Good plan on the 'walls' around the rack. I would also put a top on it as well. Give yourself room to work back in the hot lane, 3-4 feet back there should be enough. You also may need another fan in the wall to exaust all the air from the octominers.

Perfect plan. I would however consider a ceiling with the walls to channel the air flow through your octo shelf (box). Also keep the shelf ~4 feet from the fan wall with an access door so you can get to the back of the shelf. RPM 🚀

Once the air temp reaches above a certain temp. The cooling off cards will not work. As off right now I can no longer mine ETH + TON. Fresh air is to hot. Mining only ETH has no issues cooling GPUs. Server case or open frame. Best way of cooling is huge intake fans blowing towards the cards. High ceiling heights and big opening for hot air to vent outside. Adopt big farms cooling solution.

I wouldn't run the power cables through the mesh. Drop them down the back into the PDU, that way you could easily cable manage and get to them individually if needed. I'd also leave a minimum shoulder width of walkway behind for air flow and to get back there if/when needed. Maybe find a way to direct air towards your exhaust on the top to prevent it settling? Def wish they had single orders a while ago, I would have went with 3 from the get go...5 is just too much currently.

put the cases on the bottom shelf with the screen to the top. heat rises and you have them up high already. psu cables looped to center shelf. use the velcro straps for wire management and to hold to center shelf. plywood sides and cover with gpu boxes. tops shelf would be free for if you have to work on any cases.
@huntmining2 жыл бұрын
You know there is one thing i would recommend. Heat rises, and well the only way to combat that is a wall. I would Seal completely the top shelf away from the bottom to create 2 "wind tunnels" so to speak. I can almost bet you will see much better temperatures on the top cases. I'm already dealing with 96F temps and so far so good!

Run your power around the back and run network through wire mesh. Its always a good idea to separate data and power runs to avoid crosstalk/ interference. "Ethernet energy levels are fairly low partly to ensure that adjacent Ethernet cables in a trunk can coexist without much crosstalk. But with power lines, antenna feeds, and so forth, this can be an issue."
@TechManTY.2 жыл бұрын
Why not just get 2x4 and paneling, build walls on the sides of shelves? You could put a door in the back wall to get into the " hot box" . Then as far as cable management goes, Lowe's or home Depot should have those strips for rakes in the garage. You can put those on the back of rack and just push wires in the foam slots to hold them and easy to remove 😎

Thats the exact shelving unit and setup i have. I had 2 1800cfm gable fans trying to pull all the hot air out. Here is the issue you will have if you use a bunch of octo miners. You will actually cause a high pressure area inside your HOT enclosure. The octo miner fans push 240cfm per fan at 100% so add up all your fans cfm and then see how little cfm that 20" fan pulls out. I have a few photos and ideas but Cant really share on KZbin.

Use velcro straps or whatever to neaten up the wiring and run the cables under and up through the wire mesh to clean up the look and make it easier to clean around wiring. You need a gap between server cases and the exhaust fans, the current distance looks ok plus it gives you room to trouble shoot & move around.

RPM didn't you get PSU splitters with those Octo 8s? With my x12s they came with a 3 to 1 PSU cord, then I just got extensions for those, will save you a lotta sockets using those splitters. FYI got a husky frame and got mine setup the exact way you are doing it, let the power cords wrap around the back so they don't pinch as much with hard angles. GL on the build!

I built a hot aisle for my asics, works way better than the open air design.... if you want this to work, you'll need to figure out cfm per machine and match the exhaust cfm to the cumulative total of your machines. then add some hvac sheets to close off the hot aisle so it all goes out the exhaust. will also need intake fan to match the exhaust fan cfm.

