A curse or a blessing is the state of my mind when I think of the Lagos Calabar highway. I don't want to delve into the demolition of properties along the corridor of the Highway but on the story of the cost of the project and the Nigerian factor that we all know about. Is this a Curse or will this be a Blessing at the end of the day?
I hope you find the vlog exciting and give it a Like.

What year was the Cairo-South africa done? How many lanes was it? We are the ones who always compared other countries' stabdard of progress with ours, yet any attempt by the government to do the same will be condemned. People say all sorts of things when Buhari was constructing the rail lines, but today, Nigeria has one of the best, if not the best railway in Africa. I'm in support of this project embarked on by thus administration,. I just want them to balance it out by fixing our existing roads, which are currently eyes sore.

All the trains projects they built so far is unproductive, because Lagos to Oyo is not and Abuja to Kaduna are not making any profits. If those incompetent corrupted Nigerians elites have vision they should know that Lagos to Eastern or Northern Nigeria will bring quick profits. Coming to Coast road, no one said it not good, but Nigeria have over 50,000 uncompleted projects around the country. The cost you quoted for the 10,000 km road is not all of the road, it is the part of the road that cuts across Egypt. Even though it is cheaper the terrain is different. In some terrain 1km can cost 1000 USD while it will cost multiply by 100 in another terrain. The new road is going to be constructed with investors' money. Investors cannot put their money in the rehabilitation of your bad roads. The investors put their money only on shining stuff that guarantees returns, which is the sentiment the president appealed to. This is little information I can gather because I am also concern since I use the Lagos/Abeokuta express road every week... if you know you know.

Lagos - Calabar Highway would be a great development, only if it's completed as promised. Unfortunately, the project has started on a very bad note; destruction of huge investments in the Lagos corridor, lack of due process and transparency in the contract awards, hugely inflated cost and the highhandedness of government officials, especially the minister of works. It is left to be seen if the project will be completed with the time-frame, and we enjoying the much talked about benefits.

I like the way you analysed this with clips from your numerous trips. You have personal experience of the deplorable condition of the interstate highways by virtue of your travels while most commentators postulate from anecdotal evidence. Nigeria is a dysfunctional country where long term planning and cost benefit analysis are alien concepts.. There is nothing wrong with initiating infrastructural projects in order to create employment and stimulate the economy but such projects must never result in destruction of more jobs than it creates. It must be spread across the country and awarded to multiple contractors. Maintaining and upgrading existing highways will bring far more economic benefits to the country than embarking on a grandiose highway project that will be ultimately abandoned..

Reason for high cost 1. It is a concrete road, another high cost reason 2. It is a coaster road and will need alot of sand filling and protective barriers to mitigate the ocean encroachment. 3. Lagos - Calabar highway is the best project so far, unfortunately, most Nigerians are used to failed promises hence why it is difficult to believe government's intention. The project will boost the economy beyond our wildest imagination. Imagine the economic boost to the riverine areas especially in the Niger Delta regions, it will boost logistic across the nation, cost of transportation will reduce, not to talk of the indirect cost savings in fuel and motor maintenance due to shorter travel times and better road network, the tourism industry will pick up as other states can benefit from new road network, in terms of safety it takes most of the trucks off our mainland road and reduce the risk to ordinary road users and further extend the shelf life of our local roads that aren't build for all these heavy duty trucks. There will be glitches along the way but it is a project that is long overdue. it is better to make a wrong decision than not make any decision.

Each administration has it's own priorities and a project one administration had began the next administration decides not to complete. The U.S. has some of those abandon highway projects too. Your manufacturing sector has collapsed completely, your agriculture sector, energy sector, education, these vital sectors all gone, the only thing that can bring development in your mind is coastal highway 😂😅😂 do we have this coastal road in 1970s and 1980s when our manufacturing sector, agric sector etc were doing excellently well, then naira had more value than the US dollars, there people in this country who has no business around the corridors of government, theirs is to look after cattles, goats 🐐, sheep, they should remain in farms, running the economy of a nation requires sophisticated brains because we're in competition with countrie like UK, USA, Russia, Germany, Canada, Japan, Korea ,China, France, India, these are sophisticated minds in economy, science and technology.

