It seems that despite the wording on the card, the way it works is closer to "Spell Damage +2 until you cast a spell", then after the spell resolves it loses +2 damage

The spell damage from Apprentice stays until you play a different spell after the first resolves. You can test that with School Teacher's Nagaling. The spell damage applies to the Nagaling too, when it has a damage spell(like Sinister Strike). And if you play a copy of the same Nagaling the spell damage still applies. If you play a different Nagaling or a spell after that it goes away. You can combo the Nagaling with Brann and get copies with Zola. Shadowstep would waste the spell damage. Did that in Standard in early Sunken City when the spell pool was small.

I feel like it's not a bug, it's mainly hearthstone's wording that is at fault. It's pretty clear the way the card is programmed is that it gives +2 spell damage to the next spell cast, but since fist of jaraxxus isn't "cast" when it's discarded it bypasses the limit

@@Begeru Hence the comment about strange wording. It isn't just the next spell cast, it is +2 until the next other spell begins after the first is resolved. Cataclysm isn't resolved yet so the +2 still applies. You can use the +2 on Nagalings, but it only applies to one Nagaling. You can replay copies of the same Nagaling several times and still have +2 (Brann->Nagaling->Zola->Nagaling×2). The +2 disappear when the next spell is used.

@@Begeru I would just like to be clear that my view is that I don't think the wording is accurate, but this is a common design choice all over hearthstone. It makes cards read cleaner and often provides flavour (e.g. spin the wheel of yogg), but the tradeoff is that the interaction between cards and their true effects is much harder to understand, especially in comparison to more litigious games like Magic the Gathering.

I've seen this in other plays, apparently the way it works is actually "this has +2 sp dmg until your next spell resolves", which for cataclysm, means ending at destroying all minions and getting them off the board, but since hand is discarded first (thus those spells played), before cataclysm resolves (the spell the game is looking at to remove the sp dmg), the discarded spells get the buff too.

13:00 It doesn't make that much sense to me that the deathrattle triggers after and does not heal the opponent back above 0. An essential element of playing Cataclysm is that the Fists and Barrages do not hit the minions still on board which implies that they're already destroyed ? To me this implies thatt the effect is sequentially (1) Destroy minions and (2) Discard shenanigans happens - and it feels like Deathrattle triggers should more naturally happen between (1) and (2) than after (2).

It does make sense if you understand how things die in this game. Whenever an action is completed, the game will check for deaths. The way Cataclysm works is that it will flag every minion on the board for death, then it will discard every card in your hand, discard effects trigger, then all minions die. The thing is since both the enemy hero and the Mistress both die at the same time, the Mistress can no longer save the enemy hero because once the hero is flagged for death, then the game is essentially over.

@@GaussianEntity It's kind of weird though that the entire card resolves based on initial condition rather than each effect resolving and being used to calculate the following events. An example of what I mean, Breath of Dreams. The first part of the card, draws you a card. It *then* checks if you have a dragon in your hand to see if you gain the mana. So if you had no dragons prior, and drew one off the spell, you still gain the mana Another example of cataclysm being inconsistent with this - it's weird that cataclysm + mechathun works. Considering your minions are destroyed (ie mechathun), and then your hand is discarded. Mechathun is destroyed while cards are in your hand, but it's death resolves after theyre gone.

@@mikef5951 That's because minions don't die immediately. Very rarely will things die during card resolution. Cards that do kill things immediately, then do something else invoke something we call the forced death phase. Cards like Poison Seeds and Reincarnate use this to do what they do. Cataclysm does not and could one day do this if they decide to change how it works.

I doubt it’s a bug. There aren’t any errors in how the code was written, it’s just that the way they wrote the code does not perfectly align with the card text. The card reads that your next spell has +2 SD, but the code dictates that essentially everything has +2 SD until a cast spell resolves. For example, the way the card text reads would mean that a Nagaling wouldn’t benefit from the spell damage, but they do. In this case, the +2 SD is constantly active until the cataclysm fully resolves which occurs after every card is discarded. Since the discarding happens before the spell resolves, you retain that global +2SD

something tells me that as soon as the wild meta starts slowing down this'll be a deck that people complain about as much as they complain(ed) about Pillager Rogue because it can be just as fast and is also entirely from hand which for some reason is regarded as less fair than something like 8/6 worth of stats on board turn 1.

@@jamiebowler4693 I mean sure but Warlock can stall the game in ways that Rogue can't, with healing and board clears. Don't get me wrong, I don't think this deck is quite there yet. Pillager Rogue has basically announced itself for many expansions until it got enough support to be viable, we saw something similar with Discolock and now we have this Deck which will also only get better as time goes on.

@@jamiebowler4693 yes, it is frustrating to face, some might argue that it's bad game design but it's also very much an established mechanic of Hearthstone, since the very beginning we had iceblock for Mage and "elusiveness" has been part of Rogue's class identity for years from Vanish to Valeera the Hollow, Evasion and now Cloak of Shadows. The really problematic part is that uninteractive strategies are way faster than before due to all the mana cheat that they added to the game. I remember Juicy Psychmelon getting nerfed because it gave the mana cheating class aka Druid too much consistency. Now there's Mages refreshing their Mana crystals, Rogue's no longer just reducing the cost of spells but instead all the cards in their hand, Discard actually just meaning "play the card for 0 mana" and all the other offenders that I'm too lazy to list. It's the curse of eternal formats and uncreative designers who don't stick to the original design philosophy of the game.

Discard quest will not be worth using. Spending 5 mana on the portal is terrible, and two imps each turn isn’t a worthwhile quest reward even if the portal opened when discarded.

@@Skullhawk13 Tome Tampering + Imp, both get played on turn 4, and if you have Soul Barrage you can clean the board + all the 1 cost minions you can get, is a 6/4 free each turn, if Jaraxxus is good spending 2 mana for a 6/6, i think is worth.