Your Mining rigs need to be as low as possible, where the air is cooler; I tried multiple auto shutter fans to remove the hot air; the problem with that method is the heat will not go where you want it too, and the temp will increase anyways despite your efforts; unless you have a heat collector, ( I had to bring in a heating & cooling guy to evaluate my setup ). I bought a 48x48x80 grow tent and I have six inch, insulated duck hose running to an enclosed full sized blower motor, ( squirrel cage type ), which moves a lot of air outside. Before I had enclosed the blower motor it would suck both doors shut; but hot spots would still accumulate. I added an 8,000 BTU window a/c and remove the venting, built a box to run a 4 inch hose to pump cool air directly into the bottom, and removed the garage door to the shop, built a wall and installed another 14,000 BTU a/c to condition the air that is pulled inside of the grow tent from the three vents around the bottom. I didn't get the cheap tent made with 500D materials, I got the one with thicker 2000D. I have 6 rigs, by 8x GPU's ( around 55 cards ), 4 asics and 10 fpga units and it stays around 64° Fahrenheit now. The hot air will ride right above the air stream moved out by your auto shutter fan, you will end up pushing out the mid range temps while the hot air continues to accumulate and build up, from the top to the bottom. I have tried different versions every year for the last five years, and finally beat it with this setup; and you can actually talk to someone over the delta fans in the tent. Maybe if you seal the sides and across the top with a roll of the silver thermal barrier going back to the fan; but if you leave any place for the heat to escape, the hot air will not move side to side, even if you create a draft, it will still move in an angle going up and accumulate over a given time frame. If you run the cases vertical, eventually, the upper cards will also run hotter, than if you had them horizontal; you can never completely stop some heat from going up. Where the hot spots start to accumulate, was baffling, ( it can move looking for a way to move higher as the temps go up. I had to get a ridiculous amount of thermometers, ( it was cheap ), place them around the room, in layers to figure out where it starts to build; I could have tried a heat laser, but then I could only read one spot at a time; once again mining caused me to learn a spin off subject; that taught me how to improve the heating and cooling efficiency in the house also. ( which off set my power bill in a positive way ). Does your barn have a "Ridge Vent" ? If not, it would help to release heat. Hopefully, this gives you some ideas that apply. Peace

put your network on your little shelf and your pdus on the vertical stanchions of the shelving unit. use velcro ties to mount all the power cables to the shelf itself as they route to the pdus. Fan em out real clean, narrow them into tight bundles and label everything (color coding works really good too).Your pdus will end up a mess on that shelf. I've used shelves similar to this. We put big ass locking casters on the bottoms so we could relocate entire shelves if we wanted to, just by disconnecting power to the pdus and primary LAN to the switch.

I watch this vid 2x to get a full understanding of what youre doing. if it was me doing this project this is what i would do. 1. see what the price difference between 4x8 sheets of plywood and say 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch 4x8 sheets of styrofoam is. 2. I would get enough to be able to build walls on each side of the rack. i would put a shelf at the very top and put a piece of material there. 3. i would get enough material to be able to angle in from the sides towards the fan. thats just my take on it I would also do my wires off the back side and not through the wire shelving as this would make it easier to access each server. do you really want to be fishing wires through the shelving every time you need to access a server case?? I also used to work at lowes many years ago and would have to change out this type of racking but on a bigger scale. As long as the uprights and/or crossbeams arent bent the structural integrity is fine. Scratches are ok only worry about it if it's bent.

You can get the same racks at Lowes as well for about the same price. They have basically the same thing as Kobalt (Lowe's Brand - Gray color) or Edsal Muscle Racks (black color). The Kobalt is a bit more of a pain to setup because the sides don't come pre-assembled, but they've been great. One suggestion is to get some big zip ties and at least zip tie the grates to the back rail. If you don't have much on the shelf, the grates can slide a bit as you move stuff on/off the shelf. I also zip tied a 1x2 board along the back edge so I don't accidentally push anything off the back since it's not up against a wall.

"Summer is coming" is to miners what "winter is coming" is to Game of Thrones. I have a similar shelf from Costco that is also really high quality compared to Amazon Basics shelving, but costed significantly less. Hey RPM, awesome update video. IMO I would not have the small shelf in between, I would try to mount PDU's and Networking on the side of the shelf. Either cable ties or some other method (Velcro straps? ) :) that way airflow is not impeded (if thats important) between shelves. You can mount PDU horizontally at the back of the shelf OR vertically on the upright part of the shelves at the end.

Personally I'd go over and not through the mesh. if you need to service or rearrange it'll be easier. I'd also route my Ethernet separate from power to avoid any interference. Best way to get good ethernet lengths would be to custom make the runs yourself. Box of CAT5, bag of RJ45 connectors, electrician scissors, RJ45 crimper, and a ethernet cable tester. All of which you can buy at Home Depot or Amazon. Hope that helps. Mine on!

Your almost there, but your current plan will leak too much air around all of the cracks and crevices. If I had your setup I’d seal up all sides of the octominders so that the only air that exits out of your exhaust fan has been drawn through an octominer case. Air is a liquid and will travel the path of least resistance. Flowing through your shelf grating and “PDU shelf” is way less work for the air than blowing through the octominer.
