I did this 15 years ago, but we didn't have chaeto reactors back then, just had to rely on GFO in the cannister. What's in your cannister by the way? I don't think chaeto really removes nitrate, far more likely your rock is doing that, but great for silicate and phosphate removal.

@@Mikeymikemike I'm just gathering information and still learning before jumping into the hobby. And then I've found your channel and the masterpiece you have there! As a newbie I'm getting more and more confused, I guess you understand me 😁 I still have no experience at all and the opinions I find are extremely opposite 🤔 About the skimmers.. reefers here tells me that they are a must. Since they supply oxygen to the water and not just filtering it. My question is.. in your opinion is it safe for a beginner to try your setup, and go even without a skimmer, since it seems way less effort maintaining it 🙃 Other than cleaning frequently the canister and reactor how often and what percentage you do your water changes?
@Mikeymikemike3 жыл бұрын
@@yanchevstanislav look at their aquarium and mine and decide for yourself :) There is a limit using canister filter. it only turns over 1500L per hour. So 2x or 3x system turnover is required. Maximum 400L aquarium is ok for a canister. You need to be on top of cleaning frequently (at least once a week) You would also need less fish load. Big fish produce large amounts of waste. But I would not put big fish into a medium/small aquarium. You don't have to search far to find successful aquariums without a skimmer. You can also find very good reefs using a skimmer. As for oxygen, a skimmer helps a lot but so does surface movement, chaeto, and corals. It is up to you. You decide. I mention in my video there are people who say "things will fail if you don't buy this or that..." That is the dogmatic attitude I mention. Proof is here.

@altops44902 жыл бұрын
Not in my experience. changing a sock or felt plate pad takes seconds. vs, what i just saw, and sumps have the benefits of other filtration options which make sumps more versatile, and convenient. Add algae scrubbers , mud, chateo , UV sterilizer, reactors, added GAS exchange is big plus. canisters don't compete. some sumps even host snails, crabs, brittle stars, sponges, shrimp, (fish)wrasse, feather dusters clams,sea grass, and plant algae ....waste control organisms...canisters can be supplemental but not reef ideal. In one of my tanks there's no mechanical filtration, the biological is so effective, there's no substantial presence of solid wastes anywhere, sump has mud in trays, and display has no sand bed. like a proper biosphere, your tanks biology should be capable of converting all waste. nano tanks excluded for size, but some get close. the goal is a tank where the only thing to do is top off, feed and scrap the display panels of film Calcareous algae, and even some can feed themselves.
@vaughanbj Жыл бұрын
Ok, so what about water chemistry? Youre running SPS so you need to have aome pretty stable parameters going on unless youre changing water weekly also... do you have an ATO? Are you dosing? Are you testing your water? Theres a ton more to keeping an SPS tank outside of the filter system.

Have you ever thought of a shadow box behind the tank? I’d be curious to see how you’d use it visually.

What do you mean by shadow box?

Hi Mike Mike! I really enjoyed your video, & I really like your filtration methods!can u tell me please, with running your cannister filter & chaeto reacter & also your tank, does it use a lot of electricity please?? 😀👍
@Mikeymikemike3 жыл бұрын
It all runs on the same pump so not much at all, the lights however are big users of power.

Tanks looks good. How long has it been up with the canister filter?
@Mikeymikemike3 жыл бұрын
This one for 7 months now. My previous one went for 2 years before switching to sump to give it a try.

Absolutely love your videos. I have an eheim Ecco pro 300 canister filter on my 125 litre reef tank. The filter has a pre filter which is great but then in the bottom filter basket I put a course sponge and some floss. Mechanical filtration, then in the middle basket I have aquaforest life bio, biological filtration and then in the top basket I have aquaforest phosphate minus layered between two pieces of floss, chemical filtration. The problem is after a few days the floss starts to get blocked and the filter keeps releasing bubbles into the aquarium. I then have to change all the pieces of floss after a few days, which means removing all the filter baskets to change the floss and because I’m taking the filter baskets out of the filter every few days I’m constantly disturbing the aquaforest life bio so the biological filtration is being disturbed and can’t do it’s job properly.

Perhaps remove the sponge and filter floss. What I do is put the gfo in a mix with carbon and place it in a media bag. That way you don’t need sponges or floss to trap it. It is much cleaner that way, Hope this helps :)

Mike have you ever had hair line algae if yes how you fix the issue?
@Mikeymikemike3 жыл бұрын
I’m sorry but I usually don’t get algae’s in my aquarium, my general advice is to remove as much of it as you can and then add things that will eat it or outcompete it. Best wishes!

There is a shop in Germany who promotes the same. It is called Fish and More. They are doing only this kind of filtration with marine tanks. And it works easily. You can see their videos on youtube.

would love to know the equipments you use: 1) 17mm lily pipes ? 2) 17mm flexible tubing (can't seem to find these anywhere) ? 3) what's that wavemaker/powerhead? 4) lights? I've just got the same waterbox (but 3ft), and looking to set it up very similar to this. and obsessively want that minimal/clean look you have too :)

I have this same exact filter for a mixed reef tank, just the larger 850 with Lily Pipes. I have constant micro bubbles going in. Have you seen this on your setup? I’ve reseated things, checked and lubricated o rings, etc. Thx!

Hi Mike, how are you managing water temperature? Is there any inline heater?
@Mikeymikemike3 жыл бұрын
You can see in the video, I mention it is a thermo, so the heater is in the filter too! How great is that!
