For the last 3 years, we’ve put our electric outboard through the ringer. So what’s the verdict? In this episode, we tell you what we like and don’t like about our ePropulsion Spirit Outboard, how we power it from the sun, and pick our winner: gas or electric?
Hope you enjoy!

Glad to hear you love your e-Propulsion. I have the first gen one and I love it for all the reasons you mentioned. I have a wooden tender and about a mile to my mooring but knowing the engine won’t break down and will always start is such a relief. I had some really sketchy and dangerous trips back from my boat after my old petrol OB conked out so many times and usually at a critical time. I would love to upgrade to the newer model at some point but happy for now. As you say it would be cool to have some more HP but life’s too fast as it is. Your kid is too cute and what a life she is having and with both of you around. Safe travels. Andy UK

Based on the size of the dinghy, the precious cargo you carry; I believe that 3 hp is sufficient for your needs at this time. Three hp also forces you to scrutinize your day trip plans before you leave the boat or dock - weather changing, etc. My two cents. Tossing in another nickel for inflation, wait until the baby is a little older for a bigger dinghy and motor. By then technology changes will catch up and you'll be ready for ePropulsion's new 10 hp motor that they're working on. BTW - great video, I always enjoy your videos. I have a suggestion, how about a video about what you go through to create a 20 minute video now versus pre baby. That would be some heck of a comedy show. All the best.

I recently added an EM RT 160 to my pontoon effectively making it a hybrid. We absolutely love it, especially with our 6mo old daughter, since there are no exhaust fumes. Other advantages include silence for conversations, infinite sped control down to 0mph for docking, sneaking up in wildlife, not having to turn motor on to reposition, ability to turn motor to one side and use forward / reverse of electric remote to keep boat pointing one direction for sunsets, etc.

I purchased an ePropulsion Spirit 1.0 Plus over the winter and have started using it during cruising system. Great to hear that you still like your outboard after 3 years. So far, so good for ours. Love that we can store it on the boat and not have to worry about gas and oil leaking everywhere. Very easy to start up and get going. We also bought the solar charger, which we connect to our 350w panels. Thank you again for your insights!

5-20-24 In pursuit of buying a new dingy for their 2024 Hybrid HH44OC Catamaran several electric outboard engines were tested extensively by Jason and Nikki Wynn. They wanted to see if they were better then their old gas outboard...and the answer is yes. They agree with you and went electric. No more oil changes or trying to find gasoline on the tiny islands in the south pacific. Same for their two hybrid Catamaran engines that can run off their battery bank or diesel fuel if absolutely required . No question you bought the right dingy engine .

I think I was a bit harsh on him, but it clearly seemed that his motor looked like it was abused by gorilla’s for years and years, when it was only two years old. I was just talking to E Propulsion a few weeks ago about two questions I have. First how do you secure the battery to the motor when you leave your dinghy at the dock? The second question is E Propulsion says not to leave the shaft in the water for extended time. If you tilt it up in can be hazardous for someone coming in to a dock. So I asked if you could tilt the motor up and spin it around so the shaft would be in the boat. E Propulsion doesn’t have an answer for either question. Hopefully they will solve these issues.

Thats a positive 👍🏼 result for e motors ..especially given that you guys dont have the charging advantage of a cat .. If it could regen under under sail the one on sophisticated lady ..does this they hang it from the back of the yatch to recharge under sail when solars reduced or nil such as night sailing and it even acts as an emergency limp home motor.. it is more powerful but its been tested and they are so hassel free generally... a rim driven motor prop set up is more efficient still and protected. Use the aux input jump start connector plugs they use on competition vehicles ..they are widely available and designed to be safe and easy additions to a battery box or into body panels . And the dont involve that expensive word marine.😉

The electric outboard looks great. I especially like the fact that the more recent model does regeneration. This would probably make the motor the ideal auxiliary propulsion for a small sailboat or sail dinghy. They could sometimes recharge the batteries while under sail. When I saw the manatee I had to ask, does it have an option for a ducted propellor?

We have been in the Bahamas for 4 months. I would of loved to have an electric outboard (almost bought one) but with my new love for pole spearfishing an electric would be out of the question. We travel many miles to find best fishing spots and go in and out of inlets with a lot of current.
@kevinfisher1345
@kevinfisher1345 2 жыл бұрын
Not sure how it would be out of the question. It easily will go 20 miles or more. As they stated in the video it will run for 6 hrs before needing charging. So I doubt you are traveling 6 hrs per day to find fishing spots. That would be practically all day with no fishing, or very lil fishing. As to strong currents, yea the one they have is not ideal for that. But that is easy to solve, you just get a bigger model. Like equivalent to 5hp would suffice. They have outboard electric motors that will power a full sailboat, so that should not prevent it from being in question or not.

@@sailorjohn2224 I already learned to speak spanish many decades ago mate. But IF you are going to find yourself on your way to Cuba due to strong currents, you would with combustion outboard engine as well. Not sure what part of you can get electric outboards equivalent to commonly used HP combustion engines that you did not get. As stated 3 - 5HP is pretty common for dinghies and you can get that equivalent with electrics. And that is plenty sufficient for 5 - 6 knot currents, which is pretty strong for currents. Guess it depends upon the size of the craft though, but fudge there have been plenty of people with only 5HP outboards cruising all around the world in up to 30+' sailboats. So if you can do it in that size of sailboat, it is much easier to be done in a smaller craft like a dinghy.

I also wish there was an answer for this. Maybe outboards are rated at the engine and lose more down to the prop. A lot of people use simpler Minn-Kota but they design theirs for 2 knots except full throttle is faster. You're supposed to match ft-lbs to boat weight. EPropulsion designs prop for more speed.

