@@GameGuy53 there is a secret final boss with super sonic but its only in the ds version of colors, same with cameos of the entire sonic cast, and even the mother wisp. colors ds is better if you haven't played it yet.

Some notes: 1. It's been recommended that I try playing the DS version of Sonic Colors - it sounds like that version has a lot of unique stuff so I think I'm going to try it out! 2. I realize now that the endless level "glitch" I described at 2:45 is actually just weird level design, I didn't realize at first that you're supposed to step on a bunch of switches to spawn the goal ring. 3. Hey GameGuy, gotta say. This was the best run through I've ever heard for Sonic Colors Ultimate. Solid content and godly editing to top it off. Sonic Colors is my all time favorite Sonic game, and when the remaster was announced, I teared up completely. The original is superior, as many people agree. Nonetheless, you made my day with this video. Everything you said about the impact Sonic Colors had on the series slapped a universally huge smile on my face.

All of the "glitches" you mentioned were present in the original. You simply missed the ground switch for seven minutes straight in act 4 and found it on your second playthrough. Happened to me too when I first played that level. The pop in you mentioned in the asteroid level isn't actually pop in. That transition always required fast reflexes.

Yeah since I made the vid I’ve realized that they aren’t “glitches” per se, but that’s fine because they’re still kinda odd game design choices I guess. But really I’m just glad to hear I’m not the only one who experienced that with the ground switch!

Yeah, I was honestly surprised with myself because I was expecting to not like it! Also, I think most games have good and bad things about them - unless every aspect of a game is objectively the worst thing ever created, I see no reason to drag the entirety of it through the mud.

@@GameGuy53 People often forget the reason why the story in Colors was toned down compared to how they were delivered throughout the 2000's. The mid/late 2000's era of Sonic was so hell bent on recapturing that "Sonic SatAM" energy and just doing a miserable job at it. Whereas Colors felt more like an episode of "Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog", except you don't need to be high to enjoy it. XD

Whereas the "Dark Age" stories gave the impression that they were embarrassed of the source material they came from.

I played the Switch version recently to prep for Sonic Frontiers. I had more fun than I thought I would. Especially with the Rival Rush races against Metal Sonic (the only time I ever cared to collect red rings in these games.) But if you want that final boss fight (and cameos from other Sonic characters), than you gotta play the Nintendo DS version.

For the refreshinator and the other boss, they are actually just that short. Other characters also appear in the DS version, but I’m not sure about the specific ones. Also, the ghost wisp wasn’t in the original game, which is likely why you felt it was under utilized and slightly less polished

@@GameGuy53 yeah, it was definitely just squeezed in as a way to distinguish the remake a bit from the original. just about all of the ghost wisp areas were originally just out of bounds, and often times it really shows, what with awkward cameras and level design as well as occasional buggy behavior.

I played Sonic Colors Ultimate when it launched on PS4 and the only bug or glitch I ever experienced was wisp music would randomly stop playing sometimes. But I only experienced this when I went back for red rings. Have a 100% save with all red rings, all chaos emeralds, and all rival races completed. Granted, the game got a patch before I went back for the extra stuff but i still went through most of the main story before a patch was released and no glitches. Anyone who called this game glitchy for the PS4 version at least is either lying, was searching for glitches, or somehow have way worse luck than me.

3:07 i know it’s been a year (or so) but, this actually wasn’t a glitch. In order to spawn the goal ring, you need to hit a switch on the far right side. You can see it pass around a few times in the footage

Oh yeah that planetary ring act of Asteroid Coaster is weird, fighting the enemies isn't what spawns the goal ring, it's actually one of those round blue ground switches. You can see the one you've gotta hit come into view in the lane all the way to the right in your footage right around 3:11. I was just as confused playing the Wii version when I cleared it the first time with no issue but then tried it again and couldn't get the goal ring to spawn. Also the lasers from those purple chaser robots can't reach you if you're boosting non-stop, that was in the original too. Just a way to reward optimal play if you've been careful with your boost and keep collecting white wisp capsules.

That is so bizarre - this is literally the first time I’m hearing of it. It’s not very clear on the first play through of the level exactly what you’re supposed to do. Interesting to hear that some of the weirdness I noticed truly wasn’t a result of glitches, but rather just odd game design choices. Further proves the point that the game is definitely playable after all the patches I guess!

Honestly playing the original Sonic Colors just highlights how much better it is compared to Ultimate, I feel like the only reason to ever want to play ultimate would be to play The console sonic colors on the go. Otherwise just stick with the Wii version

I agree! I truly did go back and play the Wii version after this video, that little quick joke at the end was semi-true lol. It feels a little smoother, and I like playing with the Wii remote and nunchuck a lot. Though I do think this version definitely does the job for folks who may not have a Wii to play on. (Or an emulator)

From what I can tell the switch version is very similar to the Wii version - it has one extra mode where you race metal sonic and an extra wisp but that’s about it. I don’t think you’d be missing much by sticking to the Wii version!

