LiN76 really shines on the bass tracks

I love my ART transy, it is a very nice unit that is clean and well built, all the compression of an revision-H 1178 without the distortion associated with the older Urei design. If you want a unique compressor check out the ART dual limiter, it is a PWM compressor like the PI comps from the 70s, and don't let the price fool you it is a unique unit that has no equivalent at its price point and is one of only about 5 PWM compressors ever released in hardware form. ( the Pi, great river, MXR, stc-8 and the lesso)

ART generally offers very good value. PWM (pulse width modulation for those wondering) compressors are very rare and the ART Dual Limiter is a well built unit plus the price is almost unthinkably reasonable. I have heard that a number of the employees founding ART were from MXR…I can’t confirm but it would seem to make sense.

In this case I actually like the pair of LIN76s better than the UAD. They give the drum and bass tracks some serious aggression! The ART was a distant third for me. Thanks for the vid.

Glad you enjoyed the vid and thanks for sharing what you heard! I have found the LIN76 to be more versatile than I expected, aggressive when you push them but under control when you back off a bit. Nice to have a few different 76 revs in the rack, but for the price Lindell has come up with a very usable all-rounder imo.

The Lin seemed to really emphasize the room with an almost ambient verb/short delay like result. Drums by themselves, I liked it a lot but in the full mix it actually made the drums lose a little cohesion because I was hearing so much of an almost panned effect, the kick and snare were no longer holding down the center.

Lindell's were out of phase, easy left or right phase swap in the daw to remove the issue !

Ive already got the ART Transy thanks...for doing this shoot out definately not swaping out for UAD or LIN76, they sound "OK" but ART is deifinately a More High End, Punchy gluey vibe....oh yes....keeping my art I think im going to get a PRO VLA for Vocals, Guitar, Keys and Synths.......

Glad you found the shootout helpful. The VLA is another piece from ART the has a “quiet” but broad following for good reasons imo. (BTW, keys/synths can be really nice on the VLA.)

So is the TransY a keeper? I feel like in this demonstration, it really got blown out of the water by the LIN76. I was gonna get the ART in hopes of getting two channels for the price of the LIN76. From this vid i feel that would be a mistake. Do you have an opinion or insight I might not have?

I do use both, but for different sources. The LIN76 have the ability to be more aggressive and impart more character when pushed imo. The TransY is more laid back but has proven to be very reliable on vocals. I would say that imo the TransY is “replaceable” with plugins in the mix whereas the LIN76 has that analog impact that is so difficult to reproduce with a plugin. My LIN76s get used on every mix I do as well as for tracking because they add something I cannot duplicate with plugins. I tend to look at hardware as a long term game, and with plugins being very usable, I like to add hardware that has the most impact first and then over time fill in the “nice to haves” but lower impact pieces.

Great video. I didn’t know the 1176 could be used for drum bus. I had thought the 1176 was primarily a snare and kick thing.

Glad you enjoyed it. The 1176 is a versatile compressor, great on vocals and for voiceover as well. On a drum bus (and any stereo bus) I like to use a pair for more control over the dynamics over panned sources. Like many, my default is to use them on kick and snare, but I wanted to show something that doesn’t get as much discussion in this video.

For me transy and the ua plugin sound best, the low frequencies on the lin76 sounds weird, like out of place, maybe the pan 🤷‍♂️

If you really wanna go analog these days ... F.M.R's and overstayer's all day.. but I have to say.. Logic PRO X stock stuff is (IMO) straight up better. Of course it helps if you used analog stuff for a long time. If you know what you're doing, you can get the sound of any REV (A, B, D, F) of the 1176 ... the SSL on the bus also rocks.
