I had one similar, But it also had a white/black diamond pattern sticky tape that wrapped around part of it,.So even the mosquitos that weremt sucked in, Landed on it and were stuck. With that being said, The propane powered the fan, It had a gauge on it, After igniting it(Pushing the ignitor button ) it would take a few minutes and you would see the gauge rise to show you it was working, At that point you would slightly hear the fan running. Problem was, It didn't always ignite the first time, You would have to close the propane, Wait a few minutes and try again...All while getting eaten alive because the mosquitos were so attracted to it and me. I would put it on the porch, Ignite it and after confirming it was ignited, Then bring it to the area I wanted to put it in that week. I would change locations weekly. It always worked great, But you have to make sure the propane ignited and confirm fan is running or you get the results you have here.

Don't quote me on this because I could be well off. My dad worked for pest control for 20 something years. From my understanding, mosquitos don't actually move around a lot but stay relatively close proximity to wher you see them buzzing at any given area. Unlike flies, gnats, beetles which move around a lot- mosquitos don't really move unless a wind carries them. During the day, they usually hide from the sun under whats right beside them (trees, bushes, and yes even blades of grass). Mosquitos actually thrive in wet conditions and lay their eggs in water. To put into perspective, one inch of water in a small pail can produce thousands of eggs. The reason I think that it generally failed was because the first time you set it up, essentially it did its job. You killed the majority of the mosquitos in that area. You did mention that it did rain after that, but what about before. If it was generally dry, there may not have been a lot of eggs produced and there was not enough population left after the first time to repopulate that much when it did come. Fun fact, is mosquitos don't actually bite to feed off of you. Mosquitos cannot produce their own blood so they use the blood of mammals to help create the egg. Male mosquitos do not bite, just the females. All in all, I would look at cleaning out a fan, a filter, or something along the way that is clogging it up. In theory, I think it works. I cant imagine a 400 dollar product failing after 2 days unless there is a faulty piece, but I could be wrong. It could be a scam as well I suppose

You are mostly right. It's not necessarily that they don't move around it's just that where they prefer to be are usually localized. Cool dark and damp, that's where mosquitoes like to be. Wet grass after rain or early morning after the dew fall or late evening when it cools. Grass is a huge place they stay near shrubs or trees. Near a water source or where water has settled. Any stagnant water source.
@robert-asdf2 ай бұрын
So it's water.. Idk, possibly three other things. 1. It's hard for the machine's water source to be attractive when the rain put it everywhere else. 2. Maybe should have rinsed it out completely from dead mosquitos since they may not be tempted to plant life where they see death. 3. Or maybe some hormone from the moth lingered around with the rain moisture and germinated/fermented into something to repel mosquitos.

Apparently mosquitoes can learn that certain stimulus, such as the scent of that particular attractant, poses a danger. This leads to a decreased drive to feed and can result in a completely loss of attraction to the attractant. I suggest not using the octenol or use another brand if you can. Perhaps as the pad ages the scent will change enough for it to retain it's attractiveness. Make sure the device is cleaned thoroughly to remove mosquito pheromones.

I have some property with the very same situation. These two things are very effective for me . If you have a pond or lots of standing water on your property, I highly recommend you investigate. It’s called mosquito dunks. You put them in standing water or in a pond and what they do is put out a chemical that prevents mosquito larvae from completing the cycle. Cheap and very effective. Make sure the very wettest part of the spring you are keeping the dunks on all standing water. I don’t care if it’s just a bucket that has some water in it. Get a dunk in there. This will kill all the babies. One of the most effective means of overtime limiting their population.. the dunks last about one month. The second thing I do is look for mosquito fogger products that heat up and take a liquid fogger and you can fog your yard. I found the vet will keep down mosquitoes for day or two. Letting me enjoy my property a little bit more together. These two products are enormous benefits to keeping down the mosquito population.

On the other hand they attract more bugs and those that don't get trapped are now just needlessly attracted to your house. We had a problem with certain bugs in my garden so I found plants they hated and planted them to deter them. when I used "traps" I found the number increased because not all would die but all would be attracted and would then just increase the breeding.

