false starts, mistakes, and stuff like that. We got some of that on the anthology albums. But, I like that kind of stuff. If they have enough material from the Please Please Me sessions to give us a deluxe edition of the album I will gladly purchase it. I figured they would be more likely to release the first 2 albums from 1963 together? Have both albums with new stereo mixes, and whatever decent extra material as a bonus.

I don't know how much can really be done with those twin-track recordings. And I'm in the minority that actually love those wide early mixes, especially Please Please Me. The ambiance from the mic leakage really enhances the sound (interestingly, George Martin hated it and his "remixes" for the Rock 'n' Roll Music comp were attempts at getting rid of it). For me, the best thing that can be done with those albums is proper mastering with no extra compression applied. Let those mixes breathe. The remaining four-track albums that haven't been remixed (other than Help! and Rubber Soul in 1987) would be far more interesting to me. Beatles For Sale doesn't need it, though. IMO, it's the best stereo Beatles album mix.

The whole Yellow Submarine project was a masterpiece and again showed how The Beatles were a center of creative gravity - bringing together just the right people in every area. Amazing too how it was done so quickly. I saw it first run in a packed theatre and the people were reacting with emotions (reminiscent of Beatlemania) as I'd ever experienced at a film.

I absolutely love the remix of "Yellow Submarine" by Peter Cobbin the best! The presence and Dynamic Range just blows me away! Although I like what Giles Martin did with "Sgt Peppers", "The White Album" and "Abbey Road", I would love to see what Peter Cobbin would have done with these three Beatle releases. What Peter Cobbin did with "Yellow Submarine" is basically magic, never in my life would I've believed such an improvement of sound quality from an older recording as he managed to pull from these Beatle classics. Still today, when ever I listen to Peter Cobbin's "Yellow Submarine", I'm still blown away by it's magical sound, Martin's work is good but me not nearly as impressive as Cobbin's creative mastering!

I far prefer these Songtrack mixes to anything else remixed by G. Martin. Notice they were remixed from scratch. No instrument isolation via Peter Jackson. You gain so much more dynamic range by using the Cobbins method. It takes longer, probably costs more, but the results are clearly superior.

I find it very disappointing that they are so downright vindictive in their over-zealous punitive actions against content creators who use so much as a few seconds of Beatles material in videos which should unquestionably be covered by "fair use" for educational purposes. The DVD is horrible. They re-recorded the score (lousy), they removed multiple sound effect elements that made a difference, and the look of it is so digital and lifeless. Hi Andrew - well done as usual! It is worth noting that this is not the only Beatles (or more correctly Beatles-adjacent) remix project Peter Cobbin was associated with. He also did the 2000-era remixes of some of the John Lennon catalog under the supervision of Yoko Ono. They're slightly out of favor now, after the 2010 re-masterings and subsequent "Ultimate Mixes", but I remember how clear sounding the remix of John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band was, and the true stereo mixing of all of the Imagine album. He's also credited with the Mind Games and Rock & Roll remixes - which I still need to track down. As for the Yellow Submarine Songtrack, I remember getting the CD and being blown away by the clarity of the instruments. Using the pre-bounce elements of the tracks made a big difference to me. There's an article in Mix Magazine where Peter describes how careful he was to use as much of the Abbey Road original tech - echo chambers, Fairchild limiters, etc. - as possible to keep it sounding accurate. I still enjoy this album today!

I think the reason a lot of pre-Revolver albums are getting snubbed from remixes are mostly since they have way less to work with. From what I've seen with the remixes on this album and the Beatles Rock Band stems, a lot of the multi-tracks for Rubber Soul break down to "Track 1 - Lead Vocals, Track 2 - Vocal Harmony Overdubs, Track 3 - Instrument Overdubs, usually solos or smaller embellishments, Track 4 - Everything Else' So for mixing the multi-tracks as is, the most you can do is center the backing track, and split the vocal harmonies between the left and right ear, like what was done on this album. A lot better then the existing mixes, but nothing too flashy. Though it seems for the Sgt. Pepper 50th remix, they pulled some tricks to break up instruments recorded on the same track, like I know Fixing A Hole's Harpsichord and Drums are on the same track, and that was panned left, but they did something to expand that for the right channel, not sure if it was echo of those instruments from another track or some process to create that. There are ways to digitally isolate instruments, and the efforts for Get Back seem to be a huge improvement from past attempts on The Beatles Rock Band, but it will always come with some quality loss.