Good road network across a country is vital for expansive socioeconomic development. The main problem correctly identified is the Nigerian factor (over bloated costs to cater for many parasites, the penchant to abandon projects halfway, very poor maintenance culture, sabotage of projects, amongst many others). Personally, I feel priority should be given to upgrading, dualising where necessary and or completing existing highways and rural roads that have been abandoned for decades. The Lagos-Calabar Highway is a laudable project but I do not think this the right time for such a project. Ugrading other coastal ports will help to decongest Lagos ports and reduce the number of heavy good haulage lorries traversing the country thereby extending the lifespan of current roads.

Who will visit Nigeria where kidnapping, banditry and terrorism are the order of the day? Did you see what happen some weeks ago when a fake announcement was made by Bayo Onanuga that Maersk shipping company wanted to invest $600 million in Nigeria? many of their investors started pulling out their money from the company, the company lost 4% of their market capitalization in just 2 days or so, una never learn anything from that 😂 coastal road is good when you have other critical areas working perfectly, what are we even producing here in Nigeria? I don't think anybody objects to the building of such a highway, what we object to is the why now and the cost. It is good to probe & critique government activities, it should actually be encouraged. That's democratic. However i think it's counter productive if one's critiques is based on speculations. Thus I think you should first research extensively & confirm facts & figures before putting things out for deliberations. E.g there is no way or no where on planet earth where 10,000 km road construction would cost under $2b. No matter how tiny or substandard the road is unless it's untarred and just a graded pathway. Admitting you're only assuming an unresearched or unverified internet fact to be true is not an excuse. You would have planted a certain perspective into people's mind already. It's what a politician that doesn't want to lie outrightly would do to get people's mind against a particular course . It's also notable to add that coastal roads are usually an expensive venture due to marshy terrain and massive sandfilling or in many cases multiple bridges. The road you're comparing isnt coastal in any form. Concrete roads are also usually expected to cost double depending on the thickness. It's been said that the life expectancy of the road in question is 100years with it's 10inches thickness. Secondly the information has been out there for ages but Nigerians deliberately turn deaf ears that federal government is only committing funds to about 30% of the project & the rest is to be privately sourced which is their justification for a planned tolling of the highway. So when addressing the project and cost and criticisms, speak to these facts that the government isn't just throwing 100% fund into the project at such a difficult time. Majority of it is planned to be a private investment. I enjoy your videos but speculations are useless. Kindly make it a responsibility to encourage your audience to focus on facts. By that even the the less intelligent ones would improve in yheir thinking & you would done your bit to uplifting the society by improving people mentally. Cheers

Did you ask yourself simple questions like: are the terrain and topography the same? Was that one a coastal road? Which portion of the road was sand filled? What is the cost of sand filling per kilometre? Was the road being executed the same time as this one to warrant comparison? Who told you that federal government of Nigeria is paying this amount you have quoted? Are those other bad roads you mentioned not currently been awarded? Did you interview citizens of those states this road would pass through and they told you they don’t want? These are some of the questions you would have asked yourself before coming out to make this video. When Sanwo olu started work on the blue rail line this was how the nay sayers started condemning the idea that he should have concentrated on fixing the already congested inner roads. Today the nay sayers are permanently shut up in shame. Like what Ben Bruce said: if you are not happy with this project, when it is completed don’t pass through it.

I like the way you admitted not having the exact facts about this project and that of Cairo- Johannesburg. The truth is that the only money the federal govt is contributing is 1.8 billion dollars. The remaining will be contributed by investors who are going to toll and maintain it to recoup their money. That’s how it’s done in the advanced countries of the world. In UK you see tolls in the highways, some up to 25 years running. Most of the roads you mentioned have been awarded but some of the contractors are not happy with the minister’s style. They want to remain in site sine die and punishing Nigerians. They are not happy with the minister for telling them to change to concrete technology that would last between 25 and 50 years but prefer the bitumen that can’t last five years with the terrain and topography of the southern Nigeria. These are the challenges the govt is facing which should make all Nigerians to support the efforts of the present administration against these evil contractors.

I think you should be doing a better research before making comparisons between the Cairo-Capetown and the coastal highway. Using that premise to belittle the impact of the road is so wrong. Your figure is very misleading. Most of the roads in central Africa aren't even motoroble. The figure you gave sounds like a joke. Do you know how long the length of Africa is? Anyways, since the private company will be covering most parts of the funding, we aren't really losing.
