actually, newer anime is more tamed and older anime is either darker or more out of pocket because people are more SENSATIVE now in 2010+ So any show before 2010 tends to be crazier and holds nothing back. (BUT, im ngl, it is what I honestly feel makes anime unique and different, and I prefer people dont judge it as too much or out of pocket if possible.) P.S. the version of code geass you found is actually censored A BIT because they removed/edited out the Pizza Hut logo in the episodes, which is ICONIC to code geass.

Btw, as repeated like 10 times by the characters, Lelouch and the other students are Britannians, not Japanese (Suzaku is Japanese though). I mean, Lelouch's name is even french (lamperouge= red lamp), how could he be Japanese. Some Britannians just live in Japan, as colonisers I guess.

Yay Geass! What A ride. Context but not spoiler since it is never fully talked about in the show: Code Geass is an Alternate History/Sci-Fi setting. The revolution in the US lost/ never happened and so remained within the British Empire, however, Napolean still rose to power in Europe, and (possibly thanks to the Royal Navy being busy in the Americas) Napoleon successfully invaded Great Britain, as a result the Royal family escaped to America and that became the locus of the Britannian empire. Yes Lelouch is Britannian should have already been clear but your misunderstanding is understandable for episode 1, it’ll become perfectly clear by episode 2-3. 7:50 normal for the “Britanian students” Britannia students live within the main colonial city of Britannia, the remaining Japanese/11’s live in the ghettos and ruins that resulted from the war of conquest 10:00 yeah Code Geass holds up well, If there are any complaints about style its not that its “old”, it would be that it is so “unique” that it looks different from both shows of the same period and newer ones, but that distinctive style might actually be a strength that has helped it stay relevant 29:15 “older anime more tame” lol, Lmao even. The more violent and mature subject matter of anime is one of the things that caused it to stand out from Western cartoons from the very beginning. However, I would say that older shows do tend to have less shock value Gore/Violence that is there for nothing but the shock value. In these older shows the violence tends to serve a purpose to a greater cause/ story. Though for Geass episode one the motive to give the first episode a good hook is obviously present. Glad it worked on you. Also Finally I'm a DUB fan Geass Dub is excellent. Though in reality, both versions are good.

@@BlazeEmerald YEah I am normally a sub supporter(Japan has a wide and deep talent of voice actors after all), but I go for the Dub every time when I think it is genuinely better. For Full Metal Alchemist and Yu Yu Hakusho, I think the case is clearly in the Dub's favor. For Geass, I also think the DUb is better but the margin is slim to the point the experience is roughly equal either way. I've seen both versions, both are good, with great emotions for the characters and neither grates. That said overall the Dub still gives me things the Sub doesn't here, especially with more minor characters

Yes, yes! Code Geass is that rare show that's actually gorgeously dubbed. The actor who voiced Lelouch in english is Johnny Yong Bosch, very talented VA, couple of scenes litererally made me cry because of him. You may also know him from other shows and games, as example Nero from Devil May Cry. Have a good time.

You've seen Death Note and I remember that you've already watched a mecha anime so here's one that sort of has a mix between the two - smart characters battling with wits and robots (and magic powers!). Both dub and sub for Code Geass is superb, but I personally recommend watching it in dub on your first watch through mainly because Code Geass is an extremely information dense anime. And you're likely to miss important things if you're not super focused on subtitles.

A little backstage stuff: Sunrise, famous for Gundam, etc. told the staff to make whatever, so long as it had mecha kits to merchandise til the fans wallets ran dry. Also, the anime industry was going through a high-school drama phase so whatever they made must have to be in a school setting. So there's the underlying bones, mecha fights and schoolkids.

oh i am so excited you have nooooo idea, damn fine time to have recently joined the Patreon. but! regarding the nationality of the characters: you're pretty safe on judging it for yourself based upon on the character's name. if it's a non-Japanese name, they're a Britannian -- if it's a Japanese name, they're Japanese. in case you need a guide on how to tell the difference: Japanese names are vowel-heavy, almost always end with a vowel, and tend to avoid more than 2 consonants in a row -- Suzaku, Izumi, Itadori, Fushiguro, Mikasa, to give examples. you can also nigh-always break a Japanese name into "consonant+vowel" pairs, unless a vowel is by itself: Su-za-ku, I-zu-mi, Fu-shi-gu-ro, etc. names like Lelouch Lamprouge and Rivalz (guy with the bike) and Clovis (blond prince dude) all break a rule for a Japanese name, so you can assume these characters to be Britannians. this message is brought to you by a rabid linguist who has adored Code Geass since it first came out in the U.S. in 2006 and COMPLETELY GETS your supreme confusion re: what bloody nationality each character is, lmfao.

@@RageKage987 Akito the Exile wasn't bad and the movie was just okay. However, the movie and the new series are both based on an "alternate timeline", one which Lelouch didn't die. I'm not personally a fan of that idea. The ending was perfect with it's did he/didn't he, so they could've just come out and said that he didn't die and everything was a continuation. I HATE timeline crap.

When it comes to dub vs sub it tends to depend on what version was watched first. Shows like Fullmetal Alchemist, Code Geass, Cowboy Bebop came out in a time when most series were seen dubbed. With streaming it became much easier to see it earlier subbed and dubbed shows can sometimes be hit or miss. I've seen Code Geass in both sub and dub and both are great so it's up to you, but the dub is one of the greats of the time.

Code Geass likes to use Chess a lot. It's mostly metaphorical, but this first game is actually very accurate. Chess experts have checked out the board state and confirmed that moving the King is the right move. It even explains why Lelouch smiled when the noble laughed. The fact that he couldn't see that Lelouch was making the exact correct move meant he couldn't counter his moves to win the game. That being said, it's also a metaphor in this story as well. Lelouch moves the King because "if the King doesn't lead how can he expect his subordinates to follow?"

Also it has so good ending, I think best ending I’ve watched (I’m not a huge fan of AOT ending - it was ok but nothing really amazing). Also this series is made anime only, and from what I’ve watched, it’s the best one. Also it is a Pizza Hut’s best ad. Also 10/10
