I know the man that made the Rex Antenna. I know that he worked very hard to make an antenna that would outlast all the others. The construction tells me that I would have to buy 3 Wolf River Coil antenna's for the cost of one Rex antenna. I like his construction better than anything else I have seen. Thank YOu for the review Michael.

I love watching your reviews... I can rely on them being a no B.S. zone of useful information, thanks! I really like the "next level up" construction of this antenna, and your Chevy versus Cadillac analogy is spot on. Sometimes you just feel like spoiling yourself by splurging on a Cadillac. 73 KN6VMK

One question - how does this coil stand up to rain - heavy, unrelenting RAIN? Can you leave it set up 24/7 no matter what the weather? Or is this just a temporary - 'put up, operate, take down' only when the weather is fine & dry? Living on the west coast in a temperate rain forest, we can get 2 solid weeks of rain here. My CHA MPAS 2.0 (in the vertical configuration) has been left out in my back yard for over a couple of months now, with no moisture problems at all (the coax connection has been covered in Vaseline to keep moisture out, but that's it).

Thanks for the review, I like hearing about new antennas coming out. I think of the Wolf River coil antenna as the jeep to the new shiny antenna. Although I like the mil whip antenna, they are very rugged, however, it’s nice to also have a telescoping antenna that can be tuned with the height. As one of the other commenters said, I think I’ll stick with the Wolf River coil for the money at this point. But I’m open to seeing more of this antenna in the future.

I do love the rugged nature of the mil-whip. They also pack easier. Collapsed, the mil-whip is shorter than a 213 inch collapsable whip. I've used one with my WRC prior to this review, but it does lock you into the 15 meter band and lower.

Thanks for the review. There seems to be a reaccusing theme in your review, High Quality. There is always something to be said for great quality. I hope to see one of these antennas at the Greater Houston HamFest as I understand REZ Antenna will be there. I am an addicted POTA activator. I use a Yaesu 891 and the ATAS 120 mounted on my truck, but the ATAS 120 is what it is, it does a good job for quick activations, but there are times when I want to extend the activation. The Ranger 80 will be in my POTA gear if it is half as nice in person as it is in your review.

On very big difference with REZ and Wolf River Coil is the price! REZ is like MPAS quality, thus more money. For those who want to start with a coil antenna, Wolf River is best to start. As for vertical antenna, best is making a 1/4 wave ground plane - very inexpensive.

Thanks Mike. I looked it up and only got as far as the price. For most portable hams we're a pretty innovative group (and here's my prediction), so don't expect this to kill Wolf River any time soon. There are a TON of easy to deploy alternative antennas for far less moolah than this. Plus, after the event you can afford to eat at a nice sit down restaurant as a reward for not buying this. Don't get me wrong, it is pretty to look at.

Interesting review. With the exception of the coil, this is very similar to the CHA MPAS 2.0. In fact, it uses almost the exact same brass vertical segments. One difference, the MPAS 2.0 is multiband - no need to move a coil tap. Other than that they are very similar, including the ground spike. These portable verticals do get a good signal out. With the MPAS 2.0 in a similar vertical configuration in the middle of my back yard, I've worked Alaska, Japan, Hawaii, Costa Rica, New Zealand & Uruguay with 100 watts.
@BryanGrigsby

I have the WRC and the CHA MPAS 2.0. I can tell you, the WRC radiates far more efficiently than the MPAS does with their balun. The WRC isn't quite as high speed sexy looking, but it works a lot better.
@mikeymouse4629
@mikeymouse4629 Жыл бұрын
@@BryanGrigsby Interesting.... How did you determine that the "WRC radiates far more efficiently than the MPAS does" ? Did you actually take field strength measurements at a fixed distance and angle off the horizontal, or did you just get better DX contacts? Because the latter is subject to so many atmospheric variables that you can't use it as a meaningful comparison. Also, don't forget that the MPAS is 'multi-band' without having to change coils, or adjust the tap position on the coil - I have left mine out in the elements 24/7 for over 2 months now (rain, sun, snow), and I don't have to go outside to adjust it when I change bands. I'd like to try some antenna tests myself - i.e. does the CHA cap hat half way down actually lower the 'takeoff angle' for better signal strength at the 'sweet spot' of 5 degrees (Callum's angle for optimum DX). So please let me know.
@BryanGrigsby
@BryanGrigsby Жыл бұрын
@@mikeymouse4629 From numerous deployments of both antennas, signal reports from QSOs, both near and DX, to digital mode propagation. No doubt, MPAS is more rugged. CHA uses the same balun design for all of their end fed antennas, from the EMCOM to the MPAS, both the low and high power models and Tactical Delta loop. I have all of these antennas. Sweep them with an SWR meter, and they are all suspiciously low across a very wide bandwith. Where as you can deploy the WRC with almost no loading coil with a long whip and the right radials, making it truly resonant, and not relying on gimmicks to get a low SWR. The CHA antennas being multi-banded is actually the characteristic or compromise that makes them less efficient. Also, if I was going to deploy the MPAS or the like, I'm not chasing DX. I'm working NVIS contacts. It's intended to be a mil type of antenna, not to work across the ocean, but to work local HF.
@mikeymouse4629
@mikeymouse4629 Жыл бұрын
@@BryanGrigsby Thank you for that information. My intent was for an 'all-band' man-portable (i.e. 'bug out') antenna that could be left out in the elements, and could work most bands (160-10m) without changing coils. I understand that it's not a 'DX' machine, but in the vertical config (21' high with a CHA cap hat) I have been able to work DX from Alaska, Japan, Hawaii, Costa Rica, New Zealand, Canary Islands, and of course, Uruguay . I'm on the west coast. The 'black box' balun/unun does seem to dip around 20m, but even on 80 up to 10 the internal ATU on the IC 7300 can tune it.

