Apparently the author herself revealed in Good reads Q&A that Eve knew Jay was a student and that’s why she kept saying they can NEVER be together. About Jay being a married man, its was just an assumption at that point.

@@lyddie8 Agree & personally, I feel the author owes me a refund for TWO of her books. This one was “ok to kill time” and it is highly unlikely that I recommend it to anyone. “The Inmate” was the contributing factor to the record number of eye rolls that I made while reading it. I think I will just steer clear from her books in the future. 😂

Male here. I found this book in my sister's room and decided to read it while my power was out and I actually quite enjoyed it. I never read and the Teacher was a pleasant surprise. I found myself liking Eve great deal. My assessment is that Eve is supposed to be a terrible person with a lot of redeeming qualities. I found her fascination with shoes kind of cute, but at a certain point I tuned those parts out. Shoes are supposed to be a symbol of happiness in her loveless marriage and I think it makes sense. Also, Eve's eccentric internal monologue had me laughing out loud multiple times. "Boobalicious" and her comments about Lotus's cringy make-up are stand out moments. All things said, Eve is pretty unsympathetic especially given that she was willing to extort Nate in exchange for her silence so the fact that she was in an inappropriate relationship with Hudson didn't bother me at all. I actually think that twist serves the story pretty well considering it's another example of Hudson being willing to keep dark secrets. I've read The Teacher, Never Lie and The Inmate and of those three, this one's my favorite with Never Lie not too far behind.

Spoiler Observation: I found it a bit annoying that the storyline with the fired teacher, Art, was never resolved or explained. I find only 2 possible explanations as to why it was in the story 1) To made us suspicious of Addie i.e. Art's strong warning for Eve to stay away from Addie or 2) We haven't seen the last of Addie, prepare for a sequel!😂😂😂

😂😂😂 I thought this book was absolutely ridiculous when I read it, and hearing you lay it all out like that just confirms why this book only got a star from me as well. The old teacher alluding to Addie being dangerous and then never even coming back to that makes no sense. It seemed like Eve didn't even know Jay/Hudson was a student when they attend the same school. It was just not good.

the poetry thing reminded me so much of My Dark Vanessa lolll. not a shock since she takes inspiration ie allegedly rips off other stories, so i have only read The Housemaid from her and will keep it that way. it doesn’t seem like her recent books are (allegedly) plagiarized but i can’t support someone who has ripped off at least 7 books/movies. don’t care if other people read her, and it sounds mean to say, but i’m glad people are recognizing her books for the low quality trash they are (no offense if you like her work, i just think she’s not a great writer. also strange how she’s apparently a doctor yet churns out books like it’s nobody’s business??)

Example: The Last Mrs Parrish and The Housemaid/The Housemaid's secret (cant remember which one). I just don't find them original but they're a nice to get you out of a slump. No one who churns out books that fast can produce something of quality, sorry.

I had been on the waiting list for this book at the library and finally read it last week. I feel the same way about this book - the first half was just so cliché and the second half went overboard trying to be original and shocking. This was my first book from this author and I was wondering after finishing this book if I should give a second book a try before making up my mind about her work, but now I'm really hesitant to do so. What I find interesting is that I get the feeling that people equal "not being able to put a book down" to enjoying a book. Which I come to realize is not the same thing. A good book will keep you engaged the whole time. A bad book propels you forward by not giving anything of substance or revealing much about the story and you keep turning pages hoping to finally gain understanding on what the heck is going on. Two examples of such books I've read this year Expiration Dates (Rebecca Serie) and Bad Summer People (Emma Rosenblum). Read in a couple of days, and did not find any payoff in finding out how the story ends. SPOILERS: I feel the story could have been more interesting if the conflict had been set between Eve and Addie. The second it got moved to the relationship the student had with the male teacher, I thought it was just lazy storytelling. When the weird things started happening inside the house, I wondered if they were going to bring the wife back from the dead but thought this would not be very original - and yet... You had to suspend your disbelief quite a bit with that part - she survived being hit on the head, then choked, then managed to wriggle her way out of a sheet while buried underground. And it lucked out that she had been buried with her purse so she could call for help when she got out. And then that epilogue felt so pointless and unnecessary. I don't think we see it coming, but aside from revealing that Eve is just as bad as her husband, it does not add much to the story as a whole.

That's about the speed of most authors who are enduring in suspense/mystery.