@@vittoriosommese Yeah, there was definitely some more layers for Sgt Pepper, though some a lot of the songs still have multiple instruments recorded on one track from the first recording. Like the first title track, the 2 rhythm guitars and drums are all on the same track. Bass is on another, the lead guitar and horns were recorded on another day. There is no clean tape of just the isolated drums for Sgt. Pepper.

They create remixes today by digitally synching up various tracks to create a new multitrack. For example, the single version of "Help!" could be mixed into stereo by taking the vocals from the 3-track master and the instruments from the 4-track master that was used to produce the stereo LP version. That is, of course, if the 3-track still exists.
@larryinc64
@larryinc64 2 жыл бұрын
@QuadRaSphere Records and Radio Well the reason I'd want a modern stereo remix like the other albums got, was so an album like Rubber Soul does not have all of the instruments in one ear. I was born in the mid 90s, I prefer stereo music over mono, and a majority of the Beatles catalogue's stereo mixes are not great to listen to with headphones. For the first 2-3 albums or so, there are only really the 2 track masters to mix from, so your mixing options are limited, but from Revolver and up the multi-track tapes can be much better arranged.

The fundamental problem with Beatles albums from Help onwards in particular is that the instruments were not stereo recorded, so wherever you pan them in the mix they basically remain mono. I'm not sure what Peter Cobbin did to achieve it but if you listen to LSD he creates an artificial stereo effect on the Lowrey organ that opens the song and it improves the sound for sure. Giles Martin is aware of this mono problem also and did a good job creating artificial stereo on the guitar on Dear Prudence, but didn't do so well on the piano on Martha My Dear which is a bit of a mess. Incidentally, Cobbin also adds that flange effect (or whatever it's called) on John's voice so he had a bit more licence than you suggest. I completely concur with what you say about Ringo's drums on With A Little Help. Very amateurish. I didn't think separating the guitar solos on The End was good idea, either. The point is surely that they blend into one.

Great video as always Andrew! I remember getting this cd when it came out and listening to it through my headphones. I was blown away! It was like hearing those songs for the first time all over again. My favourites were 'Nowhere Man' (the spacing out of the vocals was amazing), 'Hey Bulldog' (very punchy and the vocals were no longer buried) and 'All You Need Is Love' (almost a religious experience...simply gorgeous). The biggest flaw I noticed was one you didn't mention. Going into the final fadeout chorus in 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds' where it is supposed to be nice and loud and in your face it feels weak, almost like he pulled the volume back a bit after the three drum hits. Where I expect a 'YES!' experience I get a 'meh'....I noticed it the very first time I heard it and it hits me every time I hear it now. Giles Martin's version seems truer overall so I prefer that version. Like you I'm hoping for and looking forward to remixes of the earlier stuff. However realistically, how much can really be done with two guitars, a bass and drums other than making them puncher. One thing that I will say....if Giles could dig down deep and find the bass drum for the early stuff that wou,d make a huge difference!

I only realised the EP was never issued when I bought the Roy Carr/Charles Shaar Murray 'Illustrated Beatles Discography' in 1976. I do wish the EP could be issued today.

Nicely done Andrew. A couple of things, first I thought the remixes themselves were very well done and it was so good to finally get Only A Northern Song in true stereo. I just wish they hadn't used the limiter switch (too make the CD louder) or noise reduction at all. IMO that made the songs sound less authentic. Since Peter Cobbin used pre-bounced tapes which barely have any tape hiss at all, the use on noise reduction was totally unnecessary but more of a fad (for lack of better word) at the time. If this ever gets reissued without the noise reduction and limiting, I'll be the first in line to grab it.

@@Parlogram There's this thing called a "volume control" which can be used to make the CD louder. To see the damage these people and corporations do to the music, just open any of the music up on any audio editor, such as Audacity (free), Adobe Audition, izotopeRX, and see how compressed and clipped the songs are. I'm staying with my mono 2009 CDs, which look and sound like proper recordings, with NO compression, NO clipping, and NO normalization between tracks.

@@cjay2 The Beatles themselves used compressors famously such as the venerable Fairchild 660 and the earlier modified Altec 436B, Abby Road's RS124. The Fairchild was pushed hard on Revolver. Prime example being the opening guitars on She Said She Said. The modern day limiting is done to the track as a whole to squash down the remaining peaks.