I have a Canon DSLR, a Shure podcast microphone, a Neewer lighting kit, and I do all of my editing in Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects! I grew up with sonic colours on the nintendo Damn was i hyped when i saw the wii Gameplay, especially that there were so many more wisps to fuse with But im really suprised that the DS version acutally does have a supersonic bossfight Its called the mother wisp if o remember right By suprised i wanted to say that im wondering why this fight only apperas in the DS version My conclusion would be as a equalizer for not being able to play supersonic on any other stage I guess But damn that final Bossfight is really cool im kinda sad it dosent appear on the wii version etc. The higher quality would make it even better Edit: I had a phase where i (while not knowing what speedrunning is). Speedrunned the game lom I used my alarm clock measure the time. Now looking back i wonder how far i could have improved my times if only i didnt get caught playing in the night xD Man now im hyped for this game again

As someone who adored the original and am now playing the remaster after the bug fixes I gotta say...I'm enjoying it. I don't know anything about graphics or lighting or anything and I wasn't playing when the bugs were happening but I know that the remaster feels like a polished (if only slightly more) version of the original

I didn’t complete the original version, but I did play through a handful of levels to compare and I definitely agree with you! Everyone keeps pointing out that the DS version had some exclusive features like an extra boss where you play as Super Sonic. It would’ve been cool if this new version could have brought in some of those DS features as well, but it does its job as a faithful remaster.

Its not really fair including the epilepsy warning glitches. I did a bit of digging and found out that it turns out that glitch when it was first found was only happening when you emulated the game. There was a similar looking glitch but you really had to go out of your way to trigger it, making it unlikely to happen to anyone by accident. It has been fixed too.

I’m not entirely sure if the PS5 controls any better - but I can say that having played most of the other sonic games, I do find that this one controls a tad weirder than a lot of the others. It might just be a Sonic Colors thing and not a Switch thing.

Most of the thigs you see as a glitches or graphic problems are your lack of skill. at 4:22 it meant to be like that to check your reflex 3:48 yes, you can beat this boss that fast and you can beat the other within the two minutes 2:54 you probably didn't destroy them all and they load your boost level

Those are all some great pickups! I would definitely say Sonic Frontiers is better than this game, I’m really enjoying it so far. I haven’t played the panzer dragoon remake but I’ve seen footage. The reviews seem mixed across the board but to me it looks like an essential for sega collectors.

i bought the steam version for my steam deck and it’s dumb how much it lags at points still, for reference the steam deck can run red dead 2, sekiro, cyberpunk and even the newer sonic generations at little to no lag depending on ur graphics settings, it’s honestly sad how bad this port is, should’ve NEVER been this hard

I played on switch version verison 1.0 no updates with not a single glitch happening across it all. Other than being bad framerate which is just... switch lol. I got it on ps4 recently and its flawless with 4k and 60fps visuals all over not a single framedrop anywhere. So the answer is, it's not that broken. It never was, was always valuable to end even on version 1.0 switch.

I love how the entire 5 minute section of this video about “glitches” is actually entirely just janky and poor design decisions of Sonic Colors Wii compared to most other Sonic games, including its own DS counterpart. Really wish they had included the DS games’ levels/missions and bosses, Sonic Colors is incomplete without it. Colors Wii is pure flash and spectacle, Colors DS is the real meat and substance of the game.

There’s also the fact that the Wii game itself was specifically designed around being played with the Wiimote + nunchuck. Everything from the way Sonic moves being made to account for the ridged control stick of the nunchuck, the delay on the wisp activation to account for activating it with a Wiimote waggle, and the minimization of the controls and actions Sonic can perform outside of scripted sequences. All of which is still present in the remaster, despite being played exclusively with a standard controller.

Since Colors Ultimate actually has customizable controls, here’s the best button layout to make them as close to the original as possible: Jump: B (bottom face button) I believe that’s the default, so just don’t change it. Boost: ZR (right trigger) boost was originally mapped to the Wiimote’s B button, which is the trigger. and it functions more like a “forward drift” than a boost and even doubles as the actual drift button for drifting segments. Stop/slide: ZL (left trigger) similar to boost, the original game had stomp on the Z button, which is the trigger on the Nunchuck, coupled with the boost, this makes the game’s controls feel more balanced. Wisp activation: there’s no way to map it to a waggle like the original, not even on Switch. By default it’s on the right bumper, which is fine, but I prefer it on the X button (top face button), as that’s what it is in Generations and the DS version of Colors. As far as I’m aware, there’s no way at all to solve the joystick issue. You just have to get used to the slight jank of playing it with a smooth joystick. There might be third party joycons with ridged joysticks, but I’m not sure. The GameCube controller is a no-go because of the analog triggers.

1:40 explains why switch went on sale lol. The worst one ill stick with ds version (r4 on 3ds still lives). Is funny how woke sega gets while hushing up on this and the sonic origins plus physical having codes for amy and game gear (and game gear swept under rug in menu, with no standalone dlc to be "inclusive").

I agree - it’s not like there aren’t plenty of other switch games that can run that either. I would take 60fps over graphical fidelity in a sonic game any day of the week, it would make the speed segments so much better.

Not that I’ve ever dove into the world of video game design myself, I am but a measly filmmaker, but even I can tell when people are just sounding off into the internet echo chamber without a clue of what they’re talking about. I will say there can definitely be a somewhat sluggish feel to the 2D sections on both versions - I thought Sonic was supposed to be fast but hey I've never met the guy.

@@GameGuy53 thats fair tbh. Its not the speed for me, as ive been playing the ds variant of this game and its only 2d and its great! Something about the way sonic controls in console colors just aint right for me i guess. Im glad that people like it tho, as the actual world the game takes place in is super interesting
