I just discovered the Great Brazilian singer/musician/producer ED MOTTA, his brilliant music, and his library of incredible bass lines!
I'll break down, arguably, his MOST famous bass line ("Marta" aka "Smile" from his 2013 release, AOR), show you how it's played, show you who played it (Mr. Groove), explain why it's so popular in Brazil, and explain how Ed himself comes up with most of the bass lines on his records.
It's part Jazz, part Bossa Nova, part R&B, part Funk, even part Yacht Rock and it's incredible. Check it out.

As a Brazilian musician, I'm really honored and proud of watching this video about Ed Motta. He's definitely a great musician and not acknowledged enough in Brazil nowadays for the fact that music in Brazil has been going through a bit of controversy, having great unappreciated talented musicians. Ed Motta's music is high standard and definitely has its space guaranteed in the business, forever. You should listen to his 1st album with Conexão Japery. It's amazing!!!!

Thank you so much for this Ed Motta's bass coverage I just found. I enjoyed so much your rare one on Donald Fagen "The Nightly" bass podcast, and now you've come at Ed Motta, whom I first found on his "Dwitza" album, is the connection I had long been looking for between Brazilian jazz and Steely Dan. So, "AOR" is indeed a gem for me, that I also bought the Japan bonus version.

Ed Motta's great. Tons of Steely Dan influence, so no surprise I like his stuff. The entire "AOR" album this song is from is particularly wonderful. The next song on the album after this one, "1978/Leave the Radio On" has killer bass on it too (and some really cool Rhodes licks). Also, check out the beautiful song "Dondi," where the bass line has this really fun move up an octave for popped hammer-on that is straight out of Boz Scaggs's Lowdown.

Im always happy when i see Ed Motta being recognized. He surely is one of the best musicians, composers alive in the world today. Ive seen a lot of comments saying Ed Motta has brazilian music as his main influence, even MPB. Although there are a LOT of good brazilian artists. This information is not correct at all. Ed Motta is mainly jazz influenced and HEAVILY soaked in North American music. Considering the collection of records he has, brazillian music is the least influences he has. Yes Ed Motta is Tim Maias nephew, but they come from different places regarding music taste and music formation.

Great video, he's a true legend. His 91 Album "Entre e Ouça" is filled with killer basslines and a ton of other reasons to be listened to as well. I remember him saying in an interview that the bassist from this era of his carreer, Bom Bom, is the guy who actually tought him how to think about basslines, his biggest influence in this area. The title track "Entre e ouça" and also "Se até as 11" are the ones that strike me as the most interesting basswise.

Pleased to bits to see this video. Motta will forever be hailed as one of the Brazilian greats. I’m possibly an even bigger fan of his work than that of his uncle, the great Tim Maia himself. You were spot on in your analysis of ‘Marta’, and AOR is perhaps his most consummate album. I also adore ‘1979’. A must-hear track his is ‘Deluxe Refuge’ if you haven’t checked it out. Utter gold, both rhythmically and harmonically. On Poptical, another ingeniously groovy track is ‘Que Bom Voltar’. We teach, and we learn. Spot on, brother! This is the essence of Music.
