Is this bargain jazz bass still a bargain? || Squier Vintage Modified 70s Jazz Demo / Review

Is the Squier Vintage Modified 70s Jazz Bass a bargain, or just basic? How does Fender get so much tone into their budget line of basses? WithIn the years since Fender launched the Squier Vintage Modified series, many other makers like Ibanez, Yamaha, Sire, and Harley Benton have launched budget basses with ever improving specs and value. Is the Squier still a good bass to buy in 2019?

I got a 2nd hand one of these for a weekly jam night - I don't like using expensive basses there. Mine was in mint condition - needed new strings and a set up which is what I always do anyway. One fret was slightly high but only very slightly and a fret eraser sorted that. The one big problem with this bass is the body - that soft maple is REALLY soft. If you tighten the screws you'll strip it in no time. When I replaced the bridge for a Wilkinson vintage I drilled out the screw holes and inserted hard maple dowels before redrilling the holes - that worked fine. I did the same for the strap buttons. I also ended up sanding the back of the neck as it was too glossy for my taste. Overall though it's a great bass with a wide variety of tone. I'd recommend it as a second bass or as a home noodling bass.

I have this exact bass and I love it. Only complain is that it is too heavy and my shoulder really feels it towards the end of a 3 hour gig. Too bad they've discontinued the VM lineup.

Glad you got one while you could. Definitely go with a wide strap or maybe even the Gruv Gear duo strap.
