Everyone, write a Bible verse on a piece of paper. Congatulations, you have just made a new Biblical manuscript and therefore have made the Bible a little bit more reliable. What a time to be alive.

@Bible-ChristianI was in a religious school and they told us a story that there was a prison with hundreds of apostles or saints or whatever in it and they all wrote down exactly the same manuscript (the Bible) in their prison cells. That's the proof that the Bible is inspired by God. It's a nice story, but I think the preacher just made it up

@Bible-Christian you can’t demonstrate that the super natural exists, that a god exists, that this god cares to interact with humanity, that he communicated to prophets to write a book, etc. so why are you lying?

@Bible-Christian Oh, I don't mean making up a new verse, I mean creating new manuscripts of existing verses, which obviously are inspired.

Yes! The average person thinks of a manuscript as a handwritten, largely complete document (or piece of music). I was shocked when I learned that when it comes to Biblical manuscripts, tiny shards the size of credit cards are counted as manuscripts, the same as largely complete books and codices.

I mean, there are 1,757 manuscript sources for the Iliad, so I guess we gotta just accept that Apollo sent a plague to afflict the Achaean army because Agamemnon refused to return Chryseis? And Achilles was an actual dude? And Aphrodite really did assist Paris in kidnapping Helen, the wife of the Spartan king Menelaus, and also to escape death at Menelaus' hands in the duel outside Troy to get him back into bed with Helen? ...I really need to write more copies of my autobiography where I conquered Mars and became king of the Solar System, if that's how it works.

Let's spin it this way. Dan is correcting the sinners who are bearing false witness. Aka one of the ten commandments. The video creator who lied is a sinner. A criminal. How can anyone trust that liar? If he wants to play bible is awesome, I have no problem applying the bible to the sinners. After all, isn't it the Christians who just want to sin? Why are they pointing out specks when they have tree trunks blinding their eyesight? I'm talking really really big tree trunks. The kind that are so massive that it would take days to cut through.

So an ancient text whose communication was prioritized by a continent-wide institution for over 1,000 years has remained fairly consistent since our first complete copies around the 4th century? What does that have to do with the validity of the ideas within? We have fairly consistent texts of the Iliad and the Odyssey going back farther than that, there aren't millions of people still worshipping Zeus and Apollo. "You need to obey _my_ preferred moral code because this book has been the same for over 1,000 years." Um, not if your book is full of nonsense I don't.

God sent mankind a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who suffered and died for our sins, was buried, and rose again the third day, all in accordance with the scriptures, that people might be forgiven their sins and reconciled to God through faith in him (see 1 John 4:14, 1 Corinthians 15:3-4, 2 Corinthians 5:18-21). All people are sinners and face God's judgment of death (see Romans 3:23, 6:23a). Out of love for men, God has provided one way for them to be spared his wrath, through faith in his Son and in his atoning sacrifice (see Isaiah 53). The big numbers in your comment should be understood in light of God's word: men are either on the broad road that leads to destruction or have entered on that narrow way that leads to life (see Matthew 7:13-14). Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father but by me (John 14:6).

The shirt is 😂. What surprises me among the readings of the Bible, here the gospels, is the particular position of the USA. The simple fact that many Bible scholars, sometimes self-proclaimed, support the innerance and univocality of the texts is, how to put it, strange for a European academic. This kind of approach is considered, I don't want to hurt anyone, propaganda. The overwhelming majority of Bible scholars, including theologians, share and support Dan's approach. The fact is that certain topics and approaches are typically an American field that in Europe would not even be considered meeting university requirements. However, for a historian of religions or a sociologist it is a fascinating subject of study.

How can anyone say the bible is reliable, let alone inerrant, when they can't even agree on how many books it has? Is it the 66 book bible that is reliable, or the 70 book bible, or the 72 (or 73; even Catholics can't agree on whether they split Jeremiah) book bible, or 81-88 books? It's comical to see these claims being made about a book that no one agrees on the basic structure and contents.

What does reliable mean in this context? Is there a technical definition for reliable? Edit: Another question is raised at the end. What does the Bible have to do with “accountability to God”? That would be something between the individual and God. The Bible can’t force the individual to be accountable, no matter if it’s “reliable” or not. Or is the creator suggesting that the Bible contains the new contract that a Christian has agreed to when they become a Christian? (How many Christians read the Bible before agreeing to the new contract? How many have read the fine print or understand all the clauses of the contract? That’s the only sense I can tease out from the Bible making one accountable to God. If the New Testament is a contract, and the individual breaks the contract, God can make the individual accountable by enforcing the contract. How much of this is spelled out in the Bible and how much is just taking liberties with the text and/or making shit up?