Hi Andrew & thanks again for another entertaining & informative post. I bought the 1999 Songtrack CD on release & was so blown away by the foghorn in YS that I dug out my 1970 stereo Oldies LP to compare & contrast, & while the foghorn is there, it's very much kinda buried in that mix - I've also listened to the original mono 1966 mix (on CD) & it's also buried - so for me, that was the amazing moment + Songtrack also works as a compilation companion (1965-68) to Oldies (1963-66) with only two songs repeated, but those songs, (YS & Rigby) are remixes. Regards the aborted YS EP, if you read The Beatles Monthly from around Apri 1968 thru to final issue in Dec '69, there are a few references to "Across The Universe" & then this 5-track EP possibly coming out, especially after they did print some criticism in Readers' Letters of having to pay full price for an LP with only four new songs. Best wishes.

Again, a very comprehensive and enlightening video, Andrew! I never knew why the proposed five track EP was shelved until now. I couldn't believe how good the Yellow Submarine Songtrack sounded when I bought it on release. For me, I would like to see Revolver receive the Giles Martin remix treatment next to correct some of the stereo separation issues on the original! My one criticism of your videos is that I wish they were longer as I enjoy them so much!

I’m in no doubt there will be special anniversary releases of all the albums as we reach each 60th anniversary. I’ll looking forward to them, no matter who produces them or what they contain. I think they could have multiple disks with one dial consisting of the non-album singles and B sides from the period.

Thanks Andrew as usual an excellent video ! one interesting thing about the original album I have always wondered about and now seems to have been explained in the video was the anomaly on the album cover notes which indicate the Yellow Submarine Soundtrack was released prior to the white album in 1968. As the Yellow Submarine Soundtrack was not released until January 1969 I have now realised that these cover notes must have been meant for the ill fated EP you spoke about which was probably should have been issued around the same time as the film in 1968 but was pulled from release and for whatever reason these notes were not re edited for the release of soundtrack album in Jan 1969. In my Beatles record collection I have an original 1969 Stereo copy of the Yellow Submarine soundtrack and also the 1987 CD release however up until I bought the Yellow Submarine Songtrack CD which I agree is a brilliant remix and the best sounding version ever (and it was an Aussie that did it!🙂) the only copy of the Yellow Submarine song I had featuring the added voices was on my original mono 1966 single released just before the Revolver LP. Thanks again Andrew I can't wait to see what else you have instore for all us lovers of all Beatle recordings in the coming weeks.

In regard to Only A Northern Song, it's even more remarkable that for the original release they used a fake stereo mix from mono rather than just the verbatim mono mix. Meaning the mono album was a fold down of that skewed mix! Very unlike the usual EMI standards for UK releases, especially for that time.

The only reason I'd want to buy the box sets is for the blu-ray discs, but I don't want to buy them for *just* the blu-rays, so I hold out hope they'll come out on their own at some point. I know that kills their "added value" but it seems a shame to confine those mixes to being a bonus. Sometimes patience pays off ... rather than pay through the nose for a Record Store Day copy of the mono mix of Pink Floyd's Piper at the Gates of Dawn, I waited ... and it was reissued last week! So hopefully my strategy works here too ... but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Another brilliant video. I loved the Songtrack when I got it on CD in 1999 for all the reasons you mention. It made me wish they'd remix the entire catalogue in a similar way. Interesting info about Peter Cobbin too, who I had paid no mind to before. I was just about to suggest you made a video about the Yellow Submarine movie itself but I heard right at the end you're intending to. I loved this film growing up, just as my 4-year old does now). I recorded it off the BBC at some point in the 80s and when it was eventually re-released on DVD (long after my VHS copy had gone) I was SURE there was more to Baby I'm A Rich Man than is in the present version of the film (as well as Paul's lost "Beatles To Battle!" line). I can find no info online on why it was re-edited this way but if anyone can shine a light on it, I'm sure you can. ;)

After listening to the original 1969 album of Yellow Submarine and falling asleep during side two I decided to make my own version with all of the songs from the film. I didn't find out until I had made a list of tracks that such an album already existed. I listened to it the next day and I thought it was excellent. The tracks didn't have the over emphasized left/right separation that was typical of late 60s album production.