Great review Michael. Very honest and to the point. It looks like a very good antenna with performance right in there with the WRC and Buddistick. As you stated, the price is it's major downfall. Great quality and build, but I don't need that level of toughness and precision in a portable vertical. Looks a little on the heavy side also. I drive a Caddy, but my antennas tend to be on the simple, but still rugged side ( I use the Buddistick and Ham Sticks for portable vertical use and will someday buy a WRC). This antenna will not be one I would buy, but someone with more disposable income than myself may very well want this. Very nice to look at also. Not that it makes a huge difference, but I can get my Buddistick very close to a 1 to 1 match easily and quickly. Being slightly anal, I like that.

I wouldn't take my higher than anticipated SWR readings as a downfall of the antenna. I think it had more to do with the location, frozen soil, and poor ground conductivity. I run into the same challenges with the WRC in the winter time.

For 40m or 80m(?) I can understand using base loaded whip. But for 20m and up, I don't. A full quarter wave vertical using 6m squid seems better. You use a PVC pipe pushed into the ground with three guide ropes and some stakes as the mount for the squid pole. For the radials take 5 lengths of wires and solder them to together with a connector. Then make 4 sets. Very quick to put down 20 X 3m radials. Yes it might take 10-15 minutes to put up but it won't be as compromised as a base loaded whip. Or am I missing something. For 40m and 80m you might be aiming for nvis contacts. In which case a vertical isn't the best option.

I've never had issues with the wolf river coil in the rain, so the same should apply to this antenna. But if you are concerned, I've had other tell me that you can make a rain hood out of a 2-liter drink bottle. Cut off the bottom and thread the whip through the hole at the top.
@rezantenna
@rezantenna Жыл бұрын
Yes, the Ranger 80 can be used in the rain. The unit is weather resistant except for the coax connection. If you intend to leave it out in the rain for an extended period of time then you’ll need to seal the coax connection. Michael’s suggestion about the 2 liter “rain hat” is a great idea. The rain can cause crackling on the coil as the water runs over the turns. This would eliminate that. 73 - W5REZ

Very interesting antenna. I do like the look of the antenna's construction and that the military whip. The angle the accessory legs of the [Z]Pod makes it sit a lot higher than a Wolf River Coil. Not crazy about that though, but not a deal breaker & that it's still an accessory for the antenna. I do like that that bag looks smaller than the GIANT over-sized bag that the Chameleon MPAS 2.0 comes in (later versions). And 5 stars for the bag coming in some sort of Multicam Black (not sure if it's official Multicam Black, but close enough)! Steep price at $525 to start. Nice review. Honest review. But a vertical antenna is a vertical antenna so there’ll be no significant performance enhancement. And unless someone has evidence of the WRC falling apart after years of use (not heat related as the platinum address that) I couldn’t justify the higher price. I have multiple wolf river coils, whips, tripods, etc. Using 15ft radials, usually 16 of them, wrc tripod and the rez adapter or my homebuilt groundstake, I commonly see swr of like 1.12 1.07, or 1.2 at worst. Have you seen swr in that low of range in the field with this rez unit? My biggest complaint about wrc’s is that they all seem to be crooked on the ends (couplers & threads not perfectly inline), but they function great and repeatably perform. This drives my mechanical ocd crazy, when screwing them together and having the whips at wonky angkes etc..

