Is This Abandoned Railroad Crossing Being Restored ?

The last 12 miles of the CSX Homestead Subdivision were officially abandoned on March 2019, however at this Krome Avenue railroad crossing there are some signs that it might be coming back to life after years on inactivity. The original cantilever and signals were removed here in 2018 and replaced with a tracks out of service sign. In 2020, there was a brand new grade crossing and set of pedestrian crossing gates installed that weren't there before. Why would CSX spend all this money on crossing gates signals and equipment for an unused line or one they don't have plans for?
This line was built in 1926 by Seaboard Air Line to bring passenger service to Homestead, Florida and connected with the Miami extension of the Overseas Railway parallel to US 1 in FL City. In 1929, it became a freight line and 2016 was the last time it saw activity; removal of the stored hoppers on the line.

Less than an hour ago, I got first hand news from GCRM that the Homestead line is being reactivated. This is from 2 employees there running SW1500 #2. Lumber company is the first customer and 3 more likely.

Railrol, thanks as always for the videos! No one does it like you, Jawtooth, and Jason Asselin! I am skeptical about CSX doing this. Without someone else paying for this, or a large customer appearing, CSX would let it rot. They don’t care.

Any sign of progress is a positive. CSX is either reviving the track for itself or leasing the line to another company.

On the Homestead Wye, the tracks were sprayed only about 2 loco's lengths past the East switch. The on track equipment had to go off track between NW 8th St and NW 15th as the tracks still have the displaced rails there. And the tracks from Mowry to NW 8th St were not removed before being buried in the chipped asphalt/stone mix. I went by there Friday and no new activity.

I’ve heard that Miami-Dade County was in talks with CSX about the possibility of purchasing the Homestead subdivision for the purpose of a commuter line that would interchange with Metro-Rail. Since the county ruined the opportunity to connect to Homestead when they torn up the FEC tracks south from the dadeland south station and turned it into a useless busway, instead of completing the Metro-Rail to Homestead.

What a difference 21 months makes? Today's views of the Krome Avenue railroad crossing are entirely different than your November 2021 views were that you inserted into this video. Here is hoping that something wonderful is going to take place to revitalize the CSX Homestead Subdivision.

Just curious, but has anything been said that SFRTA might be looking at this line to expand TriRail down south? Or the other possibility may be that CSX might want to sell its Miami operations to a short line. Who knows what's going on, but it's weird that the entire abandoned portion has had all the weeds cut from it. Last thought would be that they plan to rip up the rails and salvage all the infrastructure for scrap.

Last I heard a couple of months ago the TPO was looking into making an agreement with CSX to use the Homestead sub for Tri-Rail.

@traintrak I have always said that it's a waste of resources to let this line rot. TriRail or anything that can run on rails can benefit from this. While the tracks do pass through some rural parts of Dade County, its the part from sw 137 Ave north, along with an intermodal terminal in Homestead that can make this line viable. At the very least, how about a light rail line?

@@markydee48 In my personal opinion, it would probably make more sense to have Tri-Rail for a few reasons. Firstly, the distance between each station would make more sense if they were commuter-spaced stations. Also, Tri-Rail already has the rolling stock they need for service, with more coming. If Tri-Rail were to service this line, I would imagine that they would need to double-track most of the line and put PTC in place. Also, with all this weed-clearing that was done, they replaced the SW 200 ST crossing with a brand new concrete surface, so it looks like there's a possibility that freight trains might come back.

Very interesting sight! They will either open that line again or CSX was bored and decided to spend tax dollars cleaning up the track and installing crossing signals. 😄Funny how someone threw Santeria on that abandoned track thinking a train would pass by it. lol

Hopefully someday something productive will happen. It almost makes one Wonder would CSX have to run an actual train here to prove the trackage is intact and runnable to keep a tax rate low? Otherwise is this being done so a prospective buyer can see what shape the right-of-way is in and how many sacrifices per square yard you can get in there.

I betcha that they have to upkeep tracks to keep (I e. not lose) the right of way or someone bought the right of way one way or another. It could have been a tax sale too. A title search could expose more details. I want to come down there and have brunch at the place next to the airport.