Another great video. Just when I think I know all there is to know about a Beatles album you prove me wrong with your encyclopedic knowledge! I have always thought that the mixes of the songs on the Songtrack were the best versions of all of them. I agree that Revolver is probably the next album that Giles Martin will tackle, but I’m really anxious for him to do Rubber Soul, which has needed serious remixing for the longest time.

“Time for Cilla” by Cilla Black had to be the last of the 4-track EP’s in the UK in 1968. In the US major record companies has discontinued the 4-track EP’s by the early 1960’s, except the other two were “Four By The Beatles” in 1964. Others went into the “Jukebox EP” format, and it was a 7” record played at 33 1/3 RPM, and it has 5 or 6 songs with selections from their albums. Record labels did put out jukebox EP’s in the 1960’s and continued in the 1970’s, and jukebox EP’s went out in favor of promotional sample EP’s which were used by radio stations.

Top notch presentation. Apple needs to get you on board. No question. I find it so strange that EMI were not keen to issue a YS EP considering that the MMT EP had done so well in late 67. The more you explain the wheels of EMI is it no wonder that they got it wrong so many times with Beatles compilations. Outside of Klein’s brilliant concept of the Red & Blue in 73 it wasn’t until Apple became in overall control that the product and concepts went to the toppermost of the poppermost where they belonged especially where compilations were concerned. IMO Hey Bulldog always belonged on The White album. FYI When the Let It Be movie was released at the cinemas in summer 70, Yellow Submarine ran with it too as a double feature (as was more common then) it was at one of these screenings that Lennon sneaked into a cinema and watched the whole double feature. Once again Andrew, really excellent work😎👌

I had all the 1969 Yellow Submarine tracks on other albums such as Yellow Submarine and Eleanor Rigby (Revolver LP), All You Need Is Love (Magical Mystery Tour and 1967-70 Blue LP). The only tracks original to the 1969 album were 'Only A Northern Song,' 'All Together Now,' Hey Bulldog,' and 'It's All To Much.' Of the new tracks, 'Hey Bulldog' and 'It's All Too Much' were the stand out tracks. I don't believe I ever played the second side of the 1969 album more than once although 'Yellow Submarine In Pepperland' had a particular charm. In 1999 I bought the Yellow Submarine Songbook DVD Film and CD on the very same day. (I cannot remember if they were both included in the same package as with 1+). The high quality of the sound was the first thing that struck me and it was my hope that this trend would continue with future Beatles releases.

I hope they do Revolver next. Personally, I didn't think the original stereo mix of Revolver sounded that great. A lot of the tracks were bass heavy and even distorted in some areas. (Though I think the 2009 Remaster sounded the best.) If they don't do that, then my next pick would be the first 2 albums. Hopefully, Giles will put the demix technology to good use and finally provide us with a satisfactory stereo mix of the 1963 albums.

Excellent as always. And thorough: I wondered if you would cover the sync issue on Rigby, and you certainly did. I agree on all points. I remember being especially pleased at the restoration of ‘a life of ease.’ The ‘media-friendly’ part of Giles Martin’s name is especially pertinent; almost nobody ever mentions Sam Okell, who has been coproducing the remixes and whom I suspect may be more hands-on than Giles. For my own enjoyment, I’ve made my own mono version of the 1969 soundtrack, substituting my own high-res needle drops of the songs from the 2014 mono LP box for side 1, including those great mixes originally planned for the abandoned EP, and then folding down side 2 from my own stereo copy. It’s a satisfying substitute.

While I'd never want to part with the original mixes, the remixed 1999 Yellow Submarine is amazing. I got the CD when it was 1st released and was blown away by how good the vocals and instruments sounded! The separation of the instruments on the, then, "modern" sound stage allows so many other buried sounds to now be heard. Hearing the various harmonics on the chime in "When I'm Sixty-Four" (especially in the 5.1 mix for the DVD) is what I showcase to show others why this is such a great remix. ••• After this remix came out, I was hoping that all of the catalog would be re-done like this (or at least as much of the catalog that could be remixed like this). Unfortunately, that didn't happen. From what I've heard, the Giles Martin remixes are not treated with the same approach and are not to my liking.

Another great video Andrew. After A/B'ing the Peter Cobben and Giles Martin mixes I have to agree with you and tend to prefer the former. The less heavy low end allows the songs to breathe more in most cases (though the drums on Think For Yourself could perhaps do with a little more 'punch') . It also seem more in tune with the mono mixes.