My testing was very limited with the Ranger 80 as it was a demo unit that I returned to the manufacturer after producing the video. I wish I had more time to use it in more locations to get a better understanding of its performance. But my impressions are that it worked quite similarly to what I would expect the WRC to function. One of the issues we have in Wisconsin is poor ground conductivity (due to the large amount of granite bedrocks). In one location I had a hard time getting the Ranger 80 much lower on 1.7:1 on 20 meters. But the next day in another location, I had no problems tuning it below 1.2:1. (once I get down below 1.3:1, I don't fiddle any more to get a better match). The only difference between the two would be the soil composition. The two locations are separated by about 50 miles but are geologically quite different. What works best for me with the WRC, and I know the Ranger 80 would function similarly, is to use more shorter radials than less longer ones. The Ranger came with 4 30 foot radials, so I deployed it in the standard configuration per the manufacturer. Expanding the radial network, or using the ground screen for that matter, would have made a big difference. I love the Wolf River coils, but I agree with you, the fit and finish is their biggest downside.

Looks like a WRC. I hated my WRC. A pain to tune. Sold all my portable antennas and bought a MPAS and TDL and never looked back. Performs just as good if not better and it's set and forget.

How does the WRC with tripod compare to this with tripod in terms of weight? If you were a SOTA guy considering a vertical b/c you have no trees at a summit, weight is going to be a big factor.
@KB9VBRAntennas
@KB9VBRAntennas Жыл бұрын
The Ranger 80 coil weighs 3.5 lbs, which is almost double that of the Silver Bullet 1000. This wouldn't be my first choice for SOTA. If you want to stay lightweight and have 10-40m operation, I'd consider the Wolf River Sporty Forty, 213 inch whip, and either a ground spike or WRC's tripod.

@@KB9VBRAntennas That was my suspicion, I have the SB 1000 too. The Ranger 80 does look really nice though.

I wonder what would happen if you added banana connectors to the end of each radial and then have both ends of each radial plugged into the base.
@davewhite7679
@davewhite7679 Жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thought. That should have an effect similar to cutting the radial's length in half and perhaps doubling the radials at the same time. 👍 KZ9V

Michael. I'm curious. Was this the antenna you were using when I worked you on 20 meters on 2/17? I was at 1100 feet elevation mobile stationary with a 20 meter ham stick. Your signal was solid 59 in south central PA. 73 Matt W3MMW Edit Whoops I should have waited 2 more minutes. I saw my call sign on the map. Hope to hunt you again in the future. 73!

Why do these guys and Wolf River use stainless steel in the coil??? I know about the benefits of stainless steel but the resistance of it in the coil is a real performance killer. I had a WRC Silver Bullet at the coil measured 10 times the DC resistance in the 80m position than the coil on my Hustler 80 m resonator measured. Punch those numbers into an efficiency calculator and see what happens..... not good !!!! I love the concept of the antenna but a better material needs to be used for the coil. For the higher bands where less of the coil is used, these are decent, but when you move to the lower bands and use more of the coil the shortcomings show up.

It has a 3/8-24 stud on the bottom, that's what is screwed into the tripod mount. It can be screwed into any 3/8-24 mount.

Makes the wrc look pretty shabby. 33 foot radials... That is a deal breaker for some Pota spots I do. Probably could get away with 17's.

These last few months I’ve been demoing and reviewing a wide variety of base loaded coil vertical antennas. Wolf River is certainly the value leader in that space and is still a solid choice.

Michael I normally like your videos but I'm going to take exception with this expensive system that cannot even do 10m at equivalent power handling. It's got bling, that's not Cadillac or even ruggedized like a Chameleon system. It's almost like your doing a hard sell on this unit and it comes across to the viewer as disengenuous and contrived. We need to nip this growing trend of great operators like yourself pushing products to us that are not a good choice for the average guy. Wolf River Coils and all the systems and replacement parts is the best choice for all of us. They earned that position with genuine desire to improve ham radio. I don't have their products and would love to use them. I'm just another old radio guy that can only afford what can be built on my bench. Wolf River Coils actually builds their gear cheaper than I could and that says a lot. I think the buy line for this is video as a Wolf River killer is not being honest. That's my opinion brother and I hope you take it as constructive criticism and not negatively. We all trust you greatly and would hope you consider your reputation in all reviews.

It’s not even close to a WRC killer. The price is it’s own killer. They make (by the look of it) a gorgeous product but who can afford that? I’m running a hybrid buddistick pro with a WRC mini replacing the Buddi coil. Which I’m finding does the job well. The buddistick does ok but the coil is too fragile and difficult to adjust the taps.
