I think it was more than Charles and Catherine. The Queen denied M the tiara she wanted and told them no half in and half out. The Queen died of bone cancer which was said to be very painful. I'm halfway through the reading. M has a long history of reacting in the moment, never thinking through the potential consequences of her actions. The comment Charles made about Catherine probably triggered her to extreme anger. In the king's defense, he welcomed M with open arms, paid for her (third) wedding and walked her down the aisle. I don't think he was insincere. She is the one who damaged their relationship. She is the one who chose to move far away, do damaging interviews, and limit contact. This estrangement is her choice only. It never had to be this way. They could have left on good terms, but she wanted to get revenge. Now they are struggling with finances, are unemployed and the new business venture looks to be their latest failure. They have been begging to come back, but that's clearly not going to happen, which feeds her anger.
