Love it Bear, spot on mate! I am a dirty, filthy story gamer as well. But I also like certain mechanics, and I like rolling dice for the element of chance, which adds to the story when I role-play whatever the outcome may be, and makes me an even dirtier, filthier story gamer. 😁🤘

I'm interested in your style of play and would love a video where you demonstrate how you make a campaign and how you run it

As you know, I very much enjoy detailed mechanics that are consistent and make sense, to me. However, I really do enjoy your ability to tell a story and make the game about letting us help tell it. I wish you had a similar love for mechanics as well but you don't. So be it. Game on brother.

I think back in the day (I think I started in 1980), there was narrative but it was more organic, meaning you might not spend a bunch of time creating a backstory and trying to play to that back story. Instead you would roll you character up and just play and he character concept would come out of how you played the character and what happened to him during game play. So in a sense you started off as someone of a blank slate and your character developed into something over time. This style may have had to do with how deadly the game was back then so maybe inventing a back story up front was kind of a waste of time.

I would reccomend everyone would read or reread "The Art of War". When evil walks the land as it does today remember it walks everywhere.

Yep. Your way is the wrong way, my way is the right way to play D&D! Lol...the right way to play D&D is the way that leads people to say "yeah!" when the BBEG dies or actually have emotions when an npc dies. The wrong way is everyone is bored and looking at their phones.

Bear why don’t you just use the Heroic rules for Fantasy? I’ve used the HERO system for decades and find no reason to buy game upon game when the rules work fine just as they always have. Utilizing a rule system that is applicable to various genres helps immensely.

@@bearthegenxgm Well you’ll have to forgive me as I’m just here to watch some gaming….I subconsciously tune out with all these endless discussions 😬 Three Heroic games ended abruptly as well as three fantasy games…now all I see are meetings…let’s put some “meat” back on the menu please.

Well you'll be happy to know that some of the games are returning, including session 2 of BareBones Fantasy tomorrow, HEROIC picks up again on Friday, and there's a couple more on the horizon, so stay turned. :)

I absolutely disagree. Yes, playing is a private group experience, and as all private matters, it does not concern anybody outside the people involved. But if we step on public platforms, with public discourses, there must be some order, some value judgement , some common principle, some shared experience, some common ground. If not, entropy is the result. There is an entire videogame industry that caters to gamers. There will be nobody around to complain about tic, tac, toe liveplays, because they will be busy playing videogames. The entire hobby struggles to keep up in originality with videogames, and even though it was the point of inspiration and the higher intellectual hobby, all it produces now are combinations of old systems with heavy videogame influence. And about storytelling, there are very few 4 people at the table that can outshine a team of 100+ developers and provide more setup for individual agency than the current AI systems and the large community in videogames. People that will remain in the hobby, if no value judgment is allowed , are people that should be in real therapeutic roleplaying sessions. .