You should expect the catch rate to go down as you run the machine. The whole point is that you are punching a hole in the mosquito population in the 3/4 acre around it. That said, something does not sound right with your experience. Are you certain that the outer door for the basket is shut fully? There are two reasons that matter: 1. The fan is after the basket and pulls a vacuum to suck the mosquitos into the basket. An air leak would defeat that. 2. The outer door is responsible for opening the door of the basket. I have put tape around the outer door to seal it up on one that didn't want to close well. That helped a bunch. If it is running, it should be catching. I have run one for years. They are a bit finicky to keep running, but they work great while running. I have several videos on maintaining the Independence and Patriot models on my channel if you want to see the internals (just look up my name or click my icon). I don't clean them out other than when I change the propane. It's better to leave them going uninterrupted. Here is a video of a start of year clean-up: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mXSroomkgrl5bdE In summary, they are great machines if you are slightly handy and don't mind opening them up now and again to clean them. But the machine is under a roof because I think it must be protected from the rain? U did something wrong. It should work like it did the first 2 days. Maybe something broke? Or its clocked?
@prebenkul2 ай бұрын
You should do this again but this time do a comparison to another machine called the "Skeetervac SV35", its very similar, also uses a propane tank also with about the same price. The key difference being it also gives heat which is another thing mosquitos love and it has fly glue traps so any who lands gets stuck! Would be really cool to see who's the best!

Your idea of a tonne of mosquitos is just what is in my garage on a hourly basis down here in Baton Rouge.
@grapicusdrinktus2 ай бұрын
Assuming the inlet isn't blocked and the propane remained ignited, then maybe it's because the bait traps only use a specific scent? I could see it catching all the mosquitos only attracted to one scent, but then the remaining mosquitos are attracted to something else. As a test you could collect samples of your arm hair or something after sweating a lot and add it to the bait trap. If you see a lot more mosquitos on the following use, then chances are they are attracted to a chemical in your skin but not to the bait any more.
@brucecook5023 ай бұрын
I wonder if it's possible that mosquitoes can sense the carcasses of other mosquitoes that have been dead for a certain amount of time and they would instinctively stay away from that scent and maybe that's why they fell for the Trap the first couple days but not so much the rest of the time. Can't really think of any other reason it would work the first couple days but not the three following weeks.

Mosquitoes love a wet and humid environment. They typically lay their eggs and bodies of water. If you find the body of water where they lay, then that would also be a good place to set up the trap. That also leaves me with another point: maybe the trap is too warm or too hot .

@momkatmaxАй бұрын
Maybe the other packs of attractants were not good. Try one of your shirts over it to add to the yummieness. I did my undergrad studies with mosquitos. They hang around in longer grass and weeds so keep them short as possible. Any puddle of water, even a cup of rainwater in a planter or bucket is a nursery for them. Tires are a favorite, so we need to get rid of them, send them out to be recycled.

Our local hardware store got a whole pile of these several years ago. Bunch of people bought them, and every one of them was kick ass for the first tank, sometimes only half a tank and then every single one of them failed. When they warranty them all the company blamed contaminated propane. Some people say it’s from the oil leeching out of the various transfer hoses to lubricating oil in the transfer pumps bypassing into the propane stream. The Mr. heater filters don’t actually have any kind of a filter It’s just a chamber to collect oil and debris. I know you can get expensive natural gas and propane filters, but seems like the company should have those preinstalled if this is that common of a problem. Parker makes a good user installable one but there well over $100.

The most important thing to note is there’s generally two species of mosquitoes in the USA. You need to choose the right attractant.

I worked at a big box store about 20 years ago when these hit the shelves... (At least in my area) They were selling like the proverbial hot-cakes, couldnt keep stock of those octonal refills or of the units. The following season they were taken off the shelf, tons of customers asking for them, but not a single unit to sell. I wonder if the return rate was too high, too many complaints, or just poorly designed long-term-use product. Not sure. They only took up a bay, and how many we were selling: one would think it would be worth the cost of the shelf to keep selling the units. I dont recall if we had any instore returns of the product, not sure tho.

