My observation is, that apps not optimised for M1 tend to use 2-4x more RAM that M1 optimised, there fore causing more RAM swapping. I have Mac mini M1 16Gb/512Gb, I am using it as a Web bot (1.5/1.5Tb upload/download traffic/monthly generated). Previously was using Python 3.8 +Selenium via Firefox (21 parallel browser sessions, around 1Gb of RAM each). It was running Python via Rosetta 2, even Firefox was native, when launched from Python, it was also running via Rosetta, and it generated over 2Tb/month written to SSD. Now, when in mid Feb Apple Silicon optimised version of Python was released, I switched to Python 3.9.2 +Selenium via Chrome, now all runs native on M1 (each browser session takes about 200-250Mb of RAM), and no RAM swapping any more, and during last 2 weeks around 250Gb written to SSD. Means, 4x less than with previous version of Python via Rosetta 2. So, I think more apps becomes optimised, this problem will disappear

This makes a lot of sense. Just off the top of my head, knowing little/nothing about Rosetta 2, except that it translates x86 Mac code into M1 code, dynamically, in real time, if it works similar to a just in time, type compiler, for a given app, it may have to keep the original x86 code in memory, plus the just-in-time translated M1 code in memory, plus additional data structures, such as lookup tables, to handle mappings and translations. So that if the x86 code needs to branch to certain address, Rosetta 2 would need to store that address as well as the corresponding address for the M1 version, in memory. So, original x86 code + real time translated M1 code + Rosetta 2 data structures to facilitate the dynamic mappings and translations, in real time, would explain the 2-4 times more RAM requirement identified by @Atvars Grinins. And if you have multiple Rosetta 2 apps running in memory, what previously had fit comfortably within a 16 gigabyte memory space may now no longer fit, in which case, you start getting swapping.. And, personally, I am not a fan of swapping. Back in the days of hard drives, whenever my Linux system started swapping to disk, performance usually went down to unusable levels, so much so that I was usually better off simply disabling swapping and keeping the number of concurrent apps below a certain threshold.. One simple test/experiment that M1 users may want to try is to simply disable swapping and see what happens. Obviously there will be a lower limit on the number of concurrent apps that they can run, but it would be interesting to see what this concurrent apps limit is, whether it is in the 5-10 range or higher/lower. Also, if they disable swap, and the SSD disk writes attenuate significantly, even with equivalent app usage, that would be a smoking gun..

If the arm mac lineup offers slotted/replaceable ram and ssd, I will buy them no doubt. For some people who believed that ARM chips really require different ram type and different storage type... It's a myth. As an example, a low-end chromebook has a phone-like lpddr4, and phone-like eMMc storage, and it has an x86 processor. And vice versa, an ARM server exists with full size ddr4 ECC slots on its side. And surely Tons of SSDs connected through a full-size PCIe.

@projectcalmofficial3 жыл бұрын
I'm getting worried because my 16 GB RAM M1 Air loves to use swap memory a lot too! I don't even know why, it looks like a mistake in a whole strategy of using swap. It just likes to keep background processes in swap memory even when I'm doing almost nothing or doing basic tasks like web-browsing and watching videos. It currently uses 976,5 MB of swap and the only thing I have opened now is safari with only one tab which is this video. I'm just asking myself and Apple why the hell would I buy the more expensive 16 GB model to have this issue. And smartctl says the amount of read and written data is 42,7 TB and 6,07 TB respectively (I've been using this MacBook for 2,5 months, it's not a big deal yet, but I'm scared. The exact model is M1 MBA, 8C GPU, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD).