And you have a pretty small dinghy so battery life isn't an issue. On my big sailboat, they did not last very long. Frankly, my view is get an electric motor for your sailboat, and have a gas motor for the dinghy which can be backup propulsion and the motor is easily replaced when they get old (3 years is old..)

I have a fairly new Yamaha F2.5 four stroke but it would be fine for a while then fail, I just never knew. Usually fuel issues and that’s despite running the car dry every time and using an additive as modern fuel has so much ethanol. I think I would trust my old Seagull more than the Yamaha but then the e-Propulsion is perfect.

Nice vid! I'm not a fan of the e-motors but you're converting me. No bueno on the old cigarette lighter 12V port. Love the family - you guys do it well! Serious Q: Can you lock the e-motor And Battery to the dingy (I think yes)?

Great video, as always and a helpful review of electric outboards real world 'behaviour'...other channels have them too, torqueedo being the main one and everyone seems to have the same enthusiasm for them... Maybe one day you'll swap out the big smelly diesel (I can't stand the smell, it makes me seasick). No more temperamental Mister Beke... We have a Beta 30 on our boat that is oil/diesel drip free as it's new (came with our recent boat purchase) and it's plenty powerful enough for our 31' Westerly and runs all day, quite literally. The only way an electric main motor makes sense is if you live aboard, are not in a hurry, have plenty of solar (I like the regen of the outboard), a good battery bank and have reliable sunshine...the UK not so much...however, having access to shore power would make it work...🤔 Keep up the good work and enjoying your lifestyle 👍

@@nick.caffrey I'd rather go with a shaft drive, like Rigging Doctor, than saildrive like Uma, although it works great for them... Would be lovely to have a boat where the batteries were part of the ballast, rather than the load: a sealed insert into the keel...?

Looking on the web for the battery size for this motor it seems it is a LIPO 1276 w/h 45.6v. Maybe I’ve got this wrong but I make it a max of 4.2hrs running time at 300 watts. Are you sure you get 6 to 8hrs? The weight at 8.7kg seems on the light side when I compare it to the trolling motor I use being a 12v 100ah lithium battery so about the same energy capacity @ 1300wh and I know high voltage can be more efficient but it surprises me it would be that much.

Have you visited here: www.epropulsion.com/spirit-evo/ A lot of info relative to your comment. For inflatable dinghy, 1 battery will do everything you need. But it's much better to charge during the day as an extension of the house bank rather than at night draining the house bank. Thus the need for a 2nd battery as they have. For sailboat propulsion, weekend use and weekday charging would be most popular schedule. 1 battery needs to last 3 days, or about 3hrs. From my experience, 1400 lb boat, expect 150W. So 450 Wh needed for 1/2 hr trips in and out of Marina for the weekend. Pretty manageable.

Do they make solar panels to charge the battery while Im on an Island camping. Torqueedo have solar panels for their motor and wonder if Epro has the same?

E-propulsion besides the attached battery as it is now. They need to also create, a separate...much larger stand alone battery pack. That you could just lay in the bottom of the dinghy. And use an electric cable. To plug the auxiliary battery into the body of the propulsion unit. Such that....the bigger battery would exte d your range, and increase your speed, availability. Jeffery... ⚘

2 smaller as is, is much more versatile. And counting the charge time of the idle battery, a lot more range. Look how the dinghy is loaded with people, gear, provisions. Losing space to a battery pack is waste. Using batteries as a storage tank is a huge waste, same applies to EV.

@@artsmith103 Hi Art!!! Thanks for your thoughts!!! But absolutely not...that a separate stand aline takes up to much space. The point is....you don't have to have another auxiliary battery in the boat. Because you've still got the original battery 8nstalled, as you see now...on top of the outboard unit. You don't have to have that auxiliary battery in the boat!!!! B U T....if you need to go longer distances, against a wind, waves and current, in which you will most certainly have to go half or full throttle to maintain the same speed....then you can throw that bigger auxiliary battery in....which with the battery that's already on the outboard...you've got the power you need!!! And besides....I wasn't talking about them...for their dinghy!! As you will not...I said....EPROPULSION-the company. Should make this as an option that people can have!! I didn't say SOLIANOUS should build this auxiliary battery!! I said that EPROPULSION, the company should develop this. Because as they said, EPROPULSION is always looking to innovate new ideas!! Because with an auxiliary battery pack....EPROPULSION does have to create a brand new more powerful model...all they have to do is have a larger auxiliary battery pack. That all you have to do is... Grab the auxillary...throw it in the dinghy...plug it in, and suddenly your little electric outboard unit. Suddenly becomes bigger more powerful motor. I mean....I have a 62' ketch sailboat, we built in Seattle.. That I've lived on for over 10 years, and sailed 150,000 miles. From Seattle up to Alaska, down thru the canal; from S. AMERICA, thru the Carib. up and down the east coast many times. As I'm also a US Coast Guard 500 Ton Master Licensed Captain. And believe we....times come when your in a boat....and you gotta get there in horrible weather and seas. And their little dinghy was not overloaded when what other times requires. And again....I'm not suggesting Solianis build an auxiliary battery unit. I suggested that EPROPULSION creat this big battery auxiliary. As an option that they can sell....to different boats...for different needs. For Solianous....they're just in very calm waters, never venture far....so yeah!! They wouldn't need an auxiliary battery....BUT....other boats might!!!! And it would be a great option for EPROPSION to offer. That instead of having to spend big bucks to get a bigger eletrric outboard to have more power. For a far cheaper price....a person just buy a bigger auxiliary battery pack....to give their current outboard more power. Just throw it in the dinghy...plug it in...voila!!! MORE POWER, SCOTTY!! So....thanks Art, for your thoughts!!! Jeffery....⚘
