Very hard to see what the problem was. Very light wind, so should have been easy. I think maybe they ran out of chain as they came back and that caused a problem. A couple of points: when you are reversing under anchor chain tension, you cannot easily correct your course with the rudder as the anchor pulls you straight. If you need to make big corrections you have to use forward gear and use prop wash to change your direction. Secondly, get in the habit of throwing the windward line first as this will keep you from blowing on to your neighbour.

Thanks for commenting. The worst part was, unfortunately, before the camera started rolling. Firstly, they dropped the anchor across the water and, through that, blocked the entire channel. Then they took it up and down several times. The skipper had decent control, but the person assisting him kept doing strange things. He seemed to be drunk. The weather was great, though, and all ended well.

@@KarlmarkInternational major mistake unexperienced skipper do is to drop anchor using the windlass. your anchor will never touch down where you want, as the windlass' speed is too low, while your bow will be moving around even with very low wind. also chain release must be independent of the windlass, as it has to match the speed of the boat in reverse, so you have no unwanted pull of the chain on the bow, (unless of course you want it to straighten the course parallel to the next boat). the right maneuver is: disengage the chain from the windlass, drop anchor in one shot until it hits the bottom, then control the chain release pressing with your foot on the davit; release as much as the boat speed requires. I've rarely seen dropping anchor properly and this is the origin of many missed moorings.

In situation, it would be helpful for the helmsperson to switch his position at the wheel when sailing backwards to the dock. It steers like a car. And since there's no wind/headwind when backing up, he doesn't have to adjust his course when starting the last 50m or so. His anchor is now not dropped straight in front of him. It's way off to port, and with some 'luck' on top of the anchors of the yachts docked on the port side of his boat... Hafenkino! (Harbor Theatre) is a wonderful German word for watching this.. We've seen similar situations in Greece. We have moved to Croatia now: no tangled anchor lines; they have mooring balls in Croatia. Still, a lot can go wrong, picking up a mooring ball... My wife always wants to help (RYA Offshore since the early 90s) but I've threatened to deflate the dinghy.🤣 And after all these years of sailing together, my wife and I still seriously evaluate 'special situations': moments when we had to switch to plan B, so to speak. Tasks are clearly divided between us: engine and helm/steering = for her. All other on-deck jobs = me. Works 100% of the time.

Why would you call something the perfect mooring when it is just the way it should always be done ? This is in Paxos and we come there a lot, but never during the charter season. Why not ? Because there are too many, so called sailors, who have no clue how to moor their boat. This is Med mooring and the idea is that you drop your anchor straight in front of your boat, so not across other boats anchors, you reverse into your berth and tie off. That is all it is, nothing more, nothing less. Problem is that, during the season, there are many people who know how to sail, but they don't know how to moor a boat Med style, so that always turns into a mad house around 4 PM. People come into port with their boat and many of them just drop their anchor wherever they are, glad the anchor is in the water and they tie the boat off. As a result they cross anchor chains, sometimes 3 in a row and everybody gets upset. Then they refuse to correct the mistake, because they have no idea how to do it in the first place. So next morning it is a total mess, chains and anchors are dragged up and the shouting starts. These guys realised the first time the anchor was not at the correct position, so they raised the anchor, then proceeded to drop it in the correct place and finished mooring their boat. That is the way it is done and that is the way it should always be done. So am happy to see some people who actually know how to do it properly.

@@KarlmarkInternational charter season starts basically in May, but then we are talking perhaps 1/4 of the fleet. The further you come into the season the more boats there will be. The end of the season is October / mid November, but already by end of September there are less charter boats out. That makes Paxos much more quiet, so easier to find a spot in the port. During the high season it is basically all bets are off, boats race to the port to get a spot. During the season obviously everything is open, but later in the season the less frequented places close first and by December most of the places are closed. Several bars / restaurants will remain open for the locals and there will always be a couple of live aboards in port. When you come in April / May (depending on the weather) Paxos is opening up again. Biggest problem for many boats is finding water and electricity. In May none of the poles were functioning, so if you don't have a generator, solar panels or a large battery bank it can be a problem. Cards for the electricity poles are being sold by one of the bars, but many times they don't have them since the charter boats forget to return the cards. In all Paxos is nice to be in port in April, May, beginning of June and then mid-September until the end of the season. One thing to take into consideration is to not moor your boat where the day trip boats moor their boats. You will be asked to leave very early in the morning, so unless you plan to leave early I would moor the boat somewhere else. Another spot to avoid is the north side of the inner bay. There are a couple of bars that have loud music until 4 in the morning (or later). Better go to the southern part of the port, there you will find a few restaurants (which are good), but no music until 3 or 4 Am.

@@KarlmarkInternational Is possible, Corfu is close by, but the day tours won't start on a daily basis until well in the season. There are ferries every day and this city is more or less the capital of the island, so perhaps that is why a few places remain open. And of course the supermarkets, some other shops will simply remain open. After all, the locals also need their supplies. 😀

I'd like to see you play piano for the first time while pros laugh at you. On another note- it would be interesting to know what kind of rudder this boat has. I reversed one unbalanced and it kicked like a mule.