I’ve had one of these when the unit ignited it worked great but if it has any issues during startup it will run and expend propane but not burn so it’s very ineffective

Heres a thought. Are you sure they are mosquitos and not crane flies. Because they look a lot alike. And also the swarm effect you're referring too makes me think you actually have a crane fly problem. Not a mosquito problem. Just food for thought.

Or after catching all the female mosquitoes in the area, he left behind only crane flies, which look like large mosquitoes, but which don't bite people and so aren't attracted to the pheromone.

OK, so with those magnets, I have two of them and I’ve had probably several of them before that but where I learned is that they make these cleaning kit so every time you put a new tank on it and you put a new pad on it you’re supposed to run a cleaner through it to clean it out. If you don’t, it can get plugged up and it doesn’t work right
@kenneth2512 ай бұрын
I wonder if the propain tank was leaking from the inside since you said they were sitting on top of it. That or the threads could be leaking on the tank. Because having a high concentration around it tells me theyre being atracted to it instead of in a focused aread at the nozzle. Try putting it inside a tent or somerhing and see if they go inside in case its the wind nocking around the mosquitoes before they get sucked up too
@liquidrock2u23 күн бұрын
I don't know if this is still going on since it's colder outside, but you should try buying some fly trap paper, wrap it around a large bucket, and fill up the bucket with hot water. Cover the top of the bucket as well.

Maybe that pad/residue does some weird chemistry as it dries? I would test out thoroughly cleaning the inside of the pad compartment with denatured alcohol. It would be cumbersome to have to do every few days, but if it works, you'd be back on the offensive.

The problem is, the mosquitoes as you described just sit in the grass etc until blood 🩸 walks by. So while your machine is running they are all resting in the grass.
@HarryToeface2 ай бұрын
Yeah because the results were so good after 48 hours there's probably something that caused the bugs to not be able to be captured (aka something blocked or the fan being clogged). You would have to either open it and check out the components, or send it in for repairs because there has to be a warranty.

Use that sponge it comes with and moist it with Vinegar. You'll see some impressive results. Then you'll thank me. Apply vinegar every 2 or 3 days or until it's dried out. Also use a swab to reach inside the suction tube and apply vinegar to the inner walls. The results of the vinegar will blow your mind.

Assuming you can get it to work reliably, I was thinking it may be practical to rent it out to people, especially if you can knock out quite a bit in 2 days.
@elbackapacko71383 ай бұрын
I wonder if you had a bucket of water right next to it for them to "nest" with would have had better results... Yeah, would have helped produce more, but may have brought more centrally located to the device and higher chance to be sucked in.

We've got 4 similar ones on a large property next to water, and the baskets need to be emptied out every couple weeks at peak. The ones I use have much larger baskets too, although don't use propane, just an electric heater, chemical attractor and UV light (though I'm not sure if the light really helps much). If anything I'd expect this to work even better. But it's worth noting that once the population has been knocked down, you'll see only a fraction as many. However given you still had mosquitoes around, I suspect you either used old attractant or it broke.

Some wasps release a indicator chemical when they die, probably mosquitos do this as well. Try cleaning the trap probably and then try it again. Please comment if it worked, I'm very curious if my theory is correct.
@hiddentruth19822 ай бұрын
That is an interesting quandary. Do mosquitoes learn? Are they capable of picking out a scent and realizing its not a food source? Maybe it's that it's a constant heat source so they think it's part of the environment. It could be a chemical release from the basket and cleaning it is needed.

We have similar cheaper devices for work called skeetr-vac. Its a grill sized propane tank setup up like this, but has sticky flypaper style tape on the outside. Its supposed to control over an acre of land, and when they are filled and running, seem to make a huge diffeence.

Put the unit up-wind from the area your trying to treat. For larger properties you might need multiple units running in various corners of the property to provide adequate coverage to the parts of yard you want treated. Use to sell these things. After the warranty window ends and it gets an electrical gremlin in it don't bother trying to diagnose it. Shipping it back and forth to warranty/service center will cover the cost of a new unit by the third trip and it probably still won't be fixed after a few weeks going back and forth. Works great til it breaks.