Techkhamun, thank you for a lot of knowledge from your channel. You're doing a great job. If someone is interested, I hope to temporarily fix the macbook m1 memory swap problem when using Lightroom Classic. I checked at home, before this step the memory conversion usage was absurdly high, reaching 10 GB at the very start of Lightroom Classic. Any edition and export was the amount of about 30 GB for one photo, it is easy to count how much data is saved for the photographer. In one day, when I edited a dozen photos, almost 1TB of data was saved for several hours. For me it helped disabling GPU support in Lightroom Classic settings. I have tested and the editing speed has not suffered, it is just as convenient to edit photos. Export is just as fast. But nothing goes into SWAP memory, which is satisfying to me. All parameters and temperature in the activity tracker are good. I hope Adobe will fix this problem. For now, this is how I will use Lightroom Classic.

getting 16gb will be cheaper and provide a better overall benefit than getting extra ssd storage. You can always grab an external ssd or even an external hdd and have files wrote to that, saving wear on the Macs ssd. 16GB of RAM will use less swap, no matter what size storage you have. Please note though, that some apps, mainly ones that use Rosetta to work on M1 instead of being natively supported, will use lots of memory. Basically, using legacy apps on your M1 can cause heavy swap use. Limit your use of legacy apps, if you can, they will be updated to native support soon anyway. Apple can fix this with a software update but at this time its unknown when they will do it, or if they will at all. They may leave it to the app developers.

I see sometimes higher #of bytes written (in resource monitor) also during browsing (safari). But thinking that Mac SSD''s have a 10x times higher TBW than Samsung EVO is ridiculous. I checked my MBP 2017 13.3 (128GB SSD) and has 3.4TB writen in 3 years (and 4% used). The SSD issues must be a big sur issue for sure ... On the 3M1 i do only browsing, O365, and affinity photo. I don't still don't get it why the hell people buy 8gb and 256 gb for photo and video editing? don't you guys search before buying? literally any editing software recommendations are 16gb of RAM or more. secondly, 256 gb ssd nowadays is barely enough for OS, Softwares, private videos and photos and very light games and you still use it for 4k video editing? that must be dumb. Apple must have thought well about it how to force people change their macs every 3-4 years since old ones were very well upgradeable.
@Maximara3 жыл бұрын
These are the numbers the tool being used give us as explained at 4:05 . If 1% is 15.7 TB then 100% would be 1570 TB (15.7 * 100). One can hem an haw all they like but that is where the numbers lead. Also Apple allows booting from external SSD so this "force people to change their Macs every 3-4 years" idea is nonsense on par with Trump had the election stolen from him. JUST BOOT UP FROM AN EXTERNAL SSD. How freaking hard is it to understand that basic fact?!?

Apples ssd's are made from the same silicon/chips that everyone else in the industry uses, they aren't created or manufactured by apple. And apple hasn't told anyone what chips their using, or if its slc, TLC, mlc, or qlc. Your tbwf numbers are meaningless without that information, because each different cell type has a different life span.

WTF was he doing with his mac? I download GBs of data and use almost 24/4 my SSDs. Out of 5 internal SSDs, the only one that has less than 100% health, has 99% and that is over a year plus of heavy daily usage. (not mac) I can't figure out what he used his SSD for to write so many in such small time. Still, if the new macOS burns GBs of data for "swap" memory and that is behind it, that's just not necessarily a fault, but planned obsolescence. If true. I can't see the numbers mentioned make any sense. There is also no way the 256GB drive has 1400TBW. No way. ZERO chance.
@lasarith23 жыл бұрын
Apparently back in 2015/16 there was a test of SSD to destruction, (Search 256GB SSD test to destruction) a 256 GB SSD with 72TBW guarantee got to 600 TBW fine then stated having problems up to 728TBW and then went nope no more data for me , and others got to 1.1PB, (capacity of drive not mentioned) and today’s SSD are even more reliable then then , according to the reports, and after a bit of checking myself I’d say a 256GB SSD with a grantee of 150 -300TBW will have 600-1200 TBW before starting to show errors, so 1400TBW while is a bit iffy, but probably not out the realm of doable , but I wouldn’t trust it past that point .

@@lasarith2 not necessarily true, original sad chips were sold, rated around 5 or 600 writes per cell. Since then we've gotten TLC, mlc, and qlc variants, they are cheaper to make, but have a lower write endurance. They could create larger capacity chips with the newer cell types, but gave up endurance to be able to release larger sized drives at a lower cost. Just like the M1 soc, you gave up upgradeability for lower latency and more swapping thanks to the shared/unified memory. You lost the ability to add memory, replace the ssd, upgrade to a faster CPU or gpu. You want any of those upgrades, you have to buy a replacement machine.