There are some BIG textual pieces that are disputed. Like the appearance of the risen Jesus to his disciples in Mark or The story of the adulteress ("Let he who is without sin") in Matthew or Paul saying to Timothy that women shouldn't speak in church or that all scripture is inspired. And of course we have very little to suggest that revelations was the same author as any other book and is not reasonably written by any "special" person. If you removed every verse that is disputed in one way or another or is most most likely a forgery like 2nd Timothy. You'll end up with a very short text and it will be missing many of the concepts(maybe not whole doctrines) that Christians rely on. But Dan is right on this one. Its not like the trinity, original sin, immaculate conception, immortal soul, rapture, layers of heaven and hell, biblical innerrancy, anti-abortion, homophobia and saint-hood are in the text anyways, so its probably not gonna make a difference.

When one begins to really dig into the text of the entire Bible, it becomes fairly obvious that the conceptualization of God has developed over the centuries into the doctrine we have today about the personality and attributes of that one God. Starting from a number of gods, over time the ideas about God have been simplified and somewhat streamlined into omni-characteristics, the ultimate superlatives. One of these seems to be that God is unchanging. What really denies this attribute to me is the fact that we have an OLD testament, the mechanics of which seem to have failed, and a NEW testament, with a newer, BETTER mechanism. Beyond this fact, there's the story of God being disgusted with the (unexpected?) failure of (almost all of) his original batch of image-bearing critters, and a mind to either trash the whole batch, or at least keep some of the better examples and begin again. Would an omni-everything deity need to do that? These are the kinds of thoughts that have been coming to me lately. I can't help but wonder if the whole edifice of Christian theology is as rickety as it seems to be, and the only thing holding it up is the reluctance of a LOT of believers and apologists to let it collapse and then start over with something different that recognizes the way the biblical corpus has developed over time.

0:09 I've said it before, and I'll say it again. You don't have 8 500 manuscripts, you have 8 500 hand-written copies.

I wonder - is there less variance in the text of various books of the new testament than there are in the text of the books of Euclid's Elements? Or De Rerum Natura? Or Commentarii de Bello Civili? I would expect that, with items requiring less doctrinal interpretation might have fewer edits - of course, I would expect some variation since these were all copied by hand for centuries. What I am getting at is the claim that the Bible has been transmitted with greater fidelity than any other ancient document. Of course - that is, in one sense, absolutely wrong, since we have a number of original ancient documents that we can just look at (inscriptions in stone, all of the cuneiform tablets, etc.) But - for documents that we don't have originals for, how close do we get? When I look at my critical edition of the Iliad, there's pages and pages of alternate sources and notes on every page indicating variations. My Loeb edition of De Rerum Natura mentions a number of source copies, but notes are far fewer (not even every page). I am not sure that means much though - as critical apparati in various editions may not be exhaustive in any sense... And - how can one tell from something like Elements - when finding a Greek copy with any critical apparatus is very difficult (at least with the spare money I have to spend on my hobby).

Do you know why “De rerum natura” was preserved while the numerous texts of the atomists were thrown in the trash by Christians? One hypothesis is that it is in the form of a poem and that the censors of the time did not consider burning this heretical text... Unlike Celsus, The True Word survives exclusively in quotations from Contra Celsum, a refutation written in 248 by Origen of Alexandria. Censorship is made by idiotic persons...

I think they stop counting at around the year 1500, as that’s about when the printing press took over

I do not recall seeing him call out anyone by name. However, some of these folks definitely see his commentary on their material because some of them *have* called McClellan out by name and responded to his responses. Which he sometimes has responded to in turn. Look at his old ones or just stick around for awhile and you will occasionally see them.

Dan, I fail to understand why, when this subject of reliability of the NT comes up, that you are not mentioning the patristic writings of Clement, Ignatius and Polycarp. Don't these, to some extent fill in the gap you are mentioning? Would like to see you do a video on the patristic quotes to get your take on this

But this content creator _isn't interested_ in knowing the history or scholarship of the texts or the full story - the social and political environment the authors were writing in, the mythological/theological background that was shared over centuries in the Near and Middle East - I'd say he's mostly interested in his own status within his community and confirming the choices he's made.

No, there probably will never be proof. Photos, videos, audio recordings, anyone? Pierce reviewed? Well, probably billions of books are written, and most of them are stories invented by the writer. So, not a very strong case if you would defend it in court.
