IMO Restomods are more exciting than most new cars from mainstream manufacturers...

Only because they are not available from them. The business model of buying into a club and sending the same car back again and again was what Lamborghini did in the 60's with the Miura. Finding a non S or SV or matching numbers car is hard. You have the current formula with Pagani, Konigsegg where they have sold out of new cars. But you can buy an old one and have new bits fitted to an older model. Porsche/Ferrari/Aston have yet to do it, but Porsche could buy Singer and offer it in house.

I think the restomod thing being so big is due to the fact that a lot of modern cars aren't as good to look at as the older cars but the older cars are frankly crap now. So as we have the tech to match the looks of old to the abilities of the new it is popular. Plus the people who wanted the car 40 years ago and couldn't afford it are now wealthy and want to get their dream but they want it to work like a modern sports car.

I feel that the Tuthill is actually decently priced. I know that it is vastly different from the original 911 GT1 / Straßenversion but there's no way you can really drive and enjoy the real thing with peace of mind unless you're that guy who owns *_The Collection One_* from Bahrain. Tuthill said that enough molds to rebuild the car if an owner were to crash it. It'll also be quite reasonable in terms of maintenance costs considering it's based on the 993 911 which were fairly reliable cars. It's also like 1/5th the current values of the original GT1s.

After watching your frustration with your GT3 on UK roads You should be looking at the base 987 rather than a RS60 or 986. It recreates the modern classic experience you had but with a significantly better interior for not much more money. It lets you experience a different car than your 986 which is good for the channel while keeping the character that you liked about the 986. I can guarantee that you will enjoy driving it more than your GT3 on your tight UK roads. I enjoy my 987 more than my 981 Spyder on similar roads. The 981 Boxster is absolutely a better car. It feels completely modern but loses the classic analog charm that you experienced with the 986. It doesn’t move around on the suspension the same way, it doesn’t give you the feedback in the wheel, and it’s less fun to drive on tight UK roads. The 981 feels two generations newer than the 987 and will be just another capable sports car in your garage.

An interesting point was made by Andrew Frankel asking when is a Porsche restomod no longer a Porsche? For example there was that Porsche 914 restomod recently featured on the Top Gear YT channel and they said barely any of the original car was used. So if someone buys one of those then it bursts in to flames while sat in traffic and the people inside are killed, and the headlines say "Married couple dies in Porsche fire", is that fair on Porsche to destroy their reputation because of a car they never made?
@Speednote103 ай бұрын
Is it fair on Porsche if an owner of a stock 914 installed a cheap and faulty aftermarket fuel line that led to the same outcome as your example? I think you'll find that all the actual real world positive PR that a restomod gives to the OEM manufacturer heavily outweighs some extreme hypothetical situation that has an incredibly low chance of ever happening.

My biggest gripe is that restomods are now becoming as ludicrous as the modern cars they sought to replace. This Tuthill is a prime example. Restomods used to be about discreet subtle modern improvement (brakes, tyres, engine etc, ) of an older car. Now they are basically hand made, overly engineered, bespoke, silhouette racecars...

Perhaps restomods are booming based off customers with large amounts of money to toss around - and don’t see the need for cars with 700-1,000HP like most of the manufacturers are creating
I think Gunther Werks and Singer sell every single one of their restomods and they can't fill the demand. So nothing wrong with them. And by the way Porsche 964 and 993 were never, ever "cheap". Especially 993. Of course they were cheap compared to the insane prices now but never literally cheap.

Lambo is keen to attack Ferrari and the new cars are created to impress. Need is not a word in the conversation, this is a pissing contest and more power is more better. Stepping away from the specs, Revuelto provides meaningul improvements to the car part of the equation relative to Aventador, interior comfort, usability, covers the tranny issue and maintains the N/A V12.