NO, NO, AND NO!!!! It was like you read my mind! Plus I am a teacher and so is my husband. This brings the ick factor way up. Every male teacher I have ever known has been taught to NEVER be in a room with a girl alone, you are supposed to steer her to the door and finish your convo in the hall. I too had the same question about Art Tuttle and the shoes, wow they drove me crazy!!! The shoes that she was buying were not the kind that you would buy in the mall, or you would ever buy on a teacher's salary. Maybe my review is stupid as I know that the role of teachers needs to be researched better. I was left with a slew of questions. If you want to read a book about this very disturbing subject pick up My Dark Vanessa.

Which the baby she heard crying when they were on the phone once was actually Hudson’s baby brother-ok that works. I can’t with McFadden. I’ve read Never Lie, The Inmate and The Locked Door. They all felt like books you could write a one page summary on and be done (kind of like you did here). There was no beautiful writing to enjoy, quotes to highlight, no meaning, just a silly predictable mystery. I generally don’t like to be negative about authors, but because the plagiarism accusations are really hard to get past, the book similarities sound absurd, I just don’t feel bad. Maybe as a teen I would’ve loved these books, but that’s about that.

I hated it, really hated it almost gave up reading many many time and it only took me a day and a half to get through. I basically kept reading to see if I was correct abt (SPOILERS)the guy teacher 🙈I can’t remember his name all of a sudden -having had an inappropriate relationship with Eve when she was his student. So many things pointed to that and I was surprised it only got revealed at the very end. So many things pointed to the creep only being interested in young girls including their stunted intimacy issues. I can kind of understand Eve seeming young because having been groomed and then marrying her groomer could lead to that kind of mindset- I just could not stand that she went ahead and had a relationship with a student herself. I wanted to go back see if J was described as looking older then he is to justify it but I just couldn’t be asked. I did love that Eve used all of the Poe stuff to miss with his head and I appreciate that he thinks he’s some poetic genius but has only been able to write one really bad poem he keeps reusing over and over again. Yikes.

I agree with her.Every thriller has some triggers because it's that kind of literature.Don't read thrillers or horrors if you are so sensitive!

Since I read ”Ward D” I have been boycotting her books. The way she described people with mental health issues was disgusting. As someone who suffers from depression myself, I just don’t know if I can support McFadden after that😂 I have enjoyed her books prior, but something inside me just burst when I read ”Ward D”. Should I give her another chance?

I tried not to like it but I can’t 😂I listen this and never lie on audio with the same narrator and maybe thanks to her voice that gives more emotion and interesting energy to the book I did like it. Also you went into it already not liking the synopsis and the teacher student relationship so that can throw you off 😊. But I enjoyed your review!

I hated this one. I haven't really liked any of her books since the Housemaid. I really thought she was IT when I read the Locked Door, the Wife Upstairs and Do Not Disturb, but nothing has been as good since I read those!

you should review your ratings cuz 1 star??? if it was 1 star you wouldn't even have finished it. its fine if you didn't like it, but doesn't mean its a 1 star story.. please.

As a fanfiction/Wattpad addict for many years who was absolutely obsessed with the teacher/student thing I really liked that the whole dead body thing at the beginning was amazing. That said, it sounds really predictable straight up Wattpad vibes with much better language and of course, no typos.

I got so bored a few chapters in and stuck with that really long and full of detailed spoilers review that's on Goodreads. So glad I just read that instead because lord. It was like a 15 year old DID write it.

I read this book in one sitting. Not high brow literature but super fun. However ....what!!??? The ending made me rethink the 4 star rating. What nonsense was it with all the red herrings there Jay had a wife and kid all along. He kept saying love you and Eve kept reacting to it. If you wanted to make her a groomer all along, why give us her pov and make it seem like she saw Hudson as an adult at the store and then also saw him at school everyday? Makes no sense. All the details about Jay should have been hidden then. Kudos to this author for spoiling what could have been a great pop thriller with a nonsensical ending. That is a rare talent indeed.

I actually loved this book. The only book I didn’t really like was the second Housemaid book. I’ll be reading the third one, but I thought that one was awful. Overall, tho, I enjoyed The Teacher.

This must be the worst book she has ever written. None of the plots make any sense. This book felt like a high schooler, making her written debut. The last plot with Hudson/ Jay just makes absolutely no sense . Honestly, this book is laughable . I think she may have meant for Jay to be Hudson's father because there is no way ... 10/10 would not recommend it, and this is definitely my last read for her .The HouseMaid was the only good one.
